This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

I'm dwindling lately. I feel tired from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep, I procrastinate, I haven't read for two days and I skipped mining 20 new words for the first time in two months yesterday even though that takes like 20 minutes of skimming NHK (not easy)

I have difficulty finding compelling content because I'm not that interested in some hanahira type thing and most interesting texts have too much vocabulary to not be painful

It all depends on the words you're looking up. If you just did basic everyday vocab and transitioned to J-J it would seem like you've made it even as you mine 1000+ additional words in J-J. Then one day you decide to look up some technical jargon and you're fucked and back to looking up unknown words in the definition. There is no way to know for sure when someone has made it.

I'm an idiot who's decided to use Anki just long enough to allow me to read. I've read dozens of pages of conflicting information about this, so I have a few questions.

>Should I use Core 2k, or a different deck? For full context, I'm studying Core 2k and a deck for radicals daily
>Whichever deck(s) I use, approximately when should I stop relying on Anki as much and switch to 80-90% reading? After learning 200 kanji? 500? 1,000? Etc.
>I'm pretty bad at fully understanding all but the simplest Japanese grammar. I haven't even learned many grammar participles yet. Am I putting the cart before the horse by learning kanji via Anki first? If so, what should I study instead? Tae Kim before all else?
>Should I even bother learning the most common kunyomi reading of each one, or is it okay to just focus on learning the meaning of each word in English first, then come back to learning their readings later? I noticed that it's easy for me to remember the meaning of each kanji, but if I didn't already know the reading in advance, I really struggle to memorize it
>Tying in with the above, whenever I use Anki and only recognize the meaning of the word or its most common kunyomi reading, but not both, I hit the Again button. Am I being too hard on myself by insisting on knowing both of them before moving on? Should I only focus on knowing the meaning of the word? If so, should I be hitting Easy or hitting Good if all I can remember is the meaning, but not the reading?

Thank you for putting up with an idiot like me.

Learning Kanji individually is not the answer. Learn words. Readings will come with those words. If you learn readings words, it makes it easier to mentally accept that certain readings like せん appear fucking everywhere as you'll have the WORD internalized instead of the reading.

>挑戦
>船員
>先生
>朝鮮
>選択
>洗濯
>二千年
>宣伝
>線路

If you learn kanji readings individually, it's sort of like learning component parts of words without learning the actual words. Would be sort of like learning

>Count
>Country
>Try

And trying to base things purely on that, you'd end up confusing yourself worse trying to relate a nation with the words to attempt and to enumerate, and look like a real CUNT if you try to apply the pronunciation of "count" as it appears in "country" to any other word.

Another fine example, so Anti- as a prefix USUALLY works by negating whatever comes next. Antiparalysis, antivenom, antimicrobial, etc. However, assuming it works the same way in the word ANTIDOTE won't get you very far because it's similar, but based on entirely different shit.

Core 2k6k + Kanji Radicals for no more than an hour total. Adjust cards as needed to hit that goal. From there get some grammar going. I recommend reading a lesson from Japanese the Manga Way a day or close to that.

That should keep you busy for a little while. Once you finish Manga Way, try and start reading. From there you have to feel things out.

For fun I'd find some Japanese TV or ANN news on YouTube and test your knowledge periodically through your studies as a friendly little reminder of your improvement.

>Whichever deck(s) I use, approximately when should I stop relying on Anki as much and switch to 80-90% reading? After learning 200 kanji? 500? 1,000? Etc.
I started mining at 800 in core and after mining 500-ish words i reviewed core less
>I'm pretty bad at fully understanding all but the simplest Japanese grammar. I haven't even learned many grammar participles yet. Am I putting the cart before the horse by learning kanji via Anki first? If so, what should I study instead? Tae Kim before all else?
Read TK as fast as you can handle then start reading. Anything you don't understand can be looked up in TK or DOJG. Of course you will be looking in a dictionary a lot but its ok to not understand everything as you will gain unsderstanding through multiple encounters
>Should I even bother learning the most common kunyomi reading of each one, or is it okay to just focus on learning the meaning of each word in English first, then come back to learning their readings later? I noticed that it's easy for me to remember the meaning of each kanji, but if I didn't already know the reading in advance, I really struggle to memorize it
Just learn more words. Readings will come secondary to that and you will be able to guess readings later
>Tying in with the above, whenever I use Anki and only recognize the meaning of the word or its most common kunyomi reading, but not both, I hit the Again button. Am I being too hard on myself by insisting on knowing both of them before moving on? Should I only focus on knowing the meaning of the word? RTK in and of itself isn't shit, it's just that RTK doesn't really advance you towards ANYTHING Japanese besides being able to differentiate between a whole bunch of different characters. What you get from RTK would be great on its own, except that the very first time you go to play a game afterwards and see 戦う, 黒魔法, 作戦, and 逃げる in your battle menu you'll know ONLY what they mean and not how to read them, and you'll spend an equal amount of time looking up the reading (which will inevitably come with a definition near it)

Wait till you see the many 連's that appear in the wild that have nothing to do with "take along" which is what RTK teaches you it means. 連続 連絡 連敗 連勝 連休. After about the 3rd word, a beginner would realize that lots of words with 連 in front typically means consecutive/repeated/etc. Which is far more useful than knowing a "meaning" that has nothing whatsoever to do with the character's most common application.

連れる Exists, but there's no reason to learn that particular word/meaning/reading until you see it in the wild. You get a lot more mileage the other way, and your brain gets bigger because it's putting together real patterns and learning HOW the language works instead of how it does not.

