Youre possitively retarded if you think he only wrote 50k character for each episode, or even only 100k if its just for the question arc. That would make it only 2-4 hours long.

Also take in mind that its 400k japanese characters where the general rule of thumb is one english word converts to 3 jp characters. So think of it as around 130k words.

Umineko had ~1.3m words, divide that by 8 and the average episode of umineko was 162k words. This puts the 400k jp characters at about the same length episode 1 of umineko would be.

Shannon was Yasu's image of a perfect maid, originally. The little voice telling her what to do. As she grew up she started to emulate that persona, because she wanted to become that perfect maid. In fantasy we see it as transparent ghosts and people changing form. It's window dressing over a very simple coping mechanism for growing up.

Kanon didn't even exist before Yasu's friendship with Jessica and Jessica loudly lamenting a lack of boyfriend. Yasu, fucked up as she were, gave her only friend exactly that: a boyfriend. It could be reasonably argued that Yasu had feelings for Jessica, too, at that time.

The original Beatrice represents the fear of the dark and all the little magical delusions Yasu had for coping mechanisms when growing up. Again, we see her as a ghost in fantasy - but in reality, it's just the little voice telling Yasu that the house is haunted, magic exists and is both terrifying and wonderful, and she would oh-so-much like to become a witch. A child's escapism.

All of that (escapism, idealized self) is perfectly normal for troubled children. The issue there is the slippery slope when given the gold and the family headship. Suddenly, she could act like a witch and get away with it. Suddenly, she could disguise as Kanon with the help of the servants and not be discovered. What were simple fantasies became accessible.

I read the entirety of Umineko as it came out and I feel like I'm being generous when I give it a 4/10. It's a convoluted mess that reads like it was written by a 12 year old. The Japanese fanbase refuses to so much as give Ryuukishi the time of the day nowadays for good reason.

Like I said, almost no Japanese fan cares about Ryuukishi nowadays, and it's more than people just being pissed off about episode 8 of Umineko (people were pissed off about Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi long before then, anyway). It's because they've had enough exposure to him to see through his tricks and stop falling for his brand of spectacle and sophistry. And yes, his terrible, childish text is part of the problem too - there are parts of Higurashi that have such embarrassingly poor writing that they're used as copypasta on 2ch.

Yes. Of course some Japanese fans hated it, but there are plenty who liked it too. It wouldn't have gotten all the rereleases via manga, ps3, and pachinko if nobody was supporting the series. It's just like here in the west where a few verbal detractors can fool people into thinking a series is disliked as a whole. As for Ryukishi's writing, I find it to be very well composed, and way better than the stuff other authors like Nasu put out.

I just read the first episode of Higanbana and I felt the ending was a bit forced and cliche. The "ohoo bad" molester got punished at the end and that girl got to have her soul redeemed I guess. Why tho, horrible people get away with bad shit all the time. Without any supernatural intervention the teacher would have escaped just fine. And what he told her at the end wasn't even wrong. She was indeed helplessly stupid (albeit just a kid) for not realizing she was in a position of strength. He got fucked then anyway because muh mesomeso rules...

Am I just a brainlet and the writing flew over my head or something? Do I need to be more of a fantasyfag to enjoy this? Does it get any better?

Higanbana is shit and tries too hard to deliver some messages while also at the same time using supernatural elements that contradict the core idea of the message
The only good chapter of higanbana is the second one of the second VN

Also, in umineko, even though he can conjure redeeming stories for the characters using the catbox, there is still a way to interpret the "real story" and derive meanings from those interpretations. This is straight up cheat mode as you said. At the same time maybe I shouldn't judge this work like I do umineko or any other and view it simply as it's own thing. The fact that there's a character named Mariye that goes uuUUuuU (in my translation at least) doesn't help though.

But some writers just like interesting stuff and don't inherently have an axe to grind about modern issues, rather, modern issues are present in their works because modern issues are present everywhere

You know, I thought at first that Ryu came up with Yasu as a solution for the mystery and shoehorned in the HEART shit to save face, but Yasu is a very accurate portrayal of such a type of character. I see myself in that propensity of Yasu to use fantasy as a refuge and sort of draw power from myth and the unknown (Beatrice). In fact, the only problem Yasu has is not related to the character themselves but how they are reconciled with the plot and mystery. For example, explaining how they could be Shannon and Kanon without people figuring it out (in my mind a significant portion of the characters were in on it).
But the character of Yasu is so real that I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was modeled on R07 himself to some degree.

How do you feel about the writing? I LOVED umineko back when it was fresh, then reread it last year and discovered that 1) it's a lot less fun when you know the answer 2) r07 repeats himself way too much and could generally use a good editor. Did he improve in RGD? Didn't read that yet.
