It's good to see others finding literature they enjoy. It's a neglected art nowadays, and I think it's telling that people here so readily accept literary advice. It makes me optimistic. Pale Fire is an excellent choice. I would have started with Invitation to a Beheading, but since you're already on Pale Fire, let it be known that it's Nabokov's masterpiece. You can read the preface, poem, and commentary in any order you like, and in this sense it's interactive. Nabokov had peerless prose and a just pride alongside, but it's warranted. This is from Pale Fire, and it scintillates:

It's just incredible that he could craft meticulous clockwork out of words, where all units are disctinct yet synergistic. They become the reagent above, like shards of ice thawing into a vernal river. It's truly a form of magic.

I haven't read House of Leaves, but a friend wanted me to. I might realize her suggestion if it was indeed inspired by Borges in some sense.

I love language as an art and tool and study linguistics on my own. I'm also very put off by the "English is easy/braindead/artistically bankrupt" meme when those people typically have mere fluency (and never mastery). You're correct regarding utility. Languages should be made, structurally, easier than harder. This is why I dislike languages like French that are gorged on conjugation and fickle rules. A happy ending where everyone survives would have been so cheap. The way Umineko ends is the reason why I find it so superior over Higurashi. There is no undoing death.

You're looking at it in the wrong way. Higurashi had an extremely happy ending because the whole work is about how to avoid a tragedy. Whereas Umineko is kinda the opposite, it's about how tragedy is unavoidable so you need to learn to cope and live with it. The endings reflect that aspect in both.
