Probably sacrilege around here, but I grew up playing American (NMJL) style long before I ran into Riichi as an adult. Good stuff, and the winning hands change every year. The downside? I believe it. It's usually the Charleston that throws new players off. Many years ago, an expert once said that "the Charleston was 50% of the game." That person was wrong. It's really more like %75. For any new American players looking to improve, here's a hint: you're probably fucking yourself in the Charleston and/or feeding your opponents before the hand even starts.

>>19660845
>Do you know what the good computer programs/websites for it so I can check it out?
Yeah, if you're willing to drop some dough the NMJL website has it's own subscription client for members. I think they're charging $50 a year for access these days. So you're looking at $8 for your annual card (which you'd need anyway) and another $50 to play online.

Of course, MahjongTime has American as well. I think it's still free to play over there, so that's an option. I know one of the more famous NMJL players on Youtube swears by it. Again, you'll still need your annual NMJL card (as MahjongTime updates the hands annually as per the new card) but it's quite a bit cheaper for online play.

You mean world championships? It happens, clubs send people according to their performance. Now how respectable it is is another question, Japan itself has no unified riichi league, it's like dozens of them. And Riichi ruleset besides basics is a bunch of small "on" and "off" options. It's mostly not critical, still you need to be ready to tick them off or on upon notice. Say, EMA has no kazoe yakuman which if happens stops at sanbaiman, or tenhou flips the kan dora after the kanfag's discard and not before, hey guys are we playing with open tanyao or not? - stuff like that.

You can't replace the extra flower set with the red fives. The ordering is important on those tiles, because each tile is associated with a seat similar to the winds, and if you get your seat, that's an extra point. You need a full set of Chinese tiles. But you can play a full game of Japanese with Chinese tiles, so essentially you have that backwards.

I really need to get around to that tile buying guide. I also might wind up making a new paste bin since we seem to need one and no one else seems to be stepping up.

Here are the things I need to help us:
Links to English rules. Preferably ones that are easy to print out, but not tournament related (ESA and WRC focus on tournament rules, so a lot of what you'd expect in a normal game setting gets glossed over or outright ignored), but I'll take what I can get.
Links to current and active offline games, or titles that hold up really well. Preferably fully translated. Also will accept console game names as well.
Links to any online games. I know Tenhou, Majsoul, and Sega MJ. Anything else is fine. I know about the Tenhou English extension.
Links to intermediate material. I have a link to Daina, but anything else would be good.
Anything actively tracking where Mahjong clubs are gathering
Names of Anime/Manga asides from Akagi, Ten, and Saki.
Youtube links you feel would demonstrate good play or just fun stuff.

I'm not going to include discord links on here cause I feel that's somewhat Anti-4chan in nature, but you can find me pretty easily given my name, which I'll be taking for these threads.

Hello, all.

I have started learning the rules to Japanese Mahjong today. I was watching a game being played on youtube to get a feel for the turn order, and everyone seemed to play extremely fast and I couldn't keep up without pausing.

For you experienced guys, were you also slow starting out? I feel pretty dumb right now

Until you get the hang of it stick to the single player versions, particularly the Flash game. There are a ton of rules to learn and until you get your pattern recognition higher you will be too slow even for fairly casual online play. Normal rules online are 3-5 seconds per action with a 10 second extra time bank. Don't let the speed of pros scare you, they have been doing this a long time.

>>19706703
Do it, I did and had a blast. IMO playing in person is way more fun than electronic, because the real tiles and the camaraderie add a lot to the game. From my experience, here's some advice on introducing new players to the game:

1. Be dealer and make sure you understand how to deal. Let them try after a few rounds.
2. Let them play their first several rounds without worrying about yaku, just tell them to focus on how you make chi and pon.
3. Give everyone a crib sheet for what the tiles are, but especially for all of the chinese character tiles.
4. After everyone understands the basic game, then introduce yaku and explain why you want them.

We were lucky also that a 5th friend knew how to play but chose to watch, and so he was going around and helping people understand their hands, what tiles were what, etc. Be in that position too if possible. But otherwise as long as your friends are open-minded to new things and you don't try to teach too much too fast, it should go fine. Good luck if you do go for it.

Play it here http://gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html
Tldr: make 4 triplets (sequences like 456 or same like 555, or North+North+North) and 1 pair.

When you only need one more tile to complete your last triplet (or your pair if you already have 4 triplets but no pair), that's when you can say RON (when someone discards the last tile you need) or TSUMO (when you draw the last tile you need yourself) like a badass.

And try to fulfill as many yaku as possible >>19712247 - it makes your hand worth more points when you win it.
You always need at least one yaku to win but it's only a problem if you decide to "open" your hand by stealing tiles from others. If you don't open your hand, the game will always give you the option to call riichi when you're ready to win (riichi is a yaku, and the most common one)

Very often you can get a pair of dragon tiles in your hand, then you can call PON when someone discards the third one and you get your yaku that way.
