We always get this cracked glass effect. Like someone punched it? Maybe shot it. But regardless, this is an element to the mystery that is unique to the idea that this is a VN.

Alright. Nanjo walks into a room where the culprit is monitoring everything on CCTV. Culprit has a camera and a remote turret gun set up that they have to fire manually.

This way, the culprit can look at Nanjo's face, and Nanjo can look at the culprit's face, without necessarily facing each other. Only real iffy thing about this is if a manually activated turret attached to a camera counts as "direct" or a "trap."

Feet on the ground doesn't mean standing. The weapon could be anything to activate this turret as it were. Again, issue here is the distinction between trap and direct method of murder. Ep 2 is an entire catbox story written as an offering for Maria: one where her mother finds she loves her in the end, where she fights to the blink of annihilation for her, and where all the misunderstanding are resolved into pure bliss. "Maria resurrected the lost love of her mother". The entire narrative is built on that.

Beatrice is before anything a sweet girl, her slightly macabre taste notwithstanding. Ep 2 is a very, very sweet lie.

In case anyone is interested, I just found this weird ass (probably Japanese) SMB1 romhack that is apparently lost and not hosted anywhere else. I don't know where the hell it came from. You can run a bit but not too fast, which makes it pretty hard to beat.

The thing is, the usual Mario music is replaced by SORA NO MUKOU from Higurashi (Tanashi Miyoko's theme, basically. It also plays during the ending epilogue).

I was playing this thing to check it out because the edited graphics looked nice, but I randomly decided to unmute the sound and was surprised to hear an 8-bit rendition of Sora no Mukou. What the fuck. It's just the first few notes, not the full song, but still.

Does anyone know where the hell this hack came from? This is the LAST thing I expected to hear in an old Japanese Mario hack of all things.

The low running speed represents Miyoko being chased by the orphanage assholes (who had longer legs and were much faster than a little girl, so she was slow in comparison and had to split up with a group of other girls).

The fact that you can't enter any pipes (so far, I'm at world 4) represents her trauma from when she was almost drowned in a drainage tank full of shit as punishment. It's all XXXXXXX in the VN, but it's implied that she was in fact thrown naked into a pool of shit.

The fact that this is a SUPER MARIO BROS 1 hack, which didn't exist in 1983 but came out before 1986, means that this is indeed Lambda/Miyoko's origin story. It's a story that happens between Higurashi and Umineko.

Hell, the music in most of the levels is literally the one that plays during the Miyoko/grandpa flashbacks at the very beginning of Matsuribayashi. It only turns into different versions of Dear You (the "official" main theme of Higurashi) when she's in dangerous places like the bottom of the sea or Bowser's castle. Because the protagonists of Higurashi are her enemies during the story, so their theme song represents the failure of Miyo's goals (danger).

The princess is locked up in a cage at the end of each castle, which reminds me of the OTHER punishment Miyoko was subjected to at the orphanage.

Miyoko/Miyo is actually my favorite Higurashi character. I think she's pretty underrated as a character.

I also think it's bullshit that RGD didn't have a Koizumi expy. I mean, come on! That guy would be in his prime during that time period and would fit perfectly into the story.

RGD is actually pretty balanced in terms of fanservice.

One of the main secondary characters is Miyoko's aunt, Meryl Tanashi, who was killed in WW2 in the Higurashi timeline but is alive in this alternate world and works as a high-class prostitute. She's popular as fuck because of her petite body. I don't remember if they ever revealed her original Japanese first name, though. But yeah, she's meant to be a sibling of Miyoko's dad.

The main Higurashi cast is represented by Nina, a pretty cute teenage girl from Hinamizawa (the fact that she comes from there is implied in a very subtle way that most readers will probably miss). She failed to become a prostitute because her Hinamizawa accents apparently turns men off when she tries to talk dirty, so she gave up on it and became part of a trio of orphan losers working for a Japanese mafia.

Umineko gets tons of representation. There is a beautiful rendition of Hope, a Battler expy who is kind of a bastard but is similar to him because of his "ihihi" laugh and his tendency to fuck up when people need him the most. He's a bit incompetent but not as much as Battler.

There are also several other expies like James Tomitake and Maurice Mononobe (who looks just like Okonogi and is everything that the Higurashi Okonogi ever wanted to be, since he gets to fight real wars this time around).

So I'd say it's pretty balanced in terms of fanservice. We even have the Bern/Lambda duo represented in Meryl and Stella. Overall, I'd say RGD has more of an Umineko feel (mainly the western stuff) but has a lot of Higurashi references, while Higanbana feels more like Higurashi but is full of references to Umineko.

I'm not even halfway through the second season and I already love the fuck out of the cast. It gets really good. I can't believe literally nobody has read RGD. Ryuukishi's VNs are already pretty niche, but it feels like not even 5% of the people who read Umineko bothered to give RGD a chance, for whatever reason.

