No. It was the same thing that happened to Satoshi the preious year so Mion decided to not repeat mistakes and create an alibi for K1. So, Keiichi "visited" the festival with girls becoming false witnesses. Sonozaki men moved the body. Game doesn't tell you this outright but it should have become quite clear after episodes 5 and 6.

Don't attempt to make a masterpiece on your first try. I recommend having your first project be something you will enjoy creating to make it easy on yourself as you learn the first steps. It can even be adapting a short story or major scene you've already written before. If you can pull off a small personal project, you'll know you're ready for something bigger. You'll also have to put in the effort to get people to read your VN, so don't put your expectations on having lots of people read it. Too much passion and high expectations often ends up with heartache, so do it because you enjoy it.
Ryukishi got really lucky. Part of the reason Higurashi got popular is that the free demo discs he was giving away got hacked, unlocking the full version of the first 4 episodes.

I doubt anyone's interested, but the current idea is that the story takes place in an isolated boarding school and the main character is your average MC who's seen as a delinquent by others when he's really just depressed and unmotivated. There he meets an endlessly optimistic girl who declares that she'll never let anyone suffer alone because she believes that people who were unhappy when they were young end up growing up to be bad-natured adults and in her point of view, all evil in the world is caused by adults. Together, they constantly clash in their beliefs, meet new friends and figure out the mystery (still not decided what it's gonna be) behind the school. Kinda like Higurashi meets Higanbana meets Umineko meets Corpse Party meets Harry Potter meets Danganronpa. [/spoiler]
>>19333278
Hm...Okay, I understand. I haven't written seriously in years; the only stories I have are a couple really cheesy ones about gingerbread cookies from third grade or something. I'll try and do something shorter and then maybe move onto bigger projects, Hinamizawa Bus Stop is pretty short, right? But it eventually evolved into Higurashi, so that means anything is salvageable if you really put your heart into it. I'll do it, I swear to god, I'll make something and even if it's shit I'll try and take a lesson from it.

I slightly misremembered, it was only 3 episodes.

"Around EP3, Higurashi started getting a lot of recognition online.
BT had convinced him to release a trial version with the first arc, which helped promote it.
The trial version actually had the data for the 2nd and 3rd arcs, but they were supposed to be inaccessible. As Ryukishi was eating in a ramen shop, though, he got a call from BT saying, “I have to apologize. Some evil programmer has unlocked the data in the trial version…” They’d unintentionally released everything they’d put so far for free [I couldn’t quite tell from this whether it was another evil programmer who’d hacked it, or whether BT had left it accessible himself. I think it’s the first, though].
Still, this increased the sales of the 4th arc.
This is another example of how the success of Higurashi was completely unplanned."

Honest opinion: your current concept doesn't sound too unique as the idea of having a misunderstood MC/delinquent paired up with this super cheerful girl has been explored before.

If you're really going with this concept, I'd suggest that you bring something new to the table. Either make the characters stand out, or make the plot really engaging.

But still go for it. Sometimes stories evolve as we write them, and who knows what yours might turn into.

Yeah, I pretty much took the idea from Clannad, but I'm thinking of the girl being more mature than most heroines of this type and them actually getting into fights, splitting up and then eventually becoming a couple *before* the story ends and focusing more on their relationship that way. It's not a super unique idea, but coupled with the boarding school setting, the spooky atmosphere I'm going for and the mystery, I think I'm aiming for the right direction for now. At least it's not a literal ripoff of Higurashi like my even older draft was. If anyone's interested I might post some character art or backgrounds once I get to that part, though maybe this isn't the right thread for it.

>> No.19334428

>>19334308

Honestly, you could go as far to make them a couple immediately at the start of the story. It feels like many stories way too often do this thing where the boy and the girl don't get along, but after some time learn they actually care about each other and end up together at the end of the story. It's just such an overused concept.

I think having them be a couple immediately and then exploring their relationship/dynamics would be more interesting, personally.

>> No.19334458

>>19334064
I disagree with you on the fundamental basis that any concept can be good if executed well. Sure, Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a trope, but you can still play it well, even if you play it straight.

