Is anybody else having problems with mouse-over dictionary ff add-ons? I've had 3 die on me one after another. Rikai-chan, yomi-chan and now rikairebuilt. They worked initially and I installed rebuilt last after deactivating the first two but after a few days it doesn't work anymore.

But you can also just do that.
You'll be getting new words either way. The pro for a premade deck might be that it contains a sentence with English translation so you actually have understandable context. With a bit of work you might also understand the text you're mining. So in those terms they're not that different at all. It's best that you get to reading as early as you can though, whatever way you start with.

Slice of life is fine, but when they infodump in Index S3 for example I need to stop and repeat almost every line, and sometimes I still can't make it out. The combination of uncommon words being dropped and them talking quite quickly is hard to get used to. In books and the like I can go at my own pace.

You can start by reading the guide.

You're going to have a hard time finding digitized stuff in general though because Japanese pirates like to convert ebooks to .jpg images and almost never release the original ebook itself for some reason. The 1 month deathpoint advice is good, and anki use should be limited to 30-60 minutes a day. The rest is bullshit. Exposing yourself to and testing yourself on the meaning and reading of a word with SRS programs like anki is going to help you remember it particularly if you've already been exposed to it multiple times while reading but still can't manage to make yourself remember it, end of story.
