Youmu is one of the few Touhous that is completely straight. She has to carry on her family line, after all. Plus, she has a complex personality, a rare trait among touhous. On one hand, she's young and naive, but she cares much about honor and is far from idiotic.

She's part of a package really, alone Youmu is a straight forward naive girl trained to serve her master with a strong sense of loyalty and the skills to back up her duty. With Yuyuko she becomes so much more as she has trouble following Yuyuko's seemingly flaky personality perhaps not even realising her master is actually very intelligent. She's picked on by everyone for always taking things seriously and is often troubled by Yuyuko's strange demands.

I like her, she's not my favourite in the slightest, hell I prefer her master but she has her own appeal and I appreciate her more than some others. She's not all that weak either, I mean really she collected as most of Spring on her own and put up a serious fight against the protagonist, then went on to be a playable character in several of the games. She can hold her own against most the mid-tier Youkai at the very least. Problems come with the hax characters.

Youmu is very pointedly _not_ weak. She's a stage five boss, like Sakuya and Reisen (another kickass character erroneously thought of as a pushover). She may occasionally look underwhelming because she's almost always depicted alongside Yuyuko, who outranks and overpowers her pretty tremendously - it's the same problem Ran has. But Youmu on her own is far from weak.

And from what we've seen in SSiB, she's by far the most competent (or should I say the only competent) moon rabbit.

No. Just no. Not answering the question so much as just condemning the whole route this is taking. It's one thing to point out Youmu isn't some weak human, it's another to start arguing about who out of all the poorly defined high level powers characters can kill who. At that level they ALL have instant kill powers, but they don't use them because Gensokyo doesn't work that way.

Frankly, Marisa _does_ have plot armor working in her favor. That's the only reason I can see how she could defeat stage 6 bosses with only energy blasts.

However, Reimu (and her counterpart Sanae) seem to have very few limits on what they can do, and Sakuya is ridiculously powerful by any standard. Youkai are above regular humans of course (due to immunity to non-magical injuries, etc.), but it's plain stupid to extend that to the assumption that youkai would be above ALL humans. That's simply not how things work. Three of the four main named humans in Gensokyo could wipe their asses with 90% of the named youkai.

This statement is false. Canonically, majority of youkai are WEAKER then Gensokyo humans. Youkai are just more numerous. However there are a handful out of all the youkai that are way more powerful than the typical Gensokyo human: Yukari, Yuyuko, \社命丸/, Suika, Remilia, Patchouli, etc

That's another thing where the canon sources are conflicting. Zun has a habit of saying one thing and then another. There's one book that paints the youkai as little more than pests (or the Gensokyo humans as badass demon hunters) and another that pretty much says humans don't have a shot against any youkai. It's not that they don't have a shot vs youkai. IIRC, in PMiSS Akyu simply writes that youkai are physically stronger than a human and even if they are sliced into 5 pieces they will immediately heal. But spiritual damage is lethal to them or weapons with an 'origin'.

If you can't deal spiritual damage or have a special weapon, then yes, you are fucked if you run into a youkai.

Stupid and naive are too different things. Youmu isn't stupid so much as she's too innocent and inexperience with anything outside her fields of expertise. Ask her about ghosts, gardening or swords and the chances are she can tell you anything you need to know, she's also clearly very sharp (lol) when it comes to combat.

Youmu's problem is dealing with people; she takes everything at face value and never reads between the lines. It's not surprising she looks stupid when practically every character around her talks in riddles and metaphors. Plus, she's one of the younger characters. Characters like Cirno (over 60 years old) are understandably kind of thick, but again in Cirno's defence, fairies don't need to learn most things. When you've spent over 60 years playing, it's not surprising when you aren't the sharpest tool in the box.

To be honest, people need to remember the context of victories in Touhou anyway, in most cases it comes down to 'x won against y in a danmaku duel' it doesn't outright mean that x is better then y, just that they won a duel based on throwing magical fireworks at one another enhanced by their own abilities and spiritual strength.

This means it's possible (albeit very hard) for the weakest youkai to defeat the strongest youkai. Of course, while that may be true in most cases Reimu has defeated strong characters in games pre-dating the spellcard system, but then Reimu just as hax in her own ways.

Okay this thread is all sorts of inaccurate.

Firstly, you people do realize that of all the characters in IN only Yomou can get time orbs for both direct damage AND grazing? In other words she has the properties of both youkai and human, obviously from her half-ghost status. This is game canon and thusly trumps most other sources, so when it comes to a "can she beat a youkai" argument then the answer is she IS a youkai and a fairly powerful one at that.

Secondly, Yomou is neither dumb nor naive. As a half ghost she lives a life disparate to all over beings because she is neither live nor dead, ghosts and humans find her out look on life entirely alien making her seem very odd to them. She lacks the immediacy of mortality that humans do and lacks the potential for enlightenment that ghosts do, so the priorities of her life are very different to those around her. In fact, Yama states that she must punish Yomou in PoFV because she wouldn't get a chance to pass judgment on her at any other time.

I don't know, man, I think game canon lies below other written canon sources, simply because a lot of the things in-game were done for gameplay purposes rather than expanding on the characters. However, in-game dialogue is right up there.