>> No.19334486

>>19334458

It can certainly be executed well. But from the premise alone, it doesn't sound very inspired, and many people look at the summaries or premises of the game/story before checking it out. So I think the genera premise would draw a larger audience if it sounded like something more unique rather than something that has already been seen before.

But I definitely agree with your POV.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to just use her as a plot device that's constantly jerking the MC off and being a doormat, I have a more mature personality in mind for her; like how Rena's really emotional and positive, but also considerate and surprisingly smart. She's not afraid to call out Keichi out on his bullshit either.
I'd rather have them both start out as new students since writing an existing couple right off the bat sounds pretty intimidating desu.
Can't say much about in regards to the premise being boring, it's the first idea I've liked as much and I think it's simple enough for it to work out; I just have to iron out the details and figure out what I want the mystery to be. A vanilla murder mystery could work in a novel form the golden age of detective fiction, but I'm trying to come up with something with more 'oomph'.

I probably worded it terribly or perhaps it actually me aiming my own thoights wrong. I'll try to word it differently.

Sayo was born male, raised female, and lives as a female. By definition that means she is trans. However, she didnt arrive there of her own volition. Now, she doesn't feel comfortable in her body, insofaras she thinks she's female. Thats partly why experimented with being Kanon. She wasnts to be female because its what she knows and its what Battler is interested in, but she still has dysphoria even when living as the opposite sex of her birth. It's like uncertain reverse trans? If that makes sense. Her body and mind lie with one sex, her heart lies with another, but the soul of her being isn't sure of anything other than: Sayo is Sayo

>> No.19335641

>>19335300
That's not trans, she feels tortured/dysphoric because her genitals were mutilated by rocks and felt like a freak because of it, not because of outside oppression (her bullying was not gender related). The conflict isn't wanting to transition and pass (because she already passes) It was confusion on which one she was supposed to be/what could have been without the fall, and being some weird amalgamation that can't be either. Am I a girl? Am I a boy? I am inadequate as a girl because I cannot give birth, I am inadequate as a boy because I cannot make love. Furniture.
If anything it's closer to intersex. Or David Reimer.

Like they said, first time you're probably better off without the voices. For example, you're not supposed to know what gender Zepar and Furfur are, but the voices are clearly a girl for Furfur and a guy for Zepar, which ruins that ambiguity.
Another thing I can think of is how sometimes several lines of text appear quickly and suddenly in succession, but obviously it's going to be voiced at a human speed, you can't have that effect of a barrage of lines.

Lately, I've been hearing the cicada sound effect even when I'm not playing Higurashi, almost like I've left my computer on by accident or something like that. It's gotten me spooked on more than one occasion... I just hope it's not Oyashiro-sama's curse.
On a lighter note, I'm almost done with Meakashi.
>>19341396
It's just more toned down and cel-shaded, his anatomy, colouring and expressions have all improved drastically. Personally, I dig the early-2000's cheap gradient look, but Umineko's also beautiful in its simplicity letting the designs really shine through on their own.

When I first got interested in reading Higurashi and found out about these threads, I was a little skeptical on the state of the fanbase. How often do these threads get posted? Will I ever find myself alone, without anyone to talk about 7th Expansion with? But as it turns out, my expectations were subverted; we might not be the fastest thread, and we only have one thread up at a time, but that thread will always be there for us. We might not be as big of a fandom as 2hu, but I think that's also our biggest strength. While the 2hu and idol fandoms are drowning in needless spam threads and arguing, we're having naught but a pleasant conversation over tea whilst enjoying the view from the terrace of our own, secluded little Gothic mansion. I hope this peace lasts forever and ever, never to be broken! I love you, anons!

That did not feel like the case to me. The parents Ange met in the meta world for the last time were regretful and loving. However no one in the family which was in the meta world ever held any sort of grudge. It was a cherry picked and fake persona of everyone, to push Ange towards "Magic", which is basically dealing with her past instead of "Trick" which is searching for clues like a retard until the end of her life. Dealing with her past is the correct resolution, however the means it is presented by, or all the extra baggage it comes with do not sell in any sort of sensical way. Everything bad was fantasy and only the good things were real? Yeah, as if that would be ever case in a life, that's like forcibly trying to make somebody as neurotic as Yasu.

