This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.
https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/
Old guide for those afraid of change:
https://djtguide.neocities.org/

You don't enjoy Japanese media as much as you think you do and nobody will like you for knowing Japanese. Don't bother learning Japanese.

This is the last thing I'm gonna say on these threads: Like many of you, I was myself for some time at a crossroad with ajatt/mia and matt himself and his followers. But when you actually put your ego away, you realize they're on the whole right. You don't have to follow their religion, but if you want to get the best results in the quickest amount of time, you would be best to take what you can from their philosophy. If you don't want the best results in the shortest amount of time, do something else. Good luck ya weebs.

I started learning Japanese recently and I started to realize just how many different meanings certain words have. Context helps some, but if not for the kanji in the manga I'm reading I would've been very lost on the meaning of some lines.

Conversely, it's really convenient how the manga lists the hirigana next to the kanji for all the text. Too bad they don't do that for the chapter titles.

I'm very frustrated because I keep forgetting stuff I learned in previous lessons. And they don't always show up later.
I also feel like some words and kanjis it teaches me aren't a good priority. Some of them I almost never encountered in anime and manga. And I've been told by you guys that some grammar is used in very unnatural examples.
At this point I don't even know if I should continue.

This will sort itself out once you actually read more shit consistently
Words and Kanji in Genki might not be "prioritiy" for you but they are all common and you should know them

You don't have to finish Genki, but it's a fairly basic book so nothing that you learn there is going to be a waste of time.
If you forget something, then go back and re-read it. It's natural that you don't have 100% recall. If you have problems with conjugations, practice a bit. Genki has a textbook that helps you do some verb and adjective conjugation practice to drill it in.

If you really hate it, don't push and burn yourself out, though. Every minute that you spend studying Japanese is going to make you better at it, even if you don't follow the absolute optimal route (which also varies from person to person). You can stop Genki, just don't stop studying Japanese.

>> No.20943934

If you're reading every single word and going through genki like mud you're fucking up

I meant the kanji themselves, but knowing words is important too because if you don't know enough kanji and enough words, you just simply can't make the transition without talking a lot of time to look stuff up. when you do the actual transition, to be sure, you're going to have to look stuff up, but you want it to be so little that you wouldn't be better off just doing more studying of something else. it's not the easiest thing to gauge when you get down to the nitty gritty, but if you don't even know half of the 常用漢字 you're just wasting your time. People who uses Anki help me understand something. How does Anki quizzes relate to when you forgot things and look it up outside Anki?

The idea behind the due date (eg 4 days later) above the button for a card is that Anki thinks, based on an SRS model, that I'm on the edge of forgetting that card in about 4 days time of non-use, right? And by forcing me to remember it on the 4th day, I'm extending my memory of that word for more days.

But what if you look up that word when you found that word in a book, say, 3 days later? Then, when Anki asks it again, it does not quiz me on my edge of forgetting, but merely on the day after I re-remember it, ruining the whole forgetting curve thing.

I keep mistaking the reading for 不謹慎 with ふきんじん, so the card keeps coming back. If it was due in 8 days, but I came across it in 6 days, looked it up, what do I do with the Anki card?

while i'm confused at all this i'm just gonna read (and look up words) some more

That means avoiding any Japanese content outside of Anki intervals as much as possible as to not interfere with the spaced repeition system.

>> No.20944801

>>20944778
don't worry about that shit
anki is supposed to be a supplement, it's not like you can never learn a word if you don't exactly follow the "forgetting curve"
besides that, if you come across it in 6 days and therefore more easily answer it correctly on the 8th day you'll have to remember it for a longer period next time, if you get that one right everything is okay anyways and if you fuck it up it just goes back to the start

>> No.20944806

>>20944778
あんたゲイ
With SRS, you don't see the word for say, 8 days, not because seeing the word is somehow harmful, but because you want to see the cards at the longest spacing to save time and effort. More exposure to the word is of course better. Anki is your backup and if you do forget the word in say another 16 days, it'll test you again and remind you. But if you keep reading and seeing the word even more, of course you'll learn more.

I can't help you with drama but I've been inundated with this for the past week or so and I can't recommend マツコの知らない世界 or 日本人の3割しか知らないこと くりぃむしちゅーのハナタカ enough. The latter I think is beginner friendly, as it has a lot of words written on screen for every single thing. It's also about unusual facts/methods about daily life, which is gold if you're a trivia fan. Good spread of topics. Of course most of the trivia won't be applicable since it's Japanese centric, but hey, you don't know, maybe that knowledge on why Japanese restaurants can't allow you to open your own beer bottles will be useful someday.

