Japanese is full of homophone words, and the only way to differentiate them besides context is the kanji used to write them.
So it helps to avoid confusion, especially if you're just tuning in.

At least in GNT's case they're often used for comedic effect

Why does American TV have subtitles?

>> No.21856064

Same case is with the videos on NicoNico or Youtube OP. It's just that people may watch their shows in public and don't have headphones, and so they don't want to make people around them disturbed

This isn't true. The amount of homophones is extremely large but it certainly isn't enough to require subtitles. The actual reason is that they were added for housewives to follow shows without paying full attention. It just stuck and that's the style now.

It's called the テロップ and in variety shows it's awarded only to the funniest lines.
To have achieved the sacred「テロップ」is considered a great honour in Japanese culture.

American TV programs have tons of text on screen too (look at NBC or The Weather Channel at any time of the day). You probably just notice them a lot more in Japanese TV because you aren't as used to mentally blocking out Japanese text, or because you mostly watch Japanese TV proframs.