But the worst part is that she didn't even put her past behind her. She instead forgave everyone in her family, then got obsessed with her past and became a nun who writes children's stories and built an orphanage which got the same interior design as the mansion her grandpa built. Understanding is one thing but with the package of forgiveness as well. Yasu was an insecure retard, and we got to keep her identity and persona hidden out of respect to her wish. We only ever seen her projections and when we got to see herself, she was seen as a protagonist in a melodrama where everything revolved around her. Then the only time when she did not commit any murder, just put on a dress and wig and the whole island explodes she fucking kills herself, even though she finally found somebody who needed and wanted her. Does this mean the presentation and narrative are more important than the meanings they are trying to convey? Because it certainly feels so. A beautiful prose about Yasu's boring and uneventful life which made her very-very mad, until her half-brother and his wife killed everyone while Yasu herself was preparing to do the same thing, so instead of facing her regrets and sins with one person who was left alive and is ready to accompany her in her atonement she simply kills herself.

Are you 2010s neophytes ever going to have an argument against this other than "bait"? Let's repeat it again for the simpletons. Maria's voice actress tries too hard and is annoying, distracting from the experience and making you care less about her plight when a grating uguu screech stabs your brain throughout EP4. Voices in general dampen the mood of quieter scenes that are creepier or moodier in silence with only the music or sounds of wind and rain in the background. This atmosphere problem extends greatly when you turn your attention to the sprites and CG images. Pic related sums it up. This is not scary. This is a marketing tactic to try and appeal to anime only fans of Higurashi. Maria is a creepy autist, not a literal demon. This is episode fucking one, where no magic is seen and it's a standard murder mystery. The faces are not moody, they do not properly convey emotion, they exaggerate with generic "anime creepiness", and the sprites themselves look too flat and plastic. They are too "cute" and like demon maria dehumanize the characters.

>but is it okay to forgive your parents

In a sense, you can. They may have done horrible acts, but they always treated Ange with love and respect, and you cannot simply disregard that fact. Similar to what fatty said in one of the episodes, sometimes the adults have to make tough choices for their children. The choice Rudolf and Kyrie made was to save their family from financial disaster - to protect Ange's future. One may not be able to forgive them for their heinous acts against their family, but one may argue that it was done out of love. Even at the very end with Kyrie acting as if she doesn't care about Ange, it was clearly deception. She knew that her chances of surviving were low, and Eva was surely to be the victor. In such a situation she opted to make sure Eva would become sympathetic to the innocent Ange.

This is far too opinionated to be an argument. I've introduced friends to the VN who didn't enjoy them whatsoever. The reason why? They didn't enjoy the visual and audio aspect of it. They told me that they would rather read a novel which included the description of characters, environment, and events. The visuals and the sound distracted from the overall story that was being presented, according to them. This very same argument can be carried over to what you've said. Is it wrong? No, it's simply an opinion.

To reply specifically to what you said: You didn't like Maria's va; that doesn't mean others didn't. i found the contrast between her innocent uu~ and kihihihi unsettling. It clearly showed the stark difference between her two different 'selfs'. The same goes for the CG, it helps exemplify the fact how dramatically Maria's personality changes. If you think it that specific Maria CG was meant to be 'scary' you clearly intercepted it the wrong way. It's obviously demonstrating the sheer eeriness that she emanates during her mood - as the characters describe their reluctance to her attitude changes.

Nothing you said thus far has been an argument, it's all 'i don't like this! i don't like that! btw its a fact!!!'.

You can take any argument about anything and call out "opinion". In that sense, nothing has any value of argument whatsoever. I do believe these things to be correct, but the initial point made is that while we have our actual reasons, people who hate the originals or are against our reasoning nearly always just call bait or have no argument whatsoever.

