So much wasted space; at least 3 more kanji per line could be fit there, plus 2 in the vertical.

From 12x9 to 14x12, or from 108 to 168 squares, a 55% increase. Every 2 sheets you'd be saving a third one.

God.

As many as 40 percent of boys and 25 percent of girls with persistent conduct problems display significant social-cognitive impairments. Some of these deficits include immature forms of thinking (such as egocentrism), failure to use verbal mediators to regulate his or her behavior, and cognitive distortions, such as interpreting a neutral event as an intentional hostile act. Children with ODD have difficulty controlling their emotions or behaviors. In fact, students with ODD have limited social knowledge that is based only on individual experiences, which shapes how they process information and solve problems cognitively.

people who say you can learn kanji just by reading words are only half-right. the brain has an interesting way of only learning what it needs to get by. its very possible to learn a lot of words and only store a vague outline of the shapes of those words in your memory - rather than each individual kanji itself and its components.

It's a beginner's trap. It teaches you how to distinguish between words in your Anki deck, rather than learning kanji. When you start it's pretty easy, doesn't take a genius to distinguish between 響く and 泳ぐ. And even when kanji start looking extremely similar you might not even notice because it's a unique compound. You can probably go for a while before realising that 待 and 得 are different characters.
Then as you add more and more you keep having to go back to take mental notes of distinguishing features, I honestly have any idea why someone would choose to do things that way.

Are you for real dude? It's in there. And absolutely none of the components of 済 are in there. Note the triple stroke on the top, and the horizontal stroke has "wings" on it, so you're not looking at 文 as the top half of the character. And the bottom is closed pretty well, so you definitely don't have 月 in the bottom part.

Even the people you talk shit to? Even the RTKers? Even the people who post bad Japanese? Do you think talking shit to them is encouraging them to get better at Japanese? If you genuinely care about people getting better at Japanese, which maybe you do to some extent, and I mean this in as seriously as I can, you're doing an absolutely horrible job at showing it. You can't expect to put on a display of character as you have in these past few threads and expect people to believe you when you say you want, for unselfish reasons, other people to learn Japanese. since it's a time attack, it does, in fact, test for typing ability and is poor for that reason.

Then I think that should be a practically superior test of pure reading comprehension ability than reading a text out loud.

>Translation gets you into arguments about English semantics
I would expect translations to be literally graded on 1. you didn't literally misparse the Japanese and 2. you didn't leave anything out, style and flow being chucked out the window since the test is for comprehension rather than translation. Sure, yes, people could argue over this, but you could argue over the results of any test, and English semantics is more firmly within the wheelhouse of most people in this thread than how native a pronunciation is.

Nah, reading out loud is better for a public community because then multiple people can answer without you worrying about them plagiarizing each other. Plus typing stuff out is prone to people getting made fun of for making typos, whereas with speech, if you say the wrong thing it's immediately obvious and you can stumble and correct it. No reasonable person would take points off for that. People stumble reading out loud in their native languages too, unless they're trained in it.

In order to understand Japanese sentence structure, you need to understand three things, how they interact, and what that means for grammatical constructions.

1) Japanese is a "topic-comment" language, not a "subject-predicate" language. New information is conveyed by how the entire statement relates to the topic. Not how the verb/adjective/direct object relate to the subject.

2) Japanese places descriptive things to the left. Something that falls on the right side of a phrase is less likely to be a description and more likely to be new information.

3) Japanese is a pro-drop language. It prefers to leave things entirely unstated unless they are important for understanding or they are being emphasized/stressed.

These are all very intuitive if you understand Japanese well enough, as well as how they interact, and also what that means for the general "DNA" Japanese uses for grammatical constructions.

If you want to attempt to understand any of this consciously, you need to understand how and why information is conveyed through language. What the "game" of communication is like.

It's a terrible idea to try to understand this consciously. You really SHOULD subscribe to "don't think, feel". But if you insist on thinking, you've asked in the right place, because I just so happen to be here!

This is where those three things from the beginning come back.

1) Japanese is a "topic-comment" language.
Meaning of 1) The subject is not always "old" information. The subject is, in fact, sometimes the thing that the writer/speaker is trying to teach you about.

2) Descriptive things tend to be towards the left.
Meaning of 2) The further right something is in the sentence, structure-wise, the more likely it is that the author is trying to teach it to you.

3) Pro-drop.
Meaning of 3) If something is said at all, and they didn't need to say it, there's a good chance it's important.

