This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, bangers, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

i finally listened to some guy on here who said listening skill must be trained without subs to really get better past a certain level because reading gets in the way... he was right

ive been watching anime with zero subs today and so far i'm definitely seeing improvement, my ear is tuning in more and i'm picking up more things. YAY

so thanks, guy who insisted i take off subs for anime. u are good

Yes, I'm always torrenting, though I get HS for webrip quality and just turn off the subs and load captions if available. That said, there are sites hosting raws like smotret-anime and some other cancer.

I wish there was a way to rip timed captions from TV without actually living in Japan, those are pretty much the only ones missing - anicobin and yomu cover quite a lot, but timed subs are always more convenient.

new cards/day is set to 10, so for the rest of the week i’m just reviewing and reading (while marking stuff) till i run out of new cards. then REFILL.

yesss you fucking said it.

focusing on how to write the individual radicals or "pieces" of kanji (not all of them are included on the official list of radicals) changed the whole kanji game for me.

it became no longer a struggle of memorizing 10~20 strokes per kanji, but simply a game of putting together 2~4 blocks of sub-characters i already know by heart. it's actually fun to write kanji now :)

that being said though, i didn't do this via RTK. i did it as i learned words in context from reading and creating personalized sentence/word decks.

then i picked out each radical from each new word i learned. it's really not necessary to do it via RTK and for me it was much more fun having it be part of the rest of my study. learning 2000 words is MORE than enough to learn every radical. they repeat so often, you could probably learn them all in like 500 words.

you just have to make a habit of pointing them out to yourself/practicing writing them.

also, since i'm learning through words i encounter in context, there is no guarantee i'll learn a kanji considered "easy" before one considered "harder". & i don't mind that lol. i'm just havin fun with it.

recent new kanji:

躙 both from じゅうりん
墜 from 墜落
厭 from 厭う
錆 from 錆び付く
詮 from 詮索
煽 from 煽る
猟 from 猟師
籠 from かご (knew that word already but not the kanji)

I don't mean this in a rude way, but it's not that simple; short sentences can be more complex than some longer sentences. it all depends on how much of what in a sentence you already know, and how much more you need to know to understand it, which varies a lot from sentence to sentence. all you can do is just fill in the gaps of your knowledge. there's no exact point where you will definitively not get lost in a long sentence, and that assumes that you won't get lost in short sentences.

is there a study comparing the differences between someone who's finished RTK and someone who hasn't? i'm skeptical of RTK's benefits because completing RTK takes hundreds of hours and weeks/months of effort and someone could easily spend all that time reading and doing core and learning more words.

the more words you learn the easier it becomes to acquire new words, so at some point RTK's hypothetical advantage of "increased efficiency in learning new words" would disappear. who's to say that this hypothetical RTK advantage isn't outweighed by the hundreds of hours of initial investment?

the basic fundamental point is when you learn a piece of vocab you necessarily have to have some way of remembering the kanji that it is made up of

you see the word 頑張る, if you want to remember to read this word you need to have some kind of 工夫 to remember a) the meaning, b) how it's pronounced, and c) what it looks like

now your choice as far as i can tell is a) remember it as a whole as some kind of image, b) 'learn' each kanji individually and then remember the combination produces this word

someone who has done rtk just needs to "remember that the combination produces this word" as well as the reading+meaning of the word, skipping the added strain of having to learn kanji each time you learn a word. this strain obviously decreases with time and kanji learned, but you will probably be overlapped in vocab as an rtker jaunts through every new piece of vocab he encounters.

you're not understanding the conversation. someone said someone who doesn't do RTK views kanji as random scribbles. but obviously people learn to read japanese without doing RTK so there must be some sort of time limit on how long someone who doesn't do RTK would view kanji as indecipherable scribbles. i asked how long someone who doesn't do RTK would view kanji as scribbles and he said he couldn't read properly without using furigana after 2 years. so either he's retarded (possible) and doesn't represent other learners, or he's trying to claim that because he studied in a half-assed way as a kid that somehow this means everyone needs to do RTK. it's mind-boggling how RTK advocates lack so much perspective if they want to extrapolate their half-assed attempts before doing RTK on to others.

alternatively he's saying that kanji are only scribbles insofar as you can't write them from memory, but that you could still easily acquire a large vocabulary through reading without ever having to write or do RTK. in which case he makes my point.

The benefit of rtk, though this isn't exclusive to rtk, is that, if done properly, 1. you will be able to write the kanji learned from memory, 2. you will be able to distinguish similar kanji from one another without the use of context (which depending on the situation might not even help you), and 3. you will be able to understand the meaning of a lot of words without even knowing how to read them. Then all you have to do is learn the appropriate readings.

So at the very least it would seem if you don't care about being able to write kanji from memory then you don't need rtk, right? Well even if not, like I said with point 2, rtk (though not exclusively rtk) allows you to be able to learn the nitty-gritty parts of kanji. I would be slightly hesitant towards your method anyways because I want to be able to distinguish similar kanji without any problems, but if someone doesn't care too much about it then rtk would definitely be more of hassle than benefit.

true but these are rare cases and not recognizing 20/2200 doesn't make it useless for the rest and mostly stem from RTK's fatal flaw, which is introducing similar kanji all in the same chapter so you keep mixing them up forever, especially if their keywords or meanings are similar

this "can write but couldn't recognize" literally only happens on the first time anyway, then you never forget it when you go like "o yea it was that one now i remember"

I did Anki for years, but I hit "hard" when I made a little mistake, like missing a 濁点 or long sound (like しょう instead of しょ).
Now I just keep making these mistakes over and over, and they became pretty much ingrained. I started failing those cards now to get better at them, but I keep remembering them wrong over and over, even making the same mistake 3-4 times in a single day as I keep pressing "again" over and over.