The original work did not need to show silly exaggerated CGs in order to convey things like the change. It's incredibly obvious in the case of Maria in the original anyway, and to throw that face into an episode that is founded in subtlety is wildly inconsistent. Consistency is a part of good media. To say this was intended to be "representative" over horror is a huge stretch not only just outright with the content, but also given how the original worked and the context of Higurashi's anime's popularity. The voices and CGs are about as eerie as any generic piece of horror. That is to say, appealing to the lowest who can only be stimulated by in your face "horror". Subtlety and tension building absolutely do have basis in objectivity, just as cleverness in jokes or narrative are praised over immediacy or in your face "tell not show" style narratives. These more refined elements in storytelling and media are better because they require more participation by your brain in interpreting what's going on, give room in your imagination without distractions, and because they build tension in you as the viewer. Visual exaggeration is less serious in contexts meant to be serious, and voices drown out subtle scene composition in terms of audio direction.

An argument is based on facts. An opinion is not; you act as if your 'opinion' is an 'argument': that is your sin.

I do not find the CGs 'silly' as you say, I think they convey an important message to the reader. They are clearly representing the absolute (and apparent, if you actually read the VNs) insanity that Maria demonstrates. You go on to say as if to say the VN was pampered to 'lowest common denomiator' audiences, but I find that to be an inappropriate exaggeration. There is no way a serious person would approach them with that kind of thinking - they are not 'shock value' CGs. You don't see one of these CGs and scream 'aaaaaaaah!' closing your eyes in horror. It more along sounds as if you agree with my friends that you would rather it not be a VN but an actual novel. Would you rather that? Are images and sounds taking away from your experience?

Also, you act as if the seriousness of the novel is exemplified by the, dare i say, crude drawings of characters by Ryukishi07.

>I do not find the CGs 'silly' as you say, I think they convey an important message to the reader. They are clearly representing the absolute (and apparent, if you actually read the VNs) insanity that Maria demonstrates
Maria does not have "absolute insanity". She is autistic and abused. Her kihihis are only scary to the people who don't understand the imagination of a kid. She never "changes" in any way consistent with how these CGs portray her. She is not a psychopath. They turned the EP4 rage against Rosa from sad to "scary loli". The original also didn't seem to need to trick the reader into thinking that a nine year old girl in EP1 was a tweested fuckin sykopath, because it wasn't necessary. Did you only play the PS3 version? The CGs are absolutely shock value. Are you kidding me? Maria with fangs? Maria standing in an ocean of blood? Again, it is a huge stretch to say these are representative for the reasons stated above. They are inconsistent and align perfectly with other demonstrations of the trope. They were "clearly" put in there to appeal to fans of Higurashi's anime.

>It more along sounds as if you agree with my friends that you would rather it not be a VN but an actual novel. Would you rather that? Are images and sounds taking away from your experience?
Did you miss the part where I said certain audio elements are drowned out by voices, or "scene composition in terms of audio direction"?

>Also, you act as if the seriousness of the novel is exemplified by the, dare i say, crude drawings of characters by Ryukishi07.
They are a massive improvement over Higurashi's sprites. Really only the hands are a problem. I do not think they are crude at all, nor are they distracting. They are uniquely expressive, and where they actually are "weird", "creepy", or "exaggerated" it is actually consistent with the character, their context, and the scene they are included in. Their weirdness or creepiness also is done in a way that does not align with generic tropes. They do not look like generic anime characters, and thus can be taken more seriously, and when applicable, they convey humanity instead of being an anime clone.

>You're free to actually read the discussion about narrative posted in the last post

I've already addressed all of that, I'm just pointing out your most inherent flaw, which, due to obvious ignorance (its plain to see from any observer's standpoint) how terrible your entire "argument" has been. But I've overlooked that, clearly, which I hope you've noticed *though you pointing it out may prove otherwise unfortunately...

>She is autistic

Buzzwords, surely you can do better than this, my friend. Once again 'kihihihihi' is not meant to be 'scary', its meant to be 'unsettling' - I suggest you learn to differentiate between the two, it may prove life-saving at some point, we surely don't want you to go 'Ange' on us my friend. If you think those CGs are not an accurate representation that portray her, I don't know what to say. It's as if you never even read the VN. Someone is murdered and you think a 9 year old reacts with 'kihihihihi' is normal? You're out of your mind (as if it wasn't already apparent). Not to mention you acting as if those CGs are completely 'misguided', hilarious. Did you even play the game? Do you not remember Maria's 'endless' torture of her mother? You *really* don't think they were appropriate? Don't make me laugh (you did).

