what is emotional about the statement "you have never experienced pure human nature without the influences of conditioning"? that's just an objective statement. if you have experienced a state of existing without any conditioning whatsoever then i'd genuinely love to hear about it. although it may be difficult to explain with language which is also a form of conditioning.
>a society is made up of humans and as such any influences that comes from it is inherently human
so then your original assertion that detachment from the inferiority/superiority game is "anti-human nature" was a mistake then? since it's in direct contradiction with this new assertion you're making.

i’m quite sure it doesn’t require becoming a monk. it’s just a change in mindset, and anyone is capable of that.
if everyone did it, then perhaps whatever parts of the culture that revolve entirely around judging people in terms of superiority and inferiority probably wouldn’t survive. but the other stuff (the actually good stuff in my opinion) like art, food, and architecture, would probably be fine.

you fail to understand that having to be picky in what you choose to look up, as well as the act of looking it up, contributes heavily to your progress in learning japanese. being able to look up everything makes it impossible to memorise everything. which means you ultimately either a) continue in a state of not memorising anything but the most very basic vocab or b) end up relying on shit like anki because it's the only way you can both memorise and keep your "look up every single word because i need computer assisted reading" crutch

i said that it's possible to learn the most basic common words in this way, simply due to sheer frequency. but if you are looking at every single word you don't know in the dictionary then your brain is not going to be able to retain any of that information except the ones occurring extremely frequently. this isn't some "iq" related shit, it's just a simple fact that if you look at 1000 new words once each while reading your brain will have no chance of remembering any of those because it's information overload.

how many words do you think you know roughly?

my point was exactly that you shouldn't hope to remember everything, but by looking everything up you cloud your brain with too much information and make it more difficult to remember the stuff that you probably should be remembering (ie the most common words). that's why it's a lot easier to do that if it's your focused goal in looking shit up purposefully, whereas it's just an unintentional potential byproduct of reading with a texthooker and looking everything up, and it isn't guaranteed to happen since your mind will be full of garbage as a result of looking everything up.

maybe I'm just trying to make the first consonant sound more prominent than it needs to be?

When I first started using a J-J dictionary I didn't really understand what さま meant and why some definitions would have that at the end, or some would have こと, or same would have like また、その人. It just felt like extraneous dictionary language that only confused me. But lately it's started to click with me a lot more and seems so obvious now and silly in retrospect that it troubled me before.

Now I just need that same thing to happen with things like 物事 and 事柄 and ある and その and whatever other qualifiers that come at the beginning of definitions that I can't think of right now, since most of that all blends together to me and also feels like extraneous dictionary language that I have a hard time understanding and differentiating between.

i said i prefer using subtitles when i want to understand everything with the least amount of time and effort. and i also said in those posts that i still watch some things raw.
by the way, fluency doesn't mean "knowing all the words", like i said above. i talk to japanese people every day and it's pretty dang effortless at this point.

i did post a clip, of me speaking to a japanese person at work. in the clip i'm obviously at a japanese school (there are school bells ringing), and as far as i know, they do not allow transsexual people to work in public schools here. but of course they ignored the clip completely because it would ruin their fantasy of me being a transsexual.

oh i didn't know i had to know words like "flaming sword of eternal chaos" to have an interesting conversation. i'll make sure to build up all my anime vocab so i can talk to my coworkers and friends about what REALLY matters. thanks for the tip weeb. lmao.

if you listened to my clip (or have seen the chat conversations i've posted) you'd know that they talk to me at normal speed and with normal language because they know i can understand it. not knowing every single word and expression in an anime =/= "only knowing survival japanese". are you guys really this bad at processing nuance in your brains?

in those threads i said even if i don't know just 5 words in an anime of over 2000 words, engsubs makes it so i never have to PAUSE to see what the missing word was. i can finish an episode in 20 minutes having understood every single thing that happened. that was the whole point of me making those posts. not that i could never enjoy a raw or j-subbed anime ever. prior to even making those posts i had been exclusively watching raws and j-subbed anime for close to a year, and still do half the time. i already know my unknown words rarely exceeded 5 to 20 per episode. it's just that pausing to look up those 10 or so words each episode took more effort than i felt like spending anymore for that particular medium, if i wanted to understand literally every single word of every episode without looking stuff up.

plus i still listen to podcasts, youtube videos, drama CD's etc, no english. but i start using eng subs again, sometimes, on one piece of media, and your panties get all bunched up lol. sheesh. 余計な心配じゃない?

stop selectively reading, "they don't understand every word" was the key point. i didn't say they couldn't follow the plot or that they had no idea what was happening.

so will you guys tell me about all the japanese kids who you've talked to about vocab? because i literally have done so 30 times or so now and more than half the time, whatever word i was asking about they did not know. this leads me to believe that they frequently skip words they don't know and make things up.

that might be the case sometimes, but not when they say
「見たことない」
「初めて見た」
「ええ何それ」
even after i let them read the page. that kind of reaction tells me that they in fact do not know the word.

>Getting the circumstantial jist of an expression even vaguely is still better than having a memorizes anki definition in your head.
i rarely use anki anymore but i'm sure having an applicable j-j definition in your head to refer to is better than a vague gist. i am starting to think though that too much purposeful memorization might hinder the language acquisition process.

You just confirmed you are not even close to being a real teacher.

If you were actually running the classes as you claim, you would not have anywhere near this much free time due to having to plan lessons, come up with homework, mark homework, etc., etc., etc....

As was said before, you clearly have zero teaching responsibilities. Anything you say to the contrary is a shameless lie made to fabricate a more favorable image of yourself than what actually exists in reality.

There is no way for me to check if I got other words then the "target" word right. The sentence is just to contextualize the word or expression that the card is focused on, and I fail or pass the card solely based on that. If I can't read the words in the sentence, then I just can't read the sentence, and it's not of any help. But more often than not it's at least somewhat helpful, even if I don't remember all the words.

My reasoning for this is that, there is no point in failing a card for other words in a sentence, since those words would have their own cards anyways, and I can just fail those.

Try turning your PC off and back on again at the socket.

My PC is semi-fucked. I'm guessing it's a PSU issue. If I leave the power on at the mains constantly, there's no problem, but if I turn the mains power off and then turn it back on again, there's a fair chance that the power supply won't work properly for whatever reason and the computer will refuse to boot, no matter how many times I try turning the computer itself off and back on again. I have to switch it off at the mains, then switch it back on at the mains, and usually that will get the power working properly again, but sometimes it takes a few tries.

No idea what the problem is but it started pretty early in the year IIRC and by some miracle my PC is still working without issue (provided the power at the mains remains uninterrupted). Some components in this computer are going on for 10 years old now. I don't know how it's lasted so long, especially with how much use it gets. Even the "newer" components are probably 7 years old or so.

Unfortunately the reader on this site is pretty shit since the only option for displaying the images is scaling them to the height of your browser.

I found a way to make them display at a better resolution though. If you use Firefox's Inspect Element tool, look for the "<section class="viewer js-viewer" blah blah blah" bit, then change the min-height value under .viewer from 500 to 1500 and uncheck max-height, the images will then display at their full resolution.

If you set the value much higher than 1500 though, the page starts going all out of whack (at least on a screen the size of mine), so it's best to stick with that.

Then I'll look up the lyrics or subtitles and it was 本と and I thought it was 本当. I still miss hear a lot.. prolly takes years to get good at hearing.

I have work. I enjoy proffesional relationships. Casual relationships are pointless, and a waste of time.
