no-one who uses anki thinks you can 'learn a language' using it. it's a tool to help you remember vocab so you dont have to look it up all the time.

people use anki at the start because they can encounter more useful beginner vocab than they would naturally reading (because a) they read slowly as fuck so the 'rep rate' is extremely poor, and b) 'beginner' / 'common' words are not actually encountered as often as you might think in writing because usually native media tends not to rely on them to make their writing more interesting)

people continue to use anki because for rare words you aren't likely to come across it in a while so it might be useful to memorise so you don't have to look it up when you see it again. maybe this is unnecessary, but it's certainly not harmful, and when you're at this stage you probably won't be spending more than 15-20mins repping a day, on top of reading.

Regardless of how many thousands of cards one might end up accumulating, If you rep 20-30 minutes a day tops, I see no harm in that at all. It's those who spends hours on it that should reconsider their routines.

Say a word is used every 500-1000 words, I'd say that's very common, but if you look at any text and your characters per minute is like <50 as a beginner's would be then you're having to wait a long time to see these words if there are a lot of other higher frequency words in between.

There's no comparison. Each semester covers half of a genki book. The only input you get is from the materials in the book and listening cds. Everything is forced into keigo even though it makes more sense to learn through casual form. Forced production is just a waste of time. i have n1 tho lol. i attribute the ease ive had to get to that point to rtk. never struggled with kanji once.

I did vncore, then mined 2k words, then I mined a thousand sentences, but if you check out the 10k core deck it's pretty much perfect sentences with clear speaking pitch perfectt natives. You can move the field around to target whatever you need help on. I was going to try it out to fuck around but it's actually pretty good I'm not going to drone them all to maturity but it's good practice sentences.

i think this is one where you just have to feel the nihongo. it might help to think of より as something like "the sender". if you're writing a letter you might say 田中さんより ie "from tanaka". so 田中さんよりからでも is like "even if it's sent from tanaka" kind of thing. on the face if it 田中さんよりでも has the same meaning but just sounds weird as typically より＋でも don't go together as often as からでも and i think it emphasises the fact of where the letter originates