>Did you miss the part where I said certain audio elements are drowned out by voices, or "scene composition in terms of audio direction"?

Did you miss the point? Just kidding, its clear you did. My friends dislike the 'enhancement' from novel to visual novel, as you dislike the 'enhancement' from visual novel without VA to visual novel with VA. Or enhancement in graphics. Do you even realize your own hypocrisy? Your own sin? I think its time to reflect on your ways my friend.

>They are a massive improvement over Higurashi's sprites

I don't understand why you have such a negative reaction to meaty hands, i for one can appreciate someone who's hand can grasp an entire basketball. It's quite apparent you've never had someone grasp your entire head in the palm of their hand, I can only pity you. I certainly feel no negative feelings towards his depiction of the characters, but I certainly wouldn't say they're "breathtaking" or they "really add to the story compared to the newer additions". It's all preference, the characters being more 'similar to generic anime characters' is a hilarious apology, some people would most certainly prefer it to the original, and would take it much more seriously than Ryu's crude drawings.

You just continued to say "opinion" instead of actually thinking about narrative comparison and why certain works are accepted as classics and others are not, and others are continually dismissed with low ratings, and others continue to disappear with history. Autistic is not a buzzword, it is a likely characteristic of Maria which explains her imaginativeness and other quirks. Reading comprehension. And great job resorting to pretentiousness and joking when you don't actually have anything of substance to say. Nothing will come of this because I can only say the same things I've been saying which you obviously don't actually know how to comprehend, and you would obviously rather sit back and make stupid jokes instead of argue.

Well, I'm nearly at the end of Meakashi-hen and I have to admit, I didn't expect it to make me feel this way. Some of my theories...were surprisingly spot-on. Others not. But what really made me stop for a second and think was the part where Shion enters "the world of demons" as she said it. The moment where she talks about Rena as if she's someone far more experienced than her really struck a cord with me. At some point, I had decided that I won't be bullied anymore and that I'll do everything in my power to become like the other people, the ones I see almost every day, the ones who have fun and hang out with other people. There was a time when I thought I could also make merry with them and forget my worries, but I was just being oblivious to how out-of-place I was. I don't want to die, but I didn't feel like I was living either. Whoever "me" was, I didn't feel their presence anymore and there wasn't a demon inside of me to make use of this body either, so I filled the gaps in my existence with vague ideas about how I'd have fun someday, get in all kinds of trouble with my friends and maybe even form a relationship with someone. I even came up with a plan and had set it in motion, but even that has already started to feel empty and pointless. I guess this is more of a blogpost than anything else, but for some reason Higurashi so far has been an exception to my otherwise repetitive daily life. I can read it for almost the entire day, get invested, relate and live alongside the characters. In real life you can't get away with just seeing things through someone else's point of view and be left satisfied; it just doesn't work like it does when you're reading a novel like Higurashi. I'm not even sure what to say anymore, I've just been rambling and this post has probably already gotten too long for it to be socially acceptable...Oh well, I better end it now before it gets too long and I end up having to think of what to cut for it to fit in the character limit. I could always just not post it, but I've already become too selfish to do that. Anyways, I hope everyone here keeps reading R07's works and finds just as much purpose in them as I do. Actually, maybe you should be finding less, otherwise it'd mean you're either as desperate as me or even worse. My mind's gone blank now, I can't even end this post properly. My senses are dull and my body feels limp. But I will still spend the night reading Higurashi. Sometimes I hear the cicadas even when I'm not playing, like toilet paper that's been stuck on my shoe after going to the public toilet. "Ah, subarashi". That's a phrase I memorized from two very dear to me games that jeep reminding me of an old friend...we would've been friends for nearly a decade now if I hadn't gone and messed everything up. She'd probably like Higurashi, too.

You pretty much nailed it. People would use the same tired arguments they use when claiming the original assets are the best. It's so lame and predictable.

We can argue something that exists, like the sprites are actually better in the original than the PS3 version, we can't argue something that doesn't and will never exist like RK07 voicing characters. This is a stupid argument and you are stupid for agreeing to it.
