Maria is actually a boy. "Her" real name is Will. An older Maria, who actually looks masculine, is the protagonist of the final episode. He saves everyone and slices the evil Lambdadelta in half. Rosa (with Kinzo as an accomplice) is the real culprit who killed everyone on Rokkenjima. Beatrice is a real witch, but only pretends that she committed the crimes that Rosa did. Objectively the best scene in the novel is the one in EP4 where Jessica and Shannon both hide from the culprit (Rosa) in a closet, causing Shannon's boobs to press against Jessica.

Both are fantastic books that everyone should read, don't let whatever wrong idea you have of them thanks to the movies discourage you from reading them. Both have disgusting fucking "adaptations" that somehow still work as standalone movies.

The gameplay in Rose Guns Days is quite fun, you can gain points by playing a minigame during the gunfights, and then have little trophies depending on how well you did it. Better gameplay than in Umineko by far.

Because everyone was pissed off about EP8 and 90% of the fans became haters that shit on everything Ryuukishi wrote.

Also, it doesn't really have weird mindfucks or a mystery that you can discuss for years and years, so there isn't much to talk about other than the story and characters, which are really good. But nobody fucking read it, so there is no discussion about that either.

Higanbana is pretty good too in my opinion. It has the best atmosphere out of all his works and is kind of a lolige with horror elements.

I'm not too fond of the random logic error scenes because I know how interesting the later part of the episode is and I just want them to end so we can get back to the story. They were quite creepy the first time, though.

It's like the super long delusion sex scenes in Subahibi. They drag on a bit, but they necessary to estabilish how much of a degenerate that character is.

I really like how Ryuukishi does character development backwards by trapping his characters in time loops that prevent them from developing normally.

Instead of having relatively simple characters grow and develop over time into slightly more complex characters, we have characters that appear to be simple at first until we learn more and more about their past and end up changing our impressions of them. And we can see their reactions to different scenarios that wouldn't be possible in a linear story (like seeing Battler mourning his parents and then Rudolf finding his body in a later episode). It makes the characters a lot more complex than what's normally possible.

It's a really cool way of developing characters without actually changing them into lamer versions of themselves after a redemption arc or having them be insufferable idiots at first so they can develop into better characters later on or whatever.

I don't blame you at all because everyone does it, but what you're describing as character development is character exploration. The characters themselves aren't developing, they're literally stuck in what they are. Character developing is supposed to be about how a character is originally, and how the character changes through the story. By putting them in different situations, we're exploring how they are, but they don't develop.
This is why I feel that character development is overrated. A character doesn't need to develop to be a good character, it's all about how it's written. Not every character needs to become a better person in the end, and Ryukishi handles that really well. We explore the positive and negative traits of the characters, and they don't necessarily improve and get a redemption. They may get a symbolic or fictional redemption (Act 8) but for example, Rosa ends up the same shitty person she was at the beginning of the VN.

Rosa is definitely one of the best Umineko characters but she's definitely not a good person (which is what makes her shine as a character).
The fact that the story explained why she acts like she acts doesn't justify at all the fact that she was an abusive mother towards her daughter. She wasn't just disciplining Maria, she was punishing Maria because she resented her for being born and being her burden to bear. You can understand why she feels that way and you can empathize with her, but in the end she's being a bad person.
Of course she has positive traits too. For someone who got so little screentime, she's a complex character and definitely one of my favorites. It's a pity she was barely relevant to the story.

Why is everyone stuck on Umineko as if Ryuukishi had done nothing since 2010? Higanbana, RGD, Hotarubi and Trianthology are pretty good and add some great characters, worlds, stories and concepts to the kakeraverse. They may not be 100+ hour long epics with a huge mystery to solve, but they are good and have interesting connections to the WTC series. They are a nice "expansion" of the lore.

Just learn Japanese already, it's not that hard.

As much as I like Lucia (even though I usually despise tsundere in general), her route was a bit of a mess, with the early part being a bit out of place for rewrite, but the climax of her route was kind of debatable.

On the other hand, her date was so powerful I was wondering why he couldn't make that kind of stuff before.

In general, I found her route a bit weak, but it fleshed out her characters quite well, compared to other chars, especially Chihaya.

The mystery is gone on a reread anyway, but at least you remember how excited you were the first time you read certain parts. Reading it after watching the anime robs you of that experience, so the VN ends up feeling less memorable than it should.

The anime is a collection of the shocking moments strung together with barely a fraction of the emotional investment. And the mystery is reduced to a series of random mindfucks that you can't even attempt to reason out until the answer is revealed halfway through it and comes off as an asspull that you couldn't have seen coming.

Not to mention that the average anime watcher will find out about the culprit and the answer to most of the mysteries within a week of starting the series. Not enough time to get invested in the story or even make any theories.

The whole Asahi stuff was the usual "Ryukishi flair", but the problem is that he used again an unreliable narrator perspective here, which doesn't work for rewrite compared to Umineko (Lucia's observation for the printer. And then, it immediately switches to Lucia's plight. I think, focusing on Lucia's poison and tragic mental state would have been enough (a la Tatarigoroshi or Tsumihoroboshi), but I remember reading that Key wanted him to do something very "ryukishi" like so.

But I think what bothers me the most was the final part with Koutarou being completely oblivious to what Lucia really wanted. Lucia's reaction wasn't really out of character considering the mental stress and the brainwashing. That said, the fact Koutarou never bothered explaining about why he can withstand her poison and what he is trying to do was kind of baffling. The good thing is that they didn't downplay Lucia's massacre.

I personally liked Lucia the most, and rated her route as the second best (first being Moon, then tied with Kotori).

Funnily enough, I don't think I will ever talk about her route in /vn/ considering most people there claim it is the -worst- route, for the -worst character- that nearly ruined rewrite for them. It is as if they were fine with all the crap with Earth Kagari, Shounen Shit Chihaya or Shizuru fucked up route.

Attempting to adapt the actual story into a linear series so that people can watch it without reading the VN will always result in failure. And even if it was decent, like the Higurashi anime, it would still be vastly inferior to the VN and watching it blind would just spoil a fantastic VN.

Spoilers really kill Umineko. Imagine reading the first half for the first time knowing that Kinzo is dead. It must lose all the impact and be boring as shit. Or reading EP3 knowing that it's all a ruse. You wouldn't remember the episode fondly afterwards because you would never have been tricked into thinking Beatrice has turned good.

I'm reading Umineko for the third time. Why does it hurt so much? Basic casual scenes are now scenes that hurt my heart and make me tear up. There's too much heart in everything each and every character does, it's not right. Just imagining whats going through Sayo's head causes me great pain.

I fucking love Leo as a protagonist, he's cool as hell.

But I have to wonder... Was Leo as hilariously OP as he appeared to be? The whole setup of Jeanne telling NotNatsuhi the story of Primavera seems to be an intentional decision by Ryuukishi to get away with writing some ridiculous stunts.

The fact that very few people ever die during the gunfights strikes me as the old woman trying to paint Primavera in a better light. And the whole thing about HUGE SPOILERS Leo fighting 20 dudes by himself to buy time and SURVIVING feels like an exaggeration by the old woman. She probably brought into the exaggerated "legend" that Primavera created to establish itself as the new ruler of the underworld. It's possible that there weren't that many thugs, or that they didn't have enough weapons, or that Leo had some help from other people.

I like the idea of Ryuukishi pulling the "reader" trick from Umineko once again.
