I only "know" like 1-2k words well. I "know" an additional 1-2k words but I forget them frequently even though I use anki. I often have moments where I've forgotten the reading and/or meaning even though the word looks familiar and I look it up and go "Oh yea of course that's what it is. I've seen this a billion times." I've started getting a lot of leeches in anki and I can tell that I'd remember these words better if I encountered them more often in text. The words I "know well" and "kinda know" are growing slowly, but this process would be more enjoyable if I got more input and they grew faster. In fact I make sure to mine words that are frequent so the fact I'm still forgetting them is more evidence I'm not getting enough input. I should probably be reading 3 hours a day minimum and watching anime for another couple hours but I haven't felt like doing it.

My grammar knowledge isn't great either. In the basic stuff I've read I can figure out the vast majority of sentences if I know all the words but I imagine if I read something like Muramasa I might get fucked. Oh and I've generally stuck to pretty samey VNs so that actually might explain why my vocab hasn't grown that much the past year. If I started reading different things other than super basic SoL w/ minor magical elements I'd know more. I have not been challenging myself like I should be. I guess the silver lining is that I have a good enough base that if I doubled my input I might see rapid gains, or at least I hope. But I have a low IQ so IDK what would happen.

I lowered my anki cards yesterday before going to bed. I feel much better and confident today, but I think I'm gonna stick with 15 for a bit anyway. I wanna build a strong foundation even if it's a little slower.
The one thing I've learnt in this week (which has also been my only week of studying in my life, I never studied in school) is not to study sleepy. In general if I do it in the morning I come out feeling a bit tired but optimistic and well. But if I do it sleepy I just don't get as much out of it and I feel like an absolute fuckup.

Alright fuck it. That was a colossal pain the patootie because I read every single sentence, multiple times even. But I like it. It helps me start seeing grammar and shit. So turning new anki cards even lower, to 10, but I am going to stop and read the example sentences and try to understand all of them. It took me 40 mins to do 170 cards that way, but i feel I got so much more out of it. I'm actually reading like you lot tell me too and some sentences even made complete sense already. Getting used to the isolating nature of the language and stuff.

Good shit anons, good shit, anki is reading if you do it this way (obviously after a while reading 10 new sentences a day is bab shit, but it's good when you're a week in).

Hello. First post on this sub. はじめまして、宜しくお願いします。

I’ll start with my confession. I have been speaking/using/studying Japanese for 30+ years and I feel I am forever stuck in the middle somewhere in terms of overall fluency and knowledge of the language.

I’m American. I majored in Japanese in university in the late 80’s. No, I was not the best student, but I got my degree. After uni, I went to Japan. Lived and worked there almost 20 years. My wife is Japanese. My job involves Japanese. Sounds like I should be an expert? Far from it.

To someone who doesn’t speak Japanese, or at a beginner level, I may sound fluent. But to anyone who does speak Japanese past the upper-intermediate level, I think it's obvious to them I lack vocabulary and have some (many) fossilized bad habits.

I don't really have a good idea where my level is at. Fresh out of school, I think I might have been able to pass the JLPT N2. Now I think I’d be lucky to pass N3 with a lot of work. I’ve actually never taken the test - I think I should have, way back then. I don’t have (much) trouble having conversations in Japanese, and my listening is good - I’m not a beginner - but I always feel the limits of my vocabulary holding me back. I often find myself explaining things in clunky, roundabout ways if I don’t know how to say something.

I think my Japanese ability increased a lot the first few years I was in Japan, then it plateaued and stayed there for decades.

Anyone else in a similar situation? That is, not a student anymore (and haven’t been for a long time), been using Japanese for years but never pushed over into advanced levels. How do you move ahead again?
