Very nice. There's a few minor imperfections here and there, but overall it's a very solid model. Nice attention to detail with stuff like her shoulder blades, hipbones, spine, etc. Though of course the most eye-catching part of a nude is the erotic areas, and you did a great job there. Her breasts look a somewhat smaller without the clothes, but they're nicely shaped, like two immaculately curved orbs. Her buttocks look VERY full, especially from that angle. Their shape also successfully conveys a feeling of softness, and it makes me wonder how they'd shift about when she walks.

Yeah, talking from experience putting even just a later of cloth on a model always gives a clear upgrade on the tits size. The naked breasts looks right to me but not sure if I should maybe make them a tad smaller for the clothed look.
Which imperfections were you thinking about? Model is still in progress so I'm always on about tweaking stuffs at this point. Guess I could model a more proper vagina too, same for nipples.

Hm, yeah. I think you're right. As much as I love big-boobed Satoko, if you're going for her official look, then her clothed chest might be just a tad too big. The nude size is right on the money though, so maybe it'd be a good idea to make a separate nude version from the one used for outfits.

As for imperfections, the biggest one that catches my attention is how high her hips are. It makes her torso look small compared to her lower body (each thigh being roughly equal to her waist in size.) I think if you kept her the same height and just lowered her hips a little bit, it'd give her a more balanced figure while still retaining her full curves.

As for official pantyshots, school or otherwise, I can't think of any off the top of my head. There was one anime bonus clip where the wind's blowing really strong. Shion gets a pantyshot, but Satoko keeps her skirt pinned down. I'll keep looking though. There might be one I just forgot.

Lambda and Erika are definitely up there, but come on. It's gotta be Beato. Sayaka Ohara's portrayal was the most standout, Not only with regards to her performance but also the sheer amount of lines she had to do. Beato's VA could make or break the whole thing for anyone still on the fence. They need someone with a very wide range who can capture all of the different moods and demeanors Beato has. From the trollish cackling, to the regal stoicism when she gets serious. Even handling stuff like Kuwadorian Beato and all the other versions.

Yeah, I think that's better. Still stacked as all hell for her age, but more in-line with her canon depictions. It's still a bit too big for her PS2 look, but it matches Ryukishi's original look for her, so I say it's good.

As a side, this animation kinda looks like she just took off her bra with how her breasts slump down. I can see her doing that for some punishment game.

Bless you anon. Don't give in to those titty hating character designers. I was alway uncertain on whether Hanyuu was meant to be bigger or smaller than Satoko. Everyone else is clearly sorted. Rika < Satoko < Rena <Mion/Shion < Takano. Only Hanyuu is uncertain. Of course, another fun thing to play around with is the shape, giving variety to each figure in more than just proportions.

I noticed that too, but I waved it off because it sounds more natural coming from English speakers and rhymes with the English pronunciation of "Shannon". Most of the human cast have Western names and they're going to be pronounced in a Western way rather than "Batora" or "Jooji".

I believe it disrupts the natural reading speed by forcing the reader to wait for a line to finish being spoken and I recommend it as an incentive to read Umineko again because it feels like a story that has to be read more than once to get the most out of it. I think the voices are terrific and I have no problem with people reading Umineko for the first time with voices, I just suggest it for a second playthrough.

Because voice acting can disrupt someone's normal reading either making them wait until the voice line finishes or making them cut off every line halfway through, which at that point it's kind of pointless. A visual novel designed entirely without voice acting in mind has its own reading cadence and pace that is different for every person. And perhaps some people don't want to use English voices? Plenty of people would prefer the Japanese voices or none at all, for the same reasons why some people prefer subtitles over dubbing of other media.

Transforming 2D anime hairstyles into 3D (figures, 3D models, or otherwise) is hard. If the model manages to stay true to original 2D, the hair strands usually end up looking like plastic turds.

It depends. There are about 2200-2300 total sprites in the original version, though most characters have only a couple poses with various face swaps. Same for the Steam version. The PS2 version added a bunch more poses for characters, ending up with about 8100 sprites.

As for backgrounds, there's about 900 for the original/steam (they both use the same ones). Just looking at the files, the PS3 version has about 2500 "backgrounds" though this number is a bit misleading as it also includes all the CGs as well as various effects like the golden butterflies, magical barriers, the meta world's flowery overlay, etc. As with the sprites, there's various versions of many PS3 backgrounds, showing a single location in different situations like morning, night, storming, etc.