Sadly if you want high quality videos you're out of luck. I downloaded them off video.9tsu.com using youtube-dl and they're like 426x328.

no, but you're missing the point. it doesnt matter how much you watch without subs, if you build connections from audible material with subtitles, you're not training your ear, you're training your reading ability. you would be better off just strictly watching it without subs. the problem is your method doesn't do what you actually think it's doing. you're not going to build your ear if you're relying on text to understand material. it's a guise, and you're inadvertently fucking up how you process and understand Japanese.

if i watch a whole episode without subs, and i only understand 70% of it, then i watch again with subs to fill in the rest, it’s not going to erase that 70% i caught on the first listen. it’s not going to do anything to that 70% because i already understood it.

You misunderstand. I'm not saying the 70% doesn't exist, I'm saying whatever percentage of comprehension comes from subtitles, it doesn't get added to the percentage from listening. that and strictly watching while paying attention to the subs is different yes, but any logical connections you make from looking stuff up with and reading the subs isn't being added to your listening comprehension; it doesn't matter how different what you're describing is, because if you aren't drawing the connections from listening you're not improving your listening. listening to a part again you already know the meaning to because you looked it up can't help your hearing.

Japanese verbs, like most languages, have multiple forms

する (dictionary, plain present)
できる (plain potential)
して (te-form)
させる (plain causative)
される (plain passive)
させられる ( plain passive causative)
しろ (imperative)

all the verbs below する are different forms of する

3 months of learning to write 2200 kanji and learn their meaning while being unable to read is better than 3 months of learning the english meaning + reading of 1000 kanji (lowball estimate) while being able to actually read?

that sounds pretty subjective to me. but i'll bet most people would prefer being able to read a bit after 3 months than not. so that's why i don't think RTK is a good idea even if you can argue there are hypothetical longterm benefits to doing RTK as a beginner.

this is a problem of the individual themselves, not the theory. plenty of people don't think it to be "too hard". That's not a lack of efficiency in the method it's a lack of character, in potentially many different ways, of the one doing the method.

That explains all the posts on /r/learnjapanese where people spend 30 minutes a day reading Genki 1+2 for years rather than spending all their free time on textbook study and reading native material.

it's just....idk. you either get it or you don't and it seems djt doesn't get it. i think i'll follow actual experts in japanese like heisig. you guys can follow jamal or whomever.

Some do, some don't. People actually really hate consuming native material when starting out for whatever reason. Moreover the daily time spent toward studying is important. If someone is only spending 30 minutes of their free time a day that indicates they don't value efficiency that much.

Which is fine. That's most people. Not even AJATT cultists actually value efficiency above all else.

It is. Extremely so, in fact, very tough to last more than an hour or two through a story-heavy game or VN in one sitting. I've passed N1 by a comfortable margin a few years back, but reading content aimed at natives still feels exhausting.

I suspect that it is partly self-inflicted, due to myself being unwilling to settle for "yeah, I understand 90% of the text and can kinda infer the meaning of another 5%, so I will just sit back and enjoy the game" - I interrupt the gameplay flow frequenty and look up stuff obsessively, until I understand everything.

Just for context: I'm ESL, but I've never felt anything similar when interacting with content written in English, it just doesn't tire me at all. Obviously, my English is still much stronger than my Japanese, but it's still peculiar.

a young man named calvin struggled for a year to motivate himself to learn japanese. at one point he sold his arcade stick and GPU so that he could focus on japanese. he would take frequent breaks and then come back with motivational social media posts like "ok i missed japanese so now i know i want to learn it" but he'd fall right back into the same pits over and over. finally within the past week or two he deleted his social media accounts and wrote that he's done trying to learn.

something like that. i don't get the spanish portion of the image though. maybe it refers to the fact that someone caught calvin posting something about wanting to learn spanish a few months ago even though he was supposed to be learning japanese.

This describes my experience perfectly.
I'm ESL too and I can read novels in English for hours without getting tired, but I need to concentrate and think hard when reading Japanese and need frequent breaks. I'm not as autistic about understanding every single detail, though it bothers me if I move on while unsure about a line.

Anyway, it's most likely the need for constant concentration that tires you out. Especially with Japanese where carrying context from one sentence to the next is so important.