I personally loved everything about it, especially the nostalgic elementary school atmosphere and the sountrack (which doesn't reach the heights of Umineko but doesn't have a single meh or forgettable track, IMO). I can see why someone wouldn't like it, though.

After giving R07's four major works a proper chance, I honestly can't even rank them. I just can't decide which one I like the least or which one is my favorite. I guess Umineko would be the best overall, though. But my favorite alternates between the four every time I look back on them.

I started with the Higurashi anime back when I didn't know English. I fell in love with it, even though looking back it was a pretty poor adaptation. I eventually read the old Mangagamer version of the VN and by the end of it I was pretty good at English. It was quite an endeavor, every chapter felt incredibly long and I read at a snail's pace because I had to stop to look up new words every few minutes. But I enjoyed every minute of it. It was like an extended, more in-depth version of a story I already loved to begin with. It became my favorite story of all time and it made me respect Ryukishi more than any other author in the world. His writing style was clumsy but also incredibly warm and charming.

I eventually decided to read Umineko, completely convinced that NOTHING could ever surpass Higurashi. It fucking blew me away. I still prefer Higurashi in certain aspects and I'm much more attached to its characters. But Umineko was fucking fantastic and exceeded all my expectations. I still can't believe Ryukishi managed to write TWO absolute masterpieces one after the other. Higurashi alone was already a miracle.

Now, Higanbana and RGD are definitely not as good as Higurashi or Umineko. They are amazing at what they set out to do, but they never intended to be 100+ hour long epics or anything like that. So I can't really blame them for not being on the same level.

That said, Ryukishi's writing (which had already improved a lot in Umineko) drastically improved in Higanbana and especially RGD. There is no more useless repetition of ideas and the narration manages to be concise without losing its depth. Both VNs are extremely well-paced. I don't know if it has to do with the format of these stories or if Ryukishi has really improved his writing overall, though. For all we know, WTC5 could have a super slow intro again.

I loved everything about Higanbana and its second night since the beginning. It's has some weaker chapters, but it's an experience like no other and it fits really well with my tastes. I love it so fucking much.

I initially avoided RGD and didn't give a shit about it because it wasn't entirely drawn by Ryukishi and I loved his art. I eventually tried the first season and I certainly enjoyed it, but the others weren't translated yet and I ended up forgetting about it.

Years later (I'm talking 4 to 5 years) I decided to read the whole thing from the beginning and holy fuck it's amazing. I don't know what it is about it, but sometimes I find myself loving this cast of characters more than even Higurashi and Umineko. The Higurashi cast has a special place in my heart, the Umineko cast is very interesting on a psychological level and the Higanbana cast is simply nostalgic. But the RGD cast is just FUN as fuck to be around. I love their interactions, the cheesy one-liners and the overall story, which is basically the early Ushiromiya family politics from EP1 on steroids.

So yeah. As a massive fan of Higurashi and Umineko, I find Higanbana and RGD just as enjoyable, even if they are somewhat minor works. All four of them keep competing for the number 1 spot in my personal ranking of favorite VNs. Objectively, Umineko is probably the best. But subjectively, my favorite changes whenever I look back on them.

I don't have high expectations for WTC5 because I just can't imagine how Ryukishi will top his previous works. He'll probably create something great and surprise me again, but right now I can't even conceive the idea. I can't imagine liking a new story as much as those four, even though every single one of them surprised me when I though nothing could match the previous one.

This one isn't anything special and the sound quality is pretty mediocre, but it just sounds like something straight out of Higurashi. Quality included.

It plays during some of the few relaxing moments of Higanbana. when kids are just goofing around. It makes me think of Mion and the gang playing card games or some shit.

What's the deal with the Umineko EP2 and EP3 openings? They were in the game files but didn't play during the actual story. Instead, the EP1 opening played three times before being replaced by a new one for EP4.

Why did Ryukishi decide to do it this way? I thought those openings were pretty cool and fit those episodes a lot more than the EP1 opening. Maybe they gave too much away? There is the "No Dine No Knox" quote and also a part where Shannon and Kanon merge together.

The problem with trying to figure out the truth of Umineko is that we really can't really on "the heart."
At least not as Will frames it. Will's heart might be too gentle.

Don't you find it strange how Will kind of brushes over the fact that Kinzo is a pedophile rapist? We see it as him having tact, but really all he gets out of Kinzo is "I poured my affection... on the wrong person.'

I'm not saying he molested Jessica, I'm just saying if we accept that Kinzo is that kind of guy, then ANY girl who lived on the island with him would be in trouble. That's an important piece of information. We all feel bad when Erika slanders Natsuhi by implying a sexual relationship with Kinzo, but the old man might have engaged in precisely that.

But it's sort of fucked, I guess. Jessica is iffy about Battler groping her, and Shannon is just fine with it(being groped)

Does an aversion to being groped = sexual trauma? Does a willingness to being groped = no sexual trauma? IRL woman's sexuality can seem like a roulette wheel. Girls who act slutty are reserved, girls who are reserved are slutty. Some people are consumed by the actions done against them, some are more resilient.