I understand not wanting to spoil anything, but sometimes the premise alone isn't enough to catch one's interest. A concept that only shows up in a later episode such as Mystery vs Fantasy and the Red Truth could be just the thing. If you feel it's necessary, spoil a little more and see if any of it sounds interesting enough for him to want to stick with it. That way revealing a few things upfront and seeing disinterest is better than wasting hours only for him to end up dropping it.

My primary focuses are Gnosticism and Discordianism, which I find very relevant in Umineko. From the Gnostic side of things, there's Witches as embodiments of Platonic ideals who make a game out of playing Demiurge, and how the Meta-World ties in with the World of Ideas, for example. On the Discordian side, Umineko's magic fits within a chaos magic framework, and Eris as presented in it isn't exactly unlike a Witch herself. It's a big read even I haven't finished yet but the Nag Hamaddi scriptures are the closest to a "primary source" for Gnosticism. I've been reading Marvin Meyer's revised translation. For Discordianism I'd recommend Principia Discordia, its "holy text", to set the stage. I put it in quotes because Discordianism is, for lack of better words, full of shenanigans. It's more of a work of metafiction that makes itself a holy text through its own rules, much like Umineko itself. After a certain point I find my /lit/ and my /x/ to be one and the same. It seems you've already read The Neverending Story, which is more influenced by Crowley's writing (which was inspired by Gnosticism anyways) so I'd recommend the Illuminatus! trilogy and The Invisibles. While it's more of a quick read at only ten pages long, Pop Magic! (also by the author of The Invisibles) is worth reading as well.

Pretty sure our own Meta is the highest level Umineko has ever reached. and it's mostly mirrored from what we could expect from Rokkenjima Prime.

To be more specific:

1- The highest layer, Our “IRL” world:
We, the goat readers, and Ryukishi, the writer, are part of the story in a pretty not so subtle way in our own game, the same we see happening with Ikuko and the goat theorists from Rokkenjima Prime, except Ikuko is a complete asshole who never gave the full context for the readers (to be fair, one of the few things she did for a good cause in the story). We, instead, got context for everything about the story inside the story, and even the outside of the very story (not to mention extra hints, contents and the manga confirmation in the real world), which bring us to...

2- Kakeraverse, the Sea of Fragments:
This is where the metafictional concepts, alternative interpretations of real world personalities and concepts, such as Willard and Dlanor.

And of course, potentially even Ryukishi himself as Featherine, although not necessarily Ikuko, as well explained by Featherine that she isn't necessarily representative of her actual Witch self, a Writer, much like Ryukishi wouldn't quite be represented by her in the Kakeraverse, nor Willard with real world Van Dine in the eyes of this given author who created the character based on an alternative "futuristic" version of him after getting along with the times posthumously.

One could easily consider it being heavily influenced by some of the concepts of a Jungian Collective Unconscious interpretation of a sort, much like you would see in a Persona game or even Fate Stay Night to an extent. Umineko being a ridiculously more complex example of such, but my best bet would be that Japanese people just love Jung dearly. There's also Remember11, but that one is quite the more explicit alternative take. For a very similar example still not quite as deep as Umineko's own rabbit hole, see Stephen King's “The Dark Tower” (specifically, Books 6 & 7).

Regardless of that actually being relevant to the topic or not, this is the actual layer that connects our very interactions between fiction, reality, our own imaginations, concepts, theories, and even feelings towards a determined element of a particular work, as well as their impact on the story per se depending of what kind of elements are put into play for us to interfere with them in such a direct way even from our Real World perspective.

See for example, EP8's Battle of the Golden Land section, with the Rokkenjima Prime goats eating up the “Catbox” with their own theories, since, contrary to us, they have absolute no idea about which answer they should be getting from Ikuko as for the truth behind the incident, and Ikuko's own decision in that layer that brought them to drop out of interest because of her ultimate coup-out as the writer.

That would be an example on how the meta of the meta worked to create modifications on the very plot because that. In the case of the counterpart with our real world, it could be Ryukishi's personal experience in life influencing in the final product of his own creations, as he sure used those elements a lot in his visual novels and books thus far.

