This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

I'm extremely grateful to Japanese. Because of it, I was dragged out of the hole of meaningless and despair and thrown into the light of hope and targets that I must complete. I had no goal before taking Japanese and I had horrible grades, knowing that I could just work at my long running family factory. But Japanese changed everything. I decided that I wanted to go for genetics in college and go to a Japanese university. My grades and dedication have gone sky high ever since! If Japanese has changed your life like it did to mine, I'd be more than happy to know how!

I guess that's true. Learning kanji is my favorite thing, understanding the tweets of the japanese people i follow is nice. Every day i learn kanji and grammar forms on jlpt n2 lists, intending on taking it this december. It's a little early but I'm confident. At the same time, it feels like i'll never be able to speak and write in a proper way. I keep studying keep studying but i still have moments where sentence structures bug me, or i don't get what certain particles are doing. I guess this is what the many japanese people learning english feel like.

Storytime DJT. Japanese has really changed my life.

I suffered a serious personal setback a few years ago. Possibly PTSD and other things, but the most obvious symptom was terrible agoraphobia. I found I could just about go outside and do things if I constantly listened to podcasts. Basically I had to stop my mind wandering to awful things and keep it busy. The analogy I thought most apt was that it was like Speed. If I stopped thinking hard about things, my heart would stop.

This made all kinds of social life really hard. Lots of things were impossible or difficult. I was fortunate enough to have (and still have) the most understanding employers possible who are cool in so many ways.

Then I discovered Japanese language by accident sort of. I mean I knew about its existence and I had read lots of Japanese history as I am that sort of geek (I mean technical stuff like the economic implications of Shoen grants, not just Samurai battles, fun though they are).

Then I stumbled on a slice-of-life anime (New Game as it happens) via a random posting of a clip on Facebook. My nieces love anime, but I hadn't been interested in the things they liked. I'd tried them but hadn't been excited.

What was great was to discover a genre with essentially no drama in it - often zero plot. My mind wasn't strong enough to deal with anything that had long term dramatic tension in it or strong emotional components other than cuteness and humour. I couldn't watch most Western shows either.

So, I started watching lots of extremely innocuous things and picked up some Japanese words. I thought it was worth exploring and started a course in January at my local college. This escalated into a visit (in May) to Japan with 2 weeks in a language school.

By the end of all this, my agoraphobia had almost entirely gone. My head feels a much happier and safer place. I am not at all "cured" but life is so much more livable.

What seems to have happened is all that Japanese knowledge and thinking has pushed out the bad thoughts and replaced them with godan verbs, the history of the copula, counters and so on. You all know what I mean. There isn't room in my head for all that and feeling bad.

So it absolutely has changed my life.

My story is similar to yours, I think.

Actually, I just today received my first-class degree in Asia-Pacific Studies with Japanese.

I found my passion in studying Japanese language and culture. Before that, I didn't really know what I wanted, I didn't have a passion for anything, I didn't like to study. I was sad. Then one day, my mother brought home a Studio Ghibli film. That was the butterfly that started the hurricane, so to speak. I saw more of Ghibli's films, and then I started to watch anime series; I got really into it and as I watched I started to pick up words and phrases. Towards the end of high school is when I began trying to learn Japanese. I'd met friend who was into it as well (who's now working in Japan and married a lovely Japanese lady this year). At the time though, studying it at university or anything like that still didn't seem possible. It was just a hobby. At my mother's insistence I ended up going to university in my hometown, doing something I didn't want to do. I started taking French classes there as an optional and that kind of saved me, it rekindled my interest in languages, I realised I was good at them and enjoyed them. While I was turning up to other classes less and less, I was spending more and more time on my own studying Japanese. It was the first time I'd actually enjoyed studying something. I could happily do it for hours. I dropped out of that university after the first year. I tried to get onto a new course to do Japanese and was rejected everywhere; I just didn't have the qualifications. The next year, I sat and passed the JLPT at N4. That was my ticket back into university, I was accepted. Thanks to that course, I got to live and study in Nagoya from August 2016 to July 2017 - that was a dream come true. I never would have imagined a couple of years prior that I would ever get to Japan. I'd never even been on a plane before that. And now, here I am just graduated. My heart's been set for a while now on becoming a professional translator, I'll be starting a postgraduate course in translation from September.

