>no one ever goes into detail what it is about anki that they hate so much
i have many times, but new fags keep appearing that have not heard me.

it is useless, as it is inferior to just reading. reading is the natural way of acquiring words and allows you to use the words naturally, and gives you new contexts to remember words. you can not memorize words only get more used to them. for beginning words you will see them enough to easily remember them, and uncommon words will become really easy to transfer to words you can understand but not produce with like one or two viewings by the time you have acquired the easy ones. anki fills no useful niche besides just being a boring waste of time. also a part of the input theory is input must be both comprehensible and compelling, without compelling you are much worse at acquiring. so you might brute force memorize with anki but you would the same result faster by reading compelling content.

Sorry, an extremely stupid question and I will probably make an idiot out of myself.

I've just picked a core Anki deck. I've never used it before. Can someone tell me how am I supposed to study using it? I obviously have to learn the Kanji visible on top, then there's the Kana version of it, and then its usage in an example sentence.

Am I supposed to learn the example sentence too? Memorize it? Or just the Kanji/meaning/Kana? I am an extremely slow learner, but I try to do something every day, I am just not sure if by "learn at least 20 a day" people mean just meanings, or the entire example sentences. Pic related - am I supposed, from this one card, to know "two", or the entire "I met that person twice". The latter is just so much more work I am not sure I can manage 20 a day.

tldr please help I have no idea how to use Anki

>> No.21577922

>>21577893
if it's your first time seeing a card, look at all of the information on it. repeat the reading to yourself while looking at the kanji of the word. then read the example sentence, preferably outloud (you don't have to memorize it. it's only there to give an example of how to use the word, and help you understand what it means).
once you have a good idea what the word means. press good. it should come up one more time later.
if you remember the meaning and reading correctly that second time, press good again, and you shouldn't see it again till the next day.
repeat for the rest of the cards you have due for the day.
what is your daily new card limit set to?

how horny you are, how long its been since her last shower, and your IQ

anyway a high IQ score determines what notes of flavor you're able to detect

>>21580146
>>21580163
I won't call him jamal fan but makopi because he didn't call himself that to demonstrate inferiority to jamal or anything like that, but just as a joke. And jamal is infinitely inferior to this guy, he should really be honored makopi did that. Now does he know more Japanese than me? Yes surely. He can definitely read more Kanji than me. But look at the quizzes that we did. They were all quizzes that included Kanji within the 3000+ range. Makopi reads dictionaries, kanbun, wikipedia and other weird things that I'm not really interested in so he has an advantage to me here, as I mostly consume Anime and rare literary words are simply rarer on those. If we do quizzes with more frequent Kanji (everything up to kanken level 2) it's practically tied out because we'll answer almost every question correctly. You also need to draw the line at a point where it makes sense. Makopi can read more Kanji than a native Japanese speaker. Now I don't plan on stopping at Japanese native level either but being able to read a bunch of obscure Kanji that some native speakers have never seen before stops being informative about practical ability at some point. I'd say we have both made it as we can both practically read at least 3000 Kanji, makopi probably reaches a total of over 4000 or even more. He did great at the level 1 kanken quiz too. He'd beat matt too.
It's harder to say how close we are in practical Japanese ability. He is definitely ahead, but I'd say it's closer than the distance between us in terms of Kanji readings. We did a quiz in which you had the Japanese definition and needed to guess the word and we scored about the same on that one. Of course that one result isn't too meaningful.
Now most importantly, as we can see makopi is a successful learner, should everyone adopt his method of doing things? I don't think so because you won't achieve the same results. He has a special memory and just seems to remember without any effort. Think about it, surpassing a native speaker's Kanji reading ability in 3 years without Anki, without writing out the characters or doing anything like the kind of Kanji study that gets recommended everywhere? It's an incredible feet that YOU simply won't replicate. We also played this short term memory game that tested how many units you could keep in your short term memory or whatever. Now I got like 40 points on that test which is above average. Want to know how many makopi got? A score of about 300. I usually don't like attributing anything to super human memory or natural ability but I think this is the case here.
Now that's not to downplay how good makopi is and effort he put in. He is really amazing. But I don't think his learning path is relevant to the average learner with average intelligence.

