>> No.20861043

no-one who uses anki thinks you can 'learn a language' using it. it's a tool to help you remember vocab so you dont have to look it up all the time.

people use anki at the start because they can encounter more useful beginner vocab than they would naturally reading (because a) they read slowly as fuck so the 'rep rate' is extremely poor, and b) 'beginner' / 'common' words are not actually encountered as often as you might think in writing because usually native media tends not to rely on them to make their writing more interesting)

people continue to use anki because for rare words you aren't likely to come across it in a while so it might be useful to memorise so you don't have to look it up when you see it again. maybe this is unnecessary, but it's certainly not harmful, and when you're at this stage you probably won't be spending more than 15-20mins repping a day, on top of reading.

If I made an Anki deck I should add 300-400 new words each day...maybe even more since I don't know anything. And then I should review them everyday. I would quit studying in less than a week

>> No.20861074

Anki is a supplement, completely optional.
Regardless of how many thousands of cards one might end up accumulating, If you rep 20-30 minutes a day tops, I see no harm in that at all. It's those who spends hours on it that should reconsider their routines.

I'm talking about it in the context of hardly being able to read. Say a word is used every 500-1000 words, I'd say that's very common, but if you look at any text and your characters per minute is like <50 as a beginner's would be then you're having to wait a long time to see these words if there are a lot of other higher frequency words in between.

rtk doesn't teach you to recognize kanji
rtk doesn't make it significantly easier to remember words in the long run
knowing english keywords is actually a burden
keywords often have nothing at all to do with a kanji's "meaning" and heisig did not know japanese when he made RTK (as evidenced by 村 and 街 being backwards)

because it's clearly much easier to learn thousands of vocab if you dont have to worry about also remembering which kanji is which? you have a framework of kanji that you can just attach words to rather than having to do it all at once in an ad hoc way. you're much more likely to forgot some aspects

>>20863233
im talking about recognising it in the sense of seeing it in a manga for the first time and going "oh that's X kanji i already learned from RTK". it gives you a basic understanding of kanji that's useful.

Yea but you don't have to waste time learning to write kanji to do be able to read it and if you're talking about rtk they say you have to write it when I know for fact you don't and it slows you down if anything. Only think of value is the card order, radical explanation, and possibly the mnemonics.

i have n1 tho lol. i attribute the ease ive had to get to that point to rtk. never struggled with kanji once.

there's like 10 total kanji in rtk that have weird keywords, almost all of them correspond to the fundamental japanese meaning. it's hardly a valid criticism. it's a kanji memorisation method anyway, it doesn't have to teach you japanese. you're going to forget all the english keywords in like 6months anyway when you replace them w/ the japanese in your head (as i experienced)

i think this is one where you just have to feel the nihongo. it might help to think of より as something like "the sender". if you're writing a letter you might say 田中さんより ie "from tanaka". so 田中さんよりからでも is like "even if it's sent from tanaka" kind of thing. on the face if it 田中さんよりでも has the same meaning but just sounds weird as typically より+でも don't go together as often as からでも and i think it emphasises the fact of where the letter originates

The snowball is a reference to your ability to learn japanese. As you push your snowball it gets bigger and more snow is able to stick to it.
