To be honest, I ONLY played the games and it pretty much teaches you squat about the characters. Everyone you meet has like 4 lines in the game and they rarely ever act much like you see everyone else portraying them as.

I think you may just be better off reading the manga or something. Though like I said I only played the games so I wouldn't know. I think most of the fan interpretations are just born from over a decade of ever increasing fan flanderizations for the characters anyway.

PCB is the most accessible while still being a good starting point. You can start at EoSD but it's not quite as, uh, "friendly".

My advice is play PCB, see if you can stand it, then go back to EoSD and play everything--literally EVERYTHING, including spinoffs--in order. That's what I did.

Do not get hung up on beating the games. If you're bad at them watch someone else play, and read stuff. I am fucking garbage at shmups, I'm a wreck at them. Still, they're worth playing. Some, like LoLK, are even "forgiving" in that there's a mode for losers like myself who don't want to game over.

The difference between a wolf and a Youkai is that the Youkai is sentient. It can reason, it can feel in full capacity as you can, it understands any turmoil it causes and holds the capacity to feel empathy, sympathy, or apathy towards it. For example, in EOSD:
Meiling's are mostly just filling the screen with colorful bullets, there's no tricks or movement puzzles to them, and very little is actually targeted at the player.
Patchy spells are an array of basic elemental themes recombined in various ways. They're also very chaotic and come off more as raw experiments in magic, or a set of unrefined hazards for the player to run through like they're an test subject.
Sakuya's are just straight up trying to knife you in various ways, practically all targeted at the player, laced with neatly organized lines of projectiles. What's neat is her second midboss fight has lost all it's elegance, with a more frenzied and unraveled version of her normal pattern, and purely random throwing anything at you as a last ditch effort to keep you from getting at the boss.

This shit right here. This is exactly the kinda thing that touhou somehow seems to avoid. Even the shitstorms IOSYS caused didn't completely destroy the core of the fanbase. It's like there's some sort of defense mechanism, where the newfag waves are partially rejected in a way that they form a "shell" around the core fanbase. Then that shell catches the next wave of newfags, and the same thing happens.

That being said, OP is going to have to accept that he's going to be floating in the outer shells forever until he can *at the very least* 1cc Imperishable Night on normal mode.

Because unlike other franchise, the core series which is the games doesn't change much no matter how the state of fanbase is.
There is also another big difference, that the non-core fanbase actually make something enjoyable that is accepted with both core and new fanbase i.e. fangames, music, doujins, etc. and it has something to do with the creator openly support derivative works but at the same time does his best to keep it separate. It results in the fanbase that is more tolerant towards new fans and their cultures have basically merged, because the games won't change no matter what and any fans can enjoy whatever they want without repercussion. I've 1cc'd all the games at least on Hard but I can still listen to IOSYS and read Bomber Grape.
That picture you're replied to can't be applied to Touhou because it's based on mindset that is generally phobic towards new fans and most importantly, the fact that developers choose to cater to them instead.

I always thought that Touhou is too autistic for the normalfags to latch onto and tear it appart. Sure some memes make it to the normalfag world but the sheer strangeness and complexity of the 2hu universe combined with how unfriendly the games are to the newcomer make it impossible to take off like for example Neptunia did.

I don't understand how people can become so attached to a franchise without having any interest in its actual core. No judging, more power to you, it's just always been difficult for me to fathom.

Like, I like a lot of the kanmusu from Kantai Collection, but because I have no interest in the game at all the characters and fan material is way less interesting to me than Touhou is, because I care about the games to some degree.

It's probably because Touhou is pretty easily accessible, despite the games being hard as balls to beat starting out. The core of Touhou is how mostly everything is free to be reinterpreted or used by others. The games, music albums, LNs, and manga are extensions to this in that they give more for people to make use of when imagining the land of Gensokyo. Though Touhou is ZUN's creation, it's special and is built around the idea that anyone can make use of Gensokyo (within reason).