1. i think there are common, uncommon and rare words think like magic the gathering cards. rare words would be ones that a native speaker doesnt really know what it means even in context without looking it up in the dictionary. you probably have encountered these irl in your own language and you know they arent necessary to know.
2. i think learning naturally will actually be more efficient because you are actually being exposed to more new language just as a fact right like instead of doing anki looking at stuff you already know, you are reading/listening to new stuff and learning new things constantly. you will run into all the words you need to know and learn them faster if you just read.

namecalling? no, that wouldn't fuck up their psyche. they'd end up fine. people come up with elaborate theories as to how they've developed into the people they are, e.g. their 6 year old best friend in kindergarten pushed them off the swing set during recess which gave them a fear of swing sets so they avoided going to the park after school and went to the library and became physics geniuses but it's all a bunch of bullshit. it's mostly genes and random developmental noise.

that’s literally it dude. SOMEWHERE in your life you were taught that punishing yourself with your thoughts would somehow be helpful, and now it’s become as habitual as brushing your teeth in the morning
purposely introducing specifically loving thoughts into your mind on a daily basis is the only way to change that habit. the mind doesn’t work based on logic alone it works based on its habitual thought patterns which are PRACTICED whether you’re aware of it or not.

and the other people saying that achieving more external goals will make it go away are completely wrong. it’s 100% a matter of lack of compassion and kindness in your mental space.

the first step is getting quiet and still enough that you can at least notice your raw emotional state in the moment — not your thoughts slapped on top of it. but the literal, visceral sensations in your physical body.
once those are clear to you and are taking up the majority of your awareness, introduce a phrase that’s simple and has the intention of wishing you well.
“may i experience peace.” or
“may i be free from suffering.” or
“may i feel kindness in my heart.” or
“may i be forgiven for past mistakes.”
you can make up your own later too.

YES you will cringe at first. that means it’s working. the cringe comes from your old subconscious negative and judgmental thoughts that have been lying under the surface for years, fighting with this new information. just label them “old thoughts” and then keep going with the phrases, saying it like you mean it.

for some people it’s especially helpful if they start with imagining themselves saying the phrases toward someone they love, or a pet or something, and THEN themselves after they’ve gotten some compassionate feelings started that way.

if you get the hang of it and do it like 10 minutes a day your heart will open up towards yourself and others, a lot. you might even cry happy tears, which is a good thing. some assholes in here who’s hearts are hardened and dead will say this is gay and stupid. but it works. don’t listen to them.

they’re not platitudes and you haven’t even tried it bro. you have no idea whether it will work or not unless you actually do it. your negative thoughts are just sabotaging you again and convincing you to never do things that might actually threaten their beliefs.
you don’t have to be convinced of that right now, but that’s exactly what it looks like to me. straight up cognitive dissonance.
if you actually started doing it and not just assuming what it would be like, then over time you will get past the resistance and actually be able to receive the words and the sincere feelings behind them. there are many people who practice it and experience profound changes. i’ll post an example.

to me the time isn’t wasted at all even if you don’t do it. i know there are many more people who lurk these forums than people who actually post. so if anyone sees what i’ve posted and looks into it, it would’ve been worth it. there are way too many people walking around with shame and self hatred to NOT try and help if i know something that’s likely to work.

it’s not your soul that’s saying it’s nonsense. it’s your mind and the conditioned thoughts that lie within it. that’s why i said cognitive dissonance. old thoughts vs new ones, which will win?

if you’re able to direct kindness towards others, then doing it towards yourself is literally just a matter of gradually shifting the object of that kindness towards yourself too. resistance is a normal part of the process. you must confront that cognitive dissonance in order to get through it. your mind will eventually bend to what you persistently direct it towards.

but like i said it’s up to you. the alternative is just to continue habitually being made to feel like crap about yourself at the hands of thoughts and beliefs you refuse to challenge.

for people who want to try the “looking things up while reading more” thing instead of anki, but find it hard to detach from the stats aspect of anki, here’s what i’m doing.
i use both monolingual and J-E dictionaries on my phone, which save my search history. so at the end of each reading session (or just the end of the day), i total all lookups and note them in a daily counter/graph app.
with it i can see how many lookups i’m doing each day (and total for the week), so i can aim for a certain amount. number of lookups roughly correlates to amount of reading (of course varies based on difficulty of the text as well). so if i do 50 lookups i’ve probably read 4000 characters or so since i tend to average one lookup per 80 characters. less lookups means i’ve probably read less.

it’s been interesting to see the stats. although it’s not as 詳しい as anki’s stats, it at least gives me some way to track “progress” and it certainly takes a lot less time and energy than anki (like 3 minutes and some basic calculations). just from setting my daily lookup goal to 100, i’ve been reading about three times as much as i usually do (still haven’t actually hit 100 in a day yet though).
i’ll continue this for a few weeks and see if i’m learning a satisfying amount of new words as i keep up my daily goal (100 lookups per day for me roughly equates to 8,000 characters read).