>> No.21107009

I'm guessing it's loosely related to regional dialect variations in pre-literacy Japan and what the characters sounded like in middle Chinese when they started to get imported. You'd probably have civil servants in various areas writing down surnames for the first time in history by trying to basically make a Chinese transliteration. So the original pronunciation might remain but attached to that strange Chinese-written name. From there you might have local variation and experimentation. But because of the importance of names, the pronunciation probably remained fairly static, especially after the creation of Kana. So while the language changed, names stayed, and were fixed to Chinese characters at some point in time in the past.

O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Jamal.

I have a bit over 10k words in my mining deck, but I still keep mixing up similar kanji.
Should I bother with RTK this late? I read into its first dozen or so pages and it's giving me keywords that are completely confusing and arbitrary and directly interfere with words that I already learned. I'm worried that it will actually cause more damage than help.

Maybe I should just do one of those 200 radical decks?

You'd know this if you actually had the book, and all of this is way beyond its "first dozen pages". These are all primitive meanings. Either because that component gains that meaning from another character (球 - 王, 頭 - 頁, 自 - 鼻), or because the real meaning is too vague to be useful in telling stories. They are just names given to the radicals, the meaning of the original character is unchanged.

Here's how it is: It's difficult to memorize and then sell a delivery of a script that includes Japanese you don't already know. Dogen using a script literally does not matter, he's good and that's that. He writes his own scripts and he delivers it so flawlessly that it's easily assumed that he's actually at that level. If you honestly believe otherwise then I'm willing to give you a script of a language you don't know (it's completely phonetic) and letting you give it a try over vocaroo. You will not be able to do it, period.

somehow you seem to have glossed over my whole point. someone can read well in japanese but be unable to speak well. i can read fine (n1+ plus) but if you put me in a convo with a japanese person i am going to fumble and say a lot of stupid ungrammatical shit. dogen presents his speech to be perfect by using scripts. im sure that he does not sound anywhere near as good when he's not cutting on every line.

im not suggesting he doesn't understand his scripts, that would be dumb, they're all very simple. he's not reading translations of das kapital or something.

a native person could write dogen's script, he can read it and understand it and then speak it.

it's not his level, he's just able to comprehend written native (simple) japanese. it has literally nothing to do with your weird idea of being able to speak another language without knowing it at all.

im starting to see why it took you a week to memorise two minutes of speech (that you probably understood when reading fine lol)

why would you be qualified to give advice when you've been learning for 5 years and literally cant read, and when you're challenged on it you say "oh i dont care about reading i just want a gf" ok well why dont you go give advice in the normie boards. most people here want advice about how to get good at READING JAPANESE.

LMAO this is even worse than i thought. you think that knowing shit is helpful? are you a krashenite?

you actually have a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation if you are making that english teacher comparison; there's a difference between an advanced L2 learner giving another beginner L2 learner advice on how to go about learning the language. the english teacher in your example never actually went through the experience of trying to learn for himself. whereas i actually have went through and tried many many methods to get to the level where I can READ JAPANESE (unlike you btw) and therefore im actually extremely qualified to give advice on what I believe works and doesn't.

you on the other hand are just here with some academic research that's all biased as fuck and based on absolute bullshit dispensing so called wisdom like "output from day 1!"

I don't care about kanji so I have no plan set out. Probably after becoming real fluent I'll go back and learn the kanji. That's how native kids learn kanji and it's much easier for them since, as CureDolly puts it, the kanji fit in to a system they already know. But that's assuming I decide to go back and learn kanji.

>how many words (kanji only no furigana) do you think you can read after a year of learning?

Don't join the discord. I joined once and got kicked because I didn't know what 肺 was during the entrance exam quiz. Then the quizmaster DM'd me and started calling me an idiot and a dekinai and told me to give up and kill myself. I'm a bit of an emotional person sometimes, I admit, and that really hit me hard, so much that I uninstalled anki for awhile. He kept messaging me every few days and I eventually had to block him for my mental health. I thought that was it then then I saw the quizmaster at a grocery store in my town the other day. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a dekinai and bother him and ask him for a rematch quiz or anything
He said, “あっちへいって!もううるさい!"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “えっ?えっ?” and holding up a piece of paper with his discord link on it. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him 草 as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen umeboshi onigiri in his hands without paying.
The middle-aged girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “あの、すみません、客さま!” At first he kept pretending to be gaijin and not understand her, but eventually turned back around and actually couldn't understand her.
When she took one of the onigiri and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent my japanese from being permacrippled” and then turned around and draw a kanji in the air. I don’t even think it was a real kanji. After she scanned each onigiri and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by saying "クイズで死んでこい!" really loudly.