Higurashi characters have flashy, shiny hair colors and massive eyes. Umineko characters are drawn with softer outlines and colored with the Paint bucket tool (basically uniform colors with barely any shading). 3- Rokkenjima Prime (the “IRL” in Umineko, where the Rokkenjima Massacre took place for real)

Now, this is where things get interesting, from the perspective of the actual world inside the story. While the Kakeraverse can contain all Ryukishi’s… hell, all of the world authors’ works and their respective readers’ collective ideas and interactions surrounding said work’s not so timeless interpretations, influences and in their respective imaginary circles, Umineko’s, as well as other Ryukishi’s works and alternative interpretations of our reality, are but a fragment of that circle of his, which includes the IRL people who enter in contact with it, and naturally, the author himself.

Meaning, if this world is mirroring our own world, including the Kakeraverse in our plane of existence which connects real world and the collective unconscious, it would naturally have its own. And that’s also where things get REALLY tricky. Since Rokkenjima Prime has its own set of interactions with the imaginary inside the imaginary, and not only that, the imaginary of the imaginary of the imaginary gets played as well, from Tohya’s personal perspective, it really is not that difficult not to lose track of what the hell is going on with each scene and their proper classification in terms of meta layering.

Therefore, let’s enter inside of those later, and explain from the higher layers what was presented to us from the lowest on the get-go (ever since the perspective is given to Battler, at least).

Ryuukishi, most likely “represented” by Featherine, which is explicitly “represented” by Ikuko inside the Rokkenjima Prime layer, is writing stories from her personal perspective and interpretations about the reality that happened during the Rokkenjima Massacre, with the help of our not quite survivor Tohya, which would be Battler Ushiromiya’s identity from there on, after getting his brain damaged after his nice boat scene with Yasu in the Magic Ending of EP8.

These stories are own their own world’s perspective situated in a lower layer that mirrors the Kakeraverse especifically inside that very fragment which would be Umineko. Inside that very fragment Umineko, there isn’t any possibilities of the tragedy not happening, ever, as stated by Bernkastel in EP7. That may not be true outside the Umineko fragment in OUR kakeraverse instead, since there are other people who could interpret it in a non-canonical way in there, and that’s our reality to us. Tecnically, one could say even Rosatrice is canon to how Umineko as a work functions, but not necessarily inside what could be called the “Canon” kakera/fragment for it, which Ryukishi’s shared with us in visual novel form.

In each case, as this kakera has also this mirroring of our own kakeraverse, that means the layers in which these stories are contained into are different as well. And amazingly, as if the rabbit hole couldn’t go any further, we reach the Gameboard scenarios inside the interpretation of what Tohya’s reading within his own personal view of what those bottled stories about the Rokkenjima incident were all about (which prompted him to co-write Forgeries with Ikuko, get Eva’s Diary with the actual truth in her own perspective (EP7’s tea party would be Bernkastel interpretation of the content inside of it) at some point in time in Rokkenjima Prime before Ange’s personal investigation, which brought her to meet Ikuko).

Soooo, to make matters not that confusing, since Rokkenjima Prime has SO MUCH going for it overall:
Rokkenjima prime mirrors our real world, including its own version of the kakeraverse in which Umineko is contained as an existent work.

And, because of that bellow it, we of course have:

4- The Imaginary of Rokkenjima Prime’s own self-contained reality as a fictional work in our world (let’s just go with the Imaginary Kakeraverse):
As I detailed so much of what our Kakeraverse represents already, this will be relatively short. It’s pretty much the very same thing, except that it is contained exclusively in the fictional reality that is Rokkenjima Prime’s (Umineko’s) world.

Meaning, concepts, imaginary friend, mythos, collective unconscious of those imaginary characters towards fictional concepts of that world that mirrors our own, are all in here as well. That could include Sakutarou’s existence as a creation of one’s imagination, as well as the reflection of Kinzo in Natsuhi’s own hopeful interpretation of his figure and feelings towards her as a member of the Ushiromiya family, as shown in EP5.

This would be what represent the Rokkenjima Prime for us, in their (the people of Rokkenjima Prime) own perspective. However, there’s a catch this time around. Their own perspective doesn’t quite englobe what the very authors have as referential material for which to effectively determine what is to be considered canon for their “Umineko” or not. They are just as much of theorists as us before the conclusion of the story (and also we got answers, while their readers did not) and they don’t quite know what the real factual story is based on the Rokkenjima Massacre’s reality in their very real-world perspective, different of us, who have everything elaborated as one huge story in which these concepts are contained and properly explained.

