ok so /jp I actually liked utawarerumono. I thought the characters where full and flushed out, I enjoyed the art, and I liked the baw ending. Is there another VN that leaves you with the same ending and has the same scope of storyline emphasis like this game?

Pretty much this. The SRPG part was poor, the characters remained undeveloped, and plot-wise it was forgettable.

I guess it's passable for an eroge though. I hate lowering my game standards for these things though; that's my biggest pet peeve about eroge with gameplay elements.

If you liked Utawarerumono, then I would recommend loading up that Playstation emulator and playing Suikoden 1 or Vandal Hearts 1. Those were basically the games Utawarerumono was trying to be (but failed at it in every way).

Utawarerumono, unlike 99% of what /jp/ calls overrated shit, actually is overrated. That said, the story isn't bad* and it's a good 'first eroge' for people to start off with. Would be nice if it was made with:
1) No SRPG portion, or any of this 'pretend gameplay' business whatsoever.
2) A longer script
3) Better pacing - don't start the damn story in the latter 10% of the game.

*actually, Utawarerumono's story is good.
But it's badly told.