doing anki reviews, adding things to it, etc. takes time, usually more than people admit to taking. and not sure how true this is (which is part of why i'm experimenting) but just the preconception that anki is the "only real way" or the "most effective way" to learn words could be limiting one's ability to learn naturally. like matt discussed in his "i dropped anki" or w/e video, you develop a cognitive bias towards not trying to understanding words as well as you can in the moment you encounter them in context, because you're convinced that until you review them with anki they won't stick anyway, so you might as well kind of gloss over it and wait till you eventually get around to anki-ing it. obviously this phenomena would not be conscious but unconscious and automatic due to years of depending on anki for one's vocab memorization.

i won't know for sure if it's true until i try though. cutting off anki use for a while is the only way to remove that bias, if it exists, and instead single-mindedly focus on reading (without any intentions to SRS anything) to see how effective it is on it's own.

your particular mistakes show that you have comprehension problems though, they're not the kind of thing that happens when you're trying to render something in a different language, they came from failing to grasp exactly what the text was trying to get across to you
in fact, writing something like "snared into a trick" only happens when you're trying to represent the original japanese too closely

it literally only takes 10 minutes max if you're adding like 15 words a day. also plenty of people have learned with and without anki so you don't "need to see" anything. it's obvious either way works. not sure how this response is relevant to what i said though, which is that if you're using anki you're still looking stuff up.

oh and this is if you set like a 5 second timer to flip your card, which is what i do. and my reps usually take like 7 minutes to do, not 10. 10 is max, in case you're having a particularly bad day and you keep failing a bunch or something. plus there's the 1 second it takes to add new cards with yomichan or a comparable tool.

even though i already admitted to being intermediate level like 20 times during that conversation so obviously i wouldn’t know it all perfectly to begin with and you should have expected a few mistakes

get a damn hobby lol and get over your disturbing superiority complex. how desperate you are to feel like you’re better than someone is cringy as hell

>> No.21583666

in hindsight even doing that “challenge” was a huge mistake cause not only does it not test comprehension, but simply doing it convinced you i was somehow in competition with you, when the point was only to prove that i was at least intermediate level, not to prove that i knew “more than” you or anyone here.

but of course you autists have to make a competition over everything otherwise the boredom of your lives is unbearable right. lol i fuckin can’t.

>if you enjoy forgetting, do what you do. some people want to remember the things they encounter. since that's kind of a required part of language acquisition

>and stop acting braindead like people can only do one or the other. the person who just gets 10 new words every day and knows they will stick because he's reviewing them, is always going to be better off than the guy who's too lazy to review. the only exception i can think of is if the person already has a vocab of over 20,000 or so. and you know you are not that person.

>i'm.. already good at japanese though? at least good enough to comfortably live my life in it, have stimulating conversations with it, maintain relationships with it, navigate the real world with it. and i didn't spend 5 hours a day nonstop visual novels to get here. nor will i start any time soon. almost all new vocab i learn now goes towards my enjoyment of media. that's it. and unlike some of you, as much as i enjoy it, that does not comprise my whole life.

you haven't posted anything proving your ability so in my eyes you're a piece of shit dekinai wanting to feel cool by criticizing someone who probably knows more japanese than you do. fuck off.

he's saying that understanding things on a deep level is a separate skill from just being good at the language, because he was already good at english at the time when he started understanding things on a deep level
>those translation errors make clear your problems with comprehension
this is about how you're rejecting the advice you got after you lashed out at the translation challenge, it doesn't have to do with whatever your specific skill level is
let me copy paste it so you can't try to weasel your way out of it
>Aim for deep, high-level comprehension, spanning entire paragraphs or scenes. What's going on? Why are things happening the way they are? Why does this grammar pattern feel so different from this other grammar pattern? How would I have written this instead, and what does that say about the text or my ability in the language? Your brain should be asking itself all sorts of question in the background, subconsciously, as you read or listen to Japanese, just like it does when you do so in a language you're good at. Your points about instantly forgetting things you just looked up indicate that you haven't managed to make this happen yet. This is vital to language learning. Oh, and this doesn't affect reading speed.

it helps with focus which is useful when you are doing things you dont want to do. if you are reading or watching something so interesting you shouldnt have any problems with focus.
basic meditation involves paying attention to something and redirecting your attention back to that thing when you realize you stopped paying attention to it. e.g. pay attention to your breath sensation
