Input theory is older than him and has been advocated by everyone and their mother as the most efficient form of language learning method for decades. This man has a complex developed by a bunch of mouth breathing third world cock suckers with an average IQ of 85 who can't learn Japanese to enjoy their shit shounen due to their complete mental decrepitude. Now Matt thinks he isn't a below average looking balding college kid that learned one(!) language over several years locked in his room, but some kind of language learning genius we should all beg and pay to get advice from. But you can also just do that.
You'll be getting new words either way. The pro for a premade deck might be that it contains a sentence with English translation so you actually have understandable context. With a bit of work you might also understand the text you're mining. So in those terms they're not that different at all. It's best that you get to reading as early as you can though, whatever way you start with.

>These are some stories for children, which you can use as you begin reading. You might also try reading some popular pieces like Ika Musume and Yotsubato! to get started.

>If you’re interested in getting some exposure and interaction with natives then you might want to look at lang-8.com. Basically you make entries in Japanese, which will get corrected by Japanese people, and then you’ll correct their entries which they write in English. You should try it out if you want to work on forming sentences and writing.

>Another approach you might is to play some popular things like Mother 2-3 and some of the Pokemon games on an emulator. Both exclusively use kana, though I do believe that on Pokemon White/Black and newer versions you have the option to use either exclusively kana or kanji. Animal Forest/Crossing also seem somewhat popular for beginners.

>Also, I would like for you to look at the Reading List in the OP, see if anything interest you, and to add to it so we can get a better and more comprehensive resource.

>If you’re looking for Japanese literature, then you might want to look at http://www.aozora.gr.jp/..

>If you’re wondering where to get Manga, LNs, etc. to download, check the Pastebin. Nyaa is always good, and Google works well as well.

Help me out with this, please. Context - they're playing daifugou and the person speaking is a foreigner who's not too aware of it.

>お金とか弱みとか賭けないよね…?

Is this really "弱み", and if it is, what does it mean here? Literal "weakness" doesn't seem to fit, so I wonder if I misread the kanji itself.

I'm kind of stuck at "We're not betting money and ???, are we...?"

Slice of life is fine, but when they infodump in Index S3 for example I need to stop and repeat almost every line, and sometimes I still can't make it out. The combination of uncommon words being dropped and them talking quite quickly is hard to get used to. In books and the like I can go at my own pace.

Copying from current guide:

>Now what do I do to actually learn Japanese?

> Look up a chart of hiragana and katakana (such as these: hiragana / katakana) and write each kana down a few times. You can practice with the kana page. Make sure that you have a firm grasp on hiragana before moving on the the next step. Katakana is also important, but it's fine to move on to the next step without having as firm of a grasp on katakana.

> Core2K/6K is the generally recommended Anki deck for beginners who want to build up a basic vocabulary before they start reading. Learn how to use it from the Anki startup guide. You should also install Yomichan (Firefox/Chrome) or Rikaichamp (Firefox) or Rikaisama (Firefox pre-57+) , which will allow you to look up words by hovering over them.

> If you wish to study kanji or radicals individually, pick one of the methods discussed above. You can do so either before starting vocab or at the same time, but you should try to finish up in a few months so you can focus on vocabulary.

* Comes with the following note:
>Also, I must mention that some people choose to not learn the kanji individually at all and choose to simply gain the knowledge through vocabulary study. If you would like, then you may choose to do that instead.

There's also this from the "Before you begin" section:
>If your goal is reading comprehension (for reading your mangos and VNs), it is very arguable that you don‘t need to be able to write. If training only recognition gets you where you want to be at a pace and with an effort you’re happy with, keep at it.

** Summary: Read Tae Kim, Genki or Japanese the Manga Way. Install Rikaisama and use it to create a mining deck with the Anki Real-Time Import Feature. Core2K (not 6K, 10K, or PLUS) is also mentioned as being useful.

You can start by reading the guide.

You're going to have a hard time finding digitized stuff in general though because Japanese pirates like to convert ebooks to .jpg images and almost never release the original ebook itself for some reason. A lot of the digitized LNs out there aren't official digitizations and instead have been created by OCR'ing scans - read these at your own risk as they're liable to contain errors and it's doubtful whether they were ever proof-read before being uploaded.

Most of your LN reading is going to be done with scans or pseudo-scans created from ebooks, with the help of KanjiTomo or Capture2Text.

it's just mindboggling how SLOW nukechan is at doing everything

why does his 45 minute anki session have to last 3 hours? why does he waffle on for 20 minutes at the start of the stream before he starts doing anything

he'd be so much better if he just made sensible use of his time, I low key think that he doesn't ever particularly care about learning Japanese, he just likes the process itself as a hobby to get away from his wife or something

of course, because he's autistic
I know it because I have mild autism and I loved going through RTK and making decks, all of that stuff is hyperattractive to autists

just give me a spreadsheet program and some data and I can fill my day with activities that will feel fulfilling (don't have to be at all in fact)

IDK, he maybe wants to have some shitty legacy among shitty Japanese learning crowd, i.e. among newcomers for whom his content is targeted - but he makes them more harm than good with it

haha hey matt here you know whats really cringe i mean besides my neckbeard receding hairline bedroom with manga and cartoons plastered all over it piss jug the fact i went to japan to live the high school dream only to eat toilet meshi and do flashcards instead my authoritative tone about things i have no idea about my wikipedia math all the material i parrot and try to pass off as my own my racist tendencies my blog from like 8 years ago where i said i wanted a japanese girlfriend that muramasa vid lmao that time i said "itchaban tsuyoee gaijeem ni nawitai" that time i said smugly that talking japanese for guyjims is just too cringe for me that time toilet head came over and i bottomed for him that time i tried to talk shit about jorge the japones from cero guy who was kindly patient with my autism that time i shit all over some kid irl about how hes learning japanese wrong and im the best and then talked about it on the internet and last but not least that time i realized i dont even like anything from japan and have no use for a language i dedicated my entire seisyun to and defined my existence by how great i was at learning it (in my mind) ?

yeah me neither

I'm not extremely successful, but I don't understand how "set a deathpoint to avoid spending time doing something you don't like" gets extrapolated into "every second of your life must be productive", particularly after I clarified the distinction between avoiding something you dislike and is unnecessary with avoiding relaxation or something.

He wouldn't possibly impact any sane person's language learning process in a positive manner. When he's part of the topic discussions pretty much never revolve around Japanese and/or japanese learning. He's an obnoxious piece of shit.

I watched his "hating on JFZ" video and it was much tamer than Matt's haters made it out to be. He genuinely winced when George talked about "not reading novels" and then Matt said something like "Really? You're going to learn kanji from someone who finds novels to hard to read because of kanji?" He wasn't calling George stupid, a liar, a money grubber, a bad person, etc.

Let's be serious here for a moment, you have to be if you want to learn Japanese.
And the higher you are on the spectrum, the better your results.
