Exactly, L and R are sort of interchangeable and neither L nor R is the exact sound of the Japanese り, so spelling it "ma-li-sa" instead of "ma-ri-sa" is not only pointless but wrong.

On the other hand, if it's a Western word then obviously it's supposed to be whichever makes sense in the language of origin, thus Lily.

But yes, if you were pretending to be Japanese you'd say something like Riri, although it's not an exact match it's still closer to R.

The problem here is everyone is randomly mixing English and Japanese pronounciations and spellings, what's "right" depends on if you're trying to be Japanese or going by what it's "meant" to be. The problem with Marisa is that it's debatable whether ZUN intended it to be like Melissa or Marisa
