Aya superior, Momiji inferior, but that's not to say that the white wolf is shit. She's not, not by any extent, she's actually pretty great and a crucial part of the tengu crew. Aya's just better.

I admit shes a cute character but Aya is a way better since she was actually designed to be a real character and had substantial development over the series. Momiji is a literal extra background character that is only being kept relevant because of the fandom.

Yeah it's fandom, kind of like how Bowsette blew up. I'm not against fandom but this thread is an established character vs some random extra and /jp/ has a lot of people actually invested in the official works. Anybody actually voting for Momiji most likely don't even play the games or even know anything about the official works.

And Momiji is getting destroyed in the poll numbers so that should tell you something. If you post the same exact poll on /v/ Momiji would most likely win though due to her meme status.

That's not a fair question and you know it, if you want to decide whether certain characters are interesting or not purely based on ZUN's work - you're free to do so, but you can't expect the entire board to do the same when most of the character discussion on here is influenced by the fanon. Momiji is a particularly extreme case, but that doesn't make your assumption that anything filled in by the fanon is to be discarded any less unreasonable.

influenced by the fanon≠not having a personality at all, we all know on this board that the fanon is important when we are talking about touhou, but every (good) character already has a personality even before the fanon touches them, obviously a character who has no personality outside the canon will have no flaws and even her wolf ears are a fanon creation that is why momiji is so appealing to seconaries

Yes, actually. The three tengu article in AFiEU shows Momiji to be quite polite and timid. Basically an overworked office lady at the bottom of the ladder.
Sure it's not much of a character, but it's definitely something.

ZUN may give characters the short end of the stick sometimes and leave them a complete blank slate, however, it is still important to consider that there are consistent traits whenever it comes to portrayals of Momiji in fan media. That consistency is what helps her be an actual character as opposed to a blob of conceptual goo, even though other characters may have more defining traits because they've actually been given the courtesy of being shaped by the Word of God. Because of this, I think saying she has no personality is erroneous.

Oof, you've hit the mark on this one, it boils down to this in a lot of stuff. Some bigger authors such as Zounose play around with the "loyal" part and paint her as someone that is confused as to whether her friends or her duties as a wolf tengu are more important, but such cases are few and far between. Despite that, I feel like such work stands out and is very memorable to people. Although, I won't lie, you saying she's often nothing more than a moe blob is so on-point it hurts.

Momijis ears may be fanon but they have made their way into official works so does it really matter at this point? It's the same with Aya and her wings, not really sure about her pointy ears but its probably the same. There's been so many threads on /jp/ about this already.
