Can someone recommend good apps for general nippon learning on android?

So far I can recommend:
>Kana Town, for Kana and some simple words (pay option)
>Infinite Japanese, it's a game that introduces you to some words.

I can't recommend:
>Duolingo, very aggressive adds and notifications

So far I wasn't able to really find a good workflow for a complete beginner. Many programs are probably good for intermediate learners, but if you start out from zero it's pretty hard. Especially since most apps expect you to already know katakana and some kanji. Katakana seems completely useless and I would like to get introduced to new kanji step by step. Preferably learn all the radicals first.

anki is literally like 5 minutes to setup, start with vncore to get you started, I started with rtk but I'm starting to think that was a mistake, but I feel like it helped me in my later studies, but also it's hard to tell sometimes if it's really worth that much time.. since it was 3 months of work and I don't see many of those kanji much and might forget them

My history: I watched multiple work years worth of anime with subs or even dubbed. I tried to start learning japanese a couple of times. I guess I learned Kana two times already and mostly forgot it again after having other priorities in live.

Well I'm back and guess what, I'm at 90% Kana again and now I want to learn some words. Maybe 5 words a day and I started to watch anime with furigana subs. But I'd also like some more tools to help me learn, when I'm commuting. I will have about 2h each day to learn japanese on a mobile device.

>>20169143
Thanks I will give it a try. But honestly what do you expect I find if I start googling for vncore and rtk? I expect to find a few broken sets, with broken pictures, crappy audio that can't be turned off, or is even necessary to solve the card and lots and lots of kanji I have never seen right from the start.

so youre really not from zero completely youre like everyone else that would be here you have some animes under your belt and prolly know the basics like kawaii and suggoi and you know some kanas and maybe like 1 kanji

i cant help you with your mobile device issues but i would say if u can watch anime on them i would keep doing that until u have somewhere around 10000 hours of english subbed anime watched

then youll be in a pretty good spot from there to start learning japanese

you can even start learning sooner once u instinctively feel you can actually move on to other things but id still recommend the 10000 hours

Detective conan is probably the best anime to watch RAW

Pros:
-New characters every episode which allows you get experience different personalities
-New location/setting/murder weapon every episode which means diverse vocabulary bank. (The gang goes to Skiing, the Gang goes to a hotel etc.)
-The majority of the characters are Adult speaking in Masu language, which let be honest if you are ever going to talk in japanese you are going to be using this style of speech.
-Lot of visual cues allows you understand even with low comprehension (They almost always show a recite of the murder while conan is explaining how the killer did it.).
-Stand alone episodes with almost a nonexistent plot allows you to check pick and watch whenever or do extended breaks.

Cons:
-???

This in combination with a deeply evil writing system, with "different readings" makes this language probably the most unnecessary difficult language to learn. The reason a lot in Japanese seems to be extremely strange is because there was not united Japanese language before Meiji (1868). Most people in Japan couldn't even write or had a name, because they were just peasants. After Meiji peasants got names, but the langues was still extremely different depending on were you lived.

Now after the USA dropped two bombs on glorious Nippon, Japan were forced to unify a language which was never unified. So thanks to this, Japanese has so many things which were just taped together, so the USA won't drop a third bomb.

Lots of people used Anki vanilla for a very long time and with good results. There has been nowhere near enough testing of ****'s "optimisations" at present, and it doesn't bode well that the last time he tried "optimising" Anki he got everything so wrong because he didn't understand what he was doing that he had to take his video down and apologise to everyone for fucking up their decks and wasting their time.

This guy spent ages thinking up the original "optimisations", yet within hardly any time at all of the video going up people on DJT (and probably in the YouTube comments as well) were already pointing out all the easily visible problems with it.

I'm going to stick to the tried and true settings which have been proven again and again to work. Since I'm not a sentence mining retard, I would be lucky to even save a minute, giving him the huge benefit of the doubt that his "optimisations" actually work this time.

Correct... That's basic multiplication. What's you're point?

Nah that's all bad assumptions bro. Kanji makes it easier to read in general. Reading in pure hira/kata is a nightmare. Everybody graduates Japanese highschool knowing the Joyo set + the extra name set. If there are a few words they're not sharp on they can easily figure it out. Kanji isn't as hard as you think.. You have a brain perfectly designed for it.

That's bullshit. They don't need their school life to get literate. They need their school life to learn for the university entrance exam.

If you learn the Kanji with Heisig and then learn with Textbooks and grind vocabulary with Anki, you don't even need 3 years to be as fluent in Japanese as a native Japanese daigaku student.

The biggest reason to fail Japanase is
>you just don't have enough free time to learn Japanese
>you work with the wrong Textbooks/Anki decks

Some other important things:
>school education is shit
don't try to learn Japanese in school (outside of Japan). The school system is a failure. Either your parents tech you Japanese at home or you are literally studying Japanese on a university. If your parents can't teach you Japanese and you are not learning Japanese on a university, you can only learn Japanese alone with Heisig, Textbooks, and Anki.

The biggest reason why "living in Japan" and "talking with natives" is a meme and doesn't get you anything is because most people can't even speak their native language on a decent level. If you have ever spoken with someone who is 30+ years old (and NATIVE to your native language), but has no higher education than high school, you will realize how bad they are in their native language. And this is why "socializing" is only worth your time if those people have a high education.