I feel so lucky to have found Japanese, it was such coincidence that brought me to it. It's let me do so many amazing things, have such experiences. It's let me become someone my parents can be proud of.

LNs are more likely to use downright esoteric words and expect the readers to pick them up as they read them, but the bulk of their vocabulary leans on the simple side because of the relative straightforwardness of their content. Occasionally do it for a sentence that seems like you will actually use again in your life or will be memorable. Besides that keep learning and when you come back you will understand the sentence without thinking about it.

In Kokugo books they have portions where you just remember one small memorable part of a famous book or speech or whatever. It takes somewhat complicated grammar and vocabulary, and presents it in a memorable bite-size. If you try a whole book or complicated manga like that you will just waste time and get discouraged.

the more sentences you consume the better, and long voyages to search for english explanations impact your digestion of japanese nutrients

Money
Being an Ikemen
Designer crap
Being the most fluent gaijin of all time

And the size of your chin-chin will get you nowhere, you already have to be in a hot situation for anyone to even know. Good luck getting there with any decent girl.

What you actually may need:

Knowing how to be polite and do things properly.
Being able to start a conversation thats different than the last 10million dudes and nanpa shi that tried to talk to them.
How to message on line.
How to be 'attentive and considerate' for them.
How to not be embarassing to be in public with.
How to plan a decent date.
A way to meet girls. Either from your uchi, goukon, street nanpa, bars, whatever, and they all will get you different girls, and need different techniques.

Otherwise it doesn't matter what you have, you'll either end up with a low class person, getting ignored on Line, or bitter and low-esteem as hell.

Anon. Playing the 21st century dating game is dehumanizing. Imagine having to wait and hope the girl you like will give you the priviliege of getting a two word answer on a chatting service. Never this, absolutely not ever this. It's unironically ten times better to die alone. Any effort you make specifically to get girl is effort that ends up completely wasted as soon as the girl you're running after decides on a whim that she prefers someone else.
If she ever feels embarassed by me she can leave, if she doesn't find what i write her interesting, she's not worth moving an inch for, if she needs a well planned day long tour to be able to bear my presence, she's clearly not the one for me.
If simply by being one's self in the way that makes one feel comfortable and happy no girls show interest, then clearly girls aren't the route to take.
How can a relationship that's predicated on strict dependence on a stranger's whims not end in heartbreak or complete loss of interest?

looking for quick feedback over my current method of learning kanji

Going through the kanjis by JLPT groups, I already learned all of n5 ones and almost done with n4 ones. I learn the meaning and the different readings (not all of them) and try to learn a few vocab

Im thinking of stopping when finished with n3 ones and start reading more

If you're going to base yourself on the jlpt levels (valid enough), then go all the way through: Learn all the grammar, kanji, vocab for n5, and once your'e done with that, move on to 4.
sometimes i also feel like learning all the kanji up to N1 because i don't like having to look up kanji while reading, but forcing myself to overtrain on one aspect of the language that's closely tied to the others would simply end up being deleterious.
Study as if you were actually trying to pass N5, then N4 and so on

I've been looking all over but don't know how to properly word it. The に in the expression 見るに見かねる, what does it mean? i've seen Ni getting used between verbs to do somthing that looks like conjuction but probably isn't, and looking for に usage on any source of course gives the obvious responses i'm not looking for.

Nihongo ichiban has jlpt based vocab lists, but simply sitting down and learning a thousand or more words is a needlessly difficult task. I learned the vocab i learned through some sheer memorizing work but mostly by picking up words in readings, listenings and through the media i consume.

reminder that studying will help you build the ability to break down and analyze sentences to figure out what they're saying, but it wont help you feel nihongo and understand it effortlessly
only a balanced diet of native material can grant you that
