cuz most of them i don't see everyday lol. 40k is really not that much. and even if they did it would not be easy to remember them just seeing them once a day. but realistically a lot of these words only come up once every few days or even more than that because they're very uncommon. in that case it's basically impossible to memorise them when you're seeing 100 or so of these uncommon words a day just once by themselves. it's 100* easier to focus on learning them individually in anki so I can grasp them better when reading and not have to look it up

That's why I said i+1 sentences, in other words sentences that contain only one word or bit of information that was previously not clear to you.

For instance, say I didn't know what 決裂 meant, and I come across the phrase 交渉は決裂という事ですか？ in one of my comic books, it would make a good i+1 sentence because the rest of the sentence is easy. Every time this sentence came up in my reps, I could recall the scene it happened in and the circumstances which led the character to say 決裂 to the point where if I see that word anywhere else I don't even have to think about what it means

I suggest you to get a feel for hiragana and katakana by writing words down in 'em.
Start off with words you know and are sure about, like エネルギー, とまる, or ころす. Then move onto writing city names (ジャカルタ, カリニングラド). Keep on at it till you've got at least on word per kana, and have no trouble reading them out loud.

sounds like you are trying to make your hands remember the kana and not your head, you will run out of ink before you've learnt the kana that way

try to write it once on a piece of paper, form the kana in your head, watch youtube or something else distracting for a few minutes then try to form it in your head again, then write it down, if you didn't get it right, rinse repeat

i do this with kanjis and i can usually memorize and recall the kanjis pretty fast

Write a column (from memory) a time. For example, write all 5 K sounds. If you can't remember one of them, no problem, just write the ones you can. If you did get all 5, good, move on to another column. If you didn't, go look at the one you couldn't and write it down to finish the column. Then immediately cover said failed attempt and repeat until you get all 5 of them. Don't do all of them in one day, aim at a week instead. Take it easy is the motto of this place for a reason.
Of course that's pretty slow and you're never going to get anywhere like that, but that's where grammar comes in. Do lots of small things and turn it into a big one.
Also, as the other anon said, actually read the character out loud as you're writing it down. There's no point in just copying and pasting with your hand without actually reading/thinking about it.
Finally, don't worry too much about not being able to instantly recognize them, it's fine if it takes 5 seconds (kanji is a different story though), since you'll be reading kana most of the time anyway. The only thing you should worry about is accuracy.

So for a short fiction thing I was writing I had an idea for a machine/scientific device developed in Japan. Due to its role, I thought it should have a sort of "inspiring" name, like the kind you see on spacecraft and telescopes and the like. The best name I could come up with was "Suncatcher".
But the only kanji combinations I can think of that could translate to "sun catcher" have really unsuitable meanings. 日捕 apparently means "per capita" in Japanese, which could maybe work for some sort of census data gathering computer, but that's not what this is. 捕陽 is Pyongyang written in kanji.
My first idea for a name was actually "Himatsuri", but then last year the show Hinamatsuri came out, and also that Fyre Festival thing happened so that's also a wash.

Different people have different ideas on what it means to "make it". For Jamal, his sole objective was being able to read eroge, and he pretty much accomplished that, as far as I know. For Matt, it was being able to read or listen to fuckloads of different stuff, and I'm sure he's got a lot less problem than me getting through books or films. Some people might genuinely aspire for native-level fluency, but I doubt that all of those people would actually be willing to put all of the effort required to fulfill this task. Even if they did, they'd probably still have trouble trying to overcome lots of minor linguistic and cultural barriers.

Sometimes but mostly no. A number of words do have rather contrived etymologies to them and some are actually nonsensical, but I would say that overwhelmingly the combinations make more or less straightforward sense and have predictable readings.

Try to understand how the words in front of you are made, that's about all I can recommend. The acquisition will be easier the more patterns you can draw and consequently apply. Also note how the Japanese think they can learn English by memorizing word lists and you can observe them fail 24/7.

I could read Dickens and Fielding with quite a bit of ease in English back when I was 11 years old. I think the only reason why I don't find stuff written in Japanese to be quite easy is only because I've not gotten enough practice at reading stuff in Japanese in general. Conceptually, what I'm reading is not difficult, so I think if I exposed myself more to Japanese writing in general, I'd be able to process text more quickly. Worst learner would be, I'm doing RTK at 2 kanji a day lmao and I get 25% every day on Anki, Japanese is hard lol