Thank you I get your point. But I don't really understand what you guys mean by learning a language. All I want (and many others) is being able to watch anime without subs. The basic theory behind this is, you watch RAW anime until you get it. The human brain is capable of learning that way, but unless someone is willing to grind you through it like with a toddler, it's certainly more efficient to additionally learn words by flashcards and study some grammar. Learning obscure signs will not really help me reach my goal faster, they are completely irrelevant to me. As soon as I know enough words I will be able to fill the gaps automatically and I will forget all kanji and even kana, because I won't need it anymore.

Anyways if you persist in not wanting to learn the writing system/written language I'm not sure what to tell you, you're missing out on a shitload of things and I really see no point in this day and age of not learning both the written and spoken languages if you're learning of your own volition.

RTK does build upon itself so you definitely need to learn words in the same order they are introduced pretty much all the time
Basically you give each kanji and "primitive" (more often than not radicals) a single keyword, and you use them to make up stories for other kanji that contain said symbols (for example 明 (bright) is composed of 日 (sun) and 月 (moon) so you need certain characters to be introduced before others to make your story "coherent" with the rest.

Is it worth it to do RTK if you already know 500 kanji? Probably not unless you want to achieve native-like fluency at writing in the long run

I think it's not out of the question that a heavy RTK grinder would be able to read high literature in japanese but doesn't understand spoken language. Because they basically just learn kanji and not japanese.

It might be pretty radical, but perhaps it would be better to first learn a word phonetically and then after a few years of being fluent start learning kanji. With kanji -> hiragana flash cards. Of course this is not recommended for people who mainly want to read stuff.

This is all I really ask for. I'm not sure why this seems so odd. I guess I'm at 30% understanding Kemono Friends atm. and I'm hopeful that I will understand almost 100% in about half a year. I'm not even a weeb, I'm just a huge series junky and I'm running out of native content.

i've seen a lot of anecdote that you have a false sense of your listening ability when you there is text backing it, and this has been my experience. hiragana on the back might help make more connections, but if i was in your situation with your goals i would try audio only on the front.

Btw. the .apkg files from anki seem to be an sqlite database. This is a bit of a hassle to manipulate. Does anybody know of an easy method to directly manipulate them as text, instead of using sql?

>But we gaijin pigs tend to link the kanji to our native language
Don't be fooled by RTK, only idiots do this. It's the people who want to learn facts about the language like it's some kind of trivia game instead of learn the language itself.
Nobody who knows Japanese needs to link kanji to English. If you take the time to expose yourself to kanji you'll be the same way relatively soon (6 months to a year). You'll naturally link kanji to their readings and words in Japanese because that's the obvious thing for your brain to do.
If you keep treating it like a trivia game though you are getting nowhere.

If I were going to give you some serious advice on how to improve without learning to read, just go through a grammar guide and then get on your 10000 hours of anime. Subbed is fine as long as you pay attention to the Japanese audio. Kanji is always going to be leering over you behind the curtains but you'll still probably get somewhere, hell you might even get far enough that kanji doesn't seem like such a bitch anymore.

>>20175105
No, it's still very helpful in Japanese. It allows you to guess the reading of tons of kanji with fairly high accuracy.

I mean, do you want to learn Japanese or not?

It sounds like you're using "normal humans" to mean "weebs who don't want to learn Japanese and never even looked at website that tried to explain は and が" which ok, if you're in that category no shit X hours of anime is getting you nowhere, but I assumed you were actually interested in the language.

If your brain cares and wants to know what the blow up whores in your cartoons are *actually* blabbering about then it will pay attention to the Japanese audio and learn something from it. The subs will provide your brain hints to make the Japanese more comprehensible in a much shorter scope of time than if you listened to it raw and looked everything up on google and jisho, which is why it works.

It varies a lot depending on how into my reading material I am. If I'm really into what I'm reading, I can pull of 6+ hours a day no problem (this is what I was doing at the very beginning), though it's been quite some time since I've done that. Lately I've been having bad luck and picking up boring VN after boring VN which I end up reading only a couple of hours a day at most, or sometimes not at all.

Speaking of which, I'm currently dealing with a VN that I've been basically forcing myself through up to now, and ordinarily I would drop it, but I'm virtually right at the very end so I can't bring myself to. I've just been chipping away at it bit by bit for the last few weeks and for the last few days I haven't read it at all.

I'm getting to the point where I might just drop it anyway. I got to a similar position with another VN which I wasn't really into and dropped that despite being not far from finishing it. I didn't have the willpower to read any more of it and I really feel like I don't have the willpower to read any more of this either.

kagura does a little flashback over how she got to their planet and it has her clinging to a rocket

神楽「こっち来た時も成功したアル。なんとかなるネ」
新八「ってそれ、冷たい方程式だから!」

i wonder if i just have clown subs or if this is the level of subbing that has passed since forever since the intended audience doesnt have a clue what the characters are really saying

teenagers' anime is one of the most powerful learning tools on the planet

I've been learning for a few months and I still have trouble visualizing the kana when trying to recall the reading for a word (visualizing helps because remembering the "shape" of the reading helps).

Never give up, anon.
I also learn Japanese by playing VN. I did it everyday for 5 years straight to finally pass N1. My very first VN that I played in Japanese was LB and it took me about 8 month to finish and understand the story. The very first year is the hardest part to keep your motivation up.

>> No.20178335

>>20178259
I've read LB in English but I'd really like to re-read it in Japanese at some point (along with others I've played like G-Senjou no Maou and Saya no Uta), but it's so damn long that I don't dare face it until my reading speed is a lot better.

You want to read it, right? So just read it. You can reread it later at any time.