Meaning, for each particular “Episode” (inside the Rokkenjima Prime, not the ones in our own IRL world), such as Yasu’s manuscripts and plans, as well as Ikuko and Tohya’s forgeries to an extent) we have YET ANOTHER LAYER to be aware of, that being:

6- The Meta-World/Purgatorio (Tohya’s own interpretations and perspectives while self-inserting himself in his own memories and connecting them to the Rokkenjima Prime’s “Umineko” kakeras, specifically, his own take inside even the stories he is writing or being part of with his old self).

Some may consider this as a fragment on its own inside the Rokkenjima Prime’s Kakeraverse, inside the… let’s denominate… “Witch Hunt” circle, but of course, still not canonical to what Eva’s diary (canon) has to say about the reality in which the book was based on, in her own memories and life experience of the tragedy. However, this layer is created inside each of these “Episodes” kakeras by Tohya in order to solve the puzzle behind his very own interpretation of that text, of which only he and us, readers of Umineko who can see his own perspective, can see.

Therefore, this is a layer inside the layer that represents each individual reality regarding the Bottled Manuscripts AND EVEN Ikuko’s and Tohya’s own forgeries, in Tohya’s very unique perspective as an amnesiac with memories of a person he doesn’t consider himself, and yet, was a part of this incident of which he is trying to find answers for, and he is where he confronts Beatrice as a concept of his mind, who is more than implied to be Beatrice’s posthumous existence inside Rokkenjima Prime’s kakeraverse visiting his own plane of interpretation… or maybe that’s what one who’s chosen the Magic Ending would say, a Trick person would coldly regard as his own delusional damaged mind trying to reconstruct what Beatrice should represent for him as the culprit for the incident, as well as what does she mean to him, who is she, what are her reasons, in his skeptical point-of-view, at least initially.

And the places in which he “impersonates” himself as Battler Ushiromiya, and our VERY FIRST perspective in the whole story from Episode 1 (not counting Kinzo’s prologue scene) is:

This is what our perspective in the story was mostly all about, which was solely being analyzed from Meta-Battler’s perspective from the first Tea Party onwards. Wouldn't the Meta-World and Gameboards be, to an extent, not only Tohya's interpretations and perspectives but Ange's own interpretation of the texts of what's written with what little she remembers of her family, and the hope of meeting them again? While you might consider Ange telling Battler to come home in EP4, as Battler fighting Tohya and trying to resurface, in EP7 and EP8 it serves as a way of showing Ange's reaction to the Rudolf family theory, and retrospection of the memories she has of the Ushiromiya family, which pushes her to move on and realise all the pain that Eva was shouldering.

Yes, this element for example is more or less what I intended by saying that this is a short version of a sort.

In the case of Ange's timeline of events (in my opinion, one of the trickiest part of the visual novel to understand, regarding the meta narrative), she was guided by Bernkastel, who could be considered Featherine/Ikuko's piece/cat, towards Tohya's own fragment of reasoning and especulation (the Purgatorio layer). Since I wanted to maintain a more neutral discourse for both sides, and this is one of the parts of the story that actually needs you to accept the magic side, I've decided to leave it be for that longer explanation eventually.

I'm yet to find a counterpart for a fool-proof trick interpretation of that scene which would link Ange to Tohya's own reasoning and would somehow make her meet with him in that particular purgatorio fragment without Bernkastel/Featherine's direct helping hand by the end of EP3 to the end of EP4.

I prefer not to use the manga in my explanations, and when I do, I mention it as a reference. Mostly, just not counting some goodness from the Confession, the content is all there to be found in the VN if you search hard enough.

But I don't blame anyone for not rereading such a big and complicated VN, and respect the manga as an easier "answer book" alternative.

I reread the vn before reading the manga, but that's mostly because it wasn't out at the time. but I still think the manga is more than just an easy answer for those who don't want to think. In my mind, it's more of a way to check your answers AFTER taking the time to come up with your own interpretations and theories. It also serves as a way to enjoy the story again in a new way that makes things feel fresh.

A great one at that, I agree. I think I'm just too bitter since the manga went so explicit with some things, zero subtleness. I actually really loved it and would give it a 10 easily. I just dislike how now people recommends it over the VN for being "the complete version" or something, when it isn't really the case, and it doesn't come close to being a VN alternative, and more of a complement (and only by EP7 & EP8, at that).