People hate on RTK but it serves this purpose well. You have a keyword/meaning to internally refer back to for 2200 or 3000 kanji, so learning new words is made much easier. RTK teaches that kanji as "fear" and it's easier to remember dinosaur as a result.

Here's the real roadmap to success:

>Pokemon Green/Red in Japanese until you can read kana reasonably well (doesn't have to be fast, just able to read it at all with few mistakes). Pick up occasional words and put their Kanji versions on flash cards+review them, but don't expect greatness since you don't know what's grammar vs what's word yet. Critical point - read as much of the text OUT LOUD as you can to keep yourself honest. If you figure out how to distinguish verbs from the conjugated shit that follows them, you're well on your way.
>Tae kim for a bit to get some basics down during this time to get a sense for what parts of a sentence are grammar so you can learn actual words efficiently
>Listen to things, but don't kid yourself about understanding it at this point. You're here to develop a sense for how things flow and how things sound. Bonus points if you DO understand things, but you probably won't even be able to listen to Momotarou at this point.
>Once you beat red/green, read more Tae Kim and move on to NHK Easy news. Every single fresh word gets a flash card, even if it contains a Kanji you already know. IDC if you end up with a million cards where it's __力 because let's fucking face it, there's a shit ton of -ryoku's in Japanese. It'll seem like a lot for a while, but after a month or so you'll be pulling like 4 new words from every new article instead of like 20. Ignore prefecture/city names unless you just happen to remember them through context (you'll definitely know 北朝鮮 after a week just because half the articles on have something to do with it). You should notice through extension that you pick up naturally on other things that you should explicitly ignore like titles (大統領、総理大臣、労働党委員長) because those are so common that studying them is a waste of time, as you will see/be exposed to them often enough to prove that raw exposure is enough to learn anything else.
>read not only the new articles, but the ones from the last 5 days, including ones you've read already. This is natural repetition and is basically like repping flashcards but not as shitty.
>you will find that your abilities are constantly at odds. One moment you will feel vocab-limited. Another, you will feel grammar limited. That's normal. Exposure solves all problems. If you don't understand certain conditional things, don't stress about it. It's not supposed to make sense, but as your abilities rise up it will be easier to cut through the crap and focus on harder points. Particle usage seems hard now, but after you know how it's used and see/hear it often enough to know what to expect, you can't really mix the usages up. Even に will start to make sense after a while.
>Ultimately, once you start to develop a "predictive sense" for things based on lots of exposure, things get a whole lot easier and harder at the same time. Now you're aware that 95% of sentences in the news beginning with 警察。。。 will either follow shortly with によると or は。。。。。。と話しています/と言っています. So you don't even consider their existence anymore. This is how all the other grammar points will become with time.
>Listen more. Conversational things. Blogs. Film/game reviews. Unscripted is usually better. Develop a sense for the sorts of grammar-imperfect shit that happens all the time like incomplete sentence て form fragments, lazy と conditionals, and deciding at the last second you meant to add せん to that ございます for dramatic effect.

From that point, the sky is the limit.

There is nothing wrong with core itself. The problem is how people use core. They don't research the words that they study and instead memorize just the English definition. As long as you do that, then core is fine.

I would say mining better than any deck, but if you want a list of words, then core is good for a lot of situations.

When I say split into multiple cards, I mean don't try to remember one English definition to cover all the usages. for example
https://jisho.org/word/掛ける
can't be put described by one English word that is used in all the ways this word is used. I would break it into smaller cards for each usage (a single usage might depend on how the person interprets the word).

These are just my opinions though. I'm not exactly fluent. Just how I feel about the core deck.

To be fair, you can point out any extremely common verb and say the same thing. e.g. あげる おちる ひく だす とる... I'm leaving out the kanji because the meanings change depending on which one, and it's usually purposeful when someone chooses one kanji over the other. e.g. 騰げる and 上げる; 盗る and 取る; 弾く vs 引く; 掛ける and 駆ける; 落ちる and 堕ちる; and so on.

It's probably best to just slowly take in the different meanings as you get better at reading. Otherwise you might end up asking a dumb question like "why do we use かける for wearing glasses?"

That's why these same anons wouldn't recommend Tanaka Corpus for making a sentence deck with; a lot of the English translations are shoddy, and even when they're not, the Japanese sentences are sometimes unnatural if not ungrammatical.

I'm retarded but am desperate and would like assistance so I don't give up on this as I have everything else. After a year this is the extent of my progress (this deck has radicals, vocab, and kanji). This is pathetic. I am beginning to forget stuff I should know because I do not read, so I've recently started focusing on grammar more (Tae Kim) and am considering Assimil. Typically, I review and add ten new kanji or vocab a day. As I feel as though I am not making as much progress as I should, I believe I need to change my approach. The deck I am currently using is missing radicals, so I have installed another radical deck (that's in the OP). My tentative current plan is to do grammar every other day, and to learn ten new kanji and ten new vocab daily.

I am open to any suggestions. I do not want to stagnate. Please don't ignore or look down on me.

I can't tell if this is reddit but you should not be spending months and years memorizing words and shit using anki without doing any reading. You should be reading and using anki to supplement it. You're doing it completely backwards. Yes, reading is going to be really difficult at first as you struggle to discern particles from words and follow the sentence but it's the only sane way to improve. You've been doing the anki grind for a year and apparently that's gotten you nowhere so you've really got nothing to lose at this point. I fucking hate the anki meme so fucking much. It's a useful tool but dumbass redditors encourage beginners to learn contextless readings through anki or sites like wanikani, when anki is supposed to be a supplement. also your understanding will be imperfect and there will be sentences that you don't get at all even after spending a few minutes consulting a dictionary or grammar guide and thinking about it, accept it and move forward, the more time you put into reading the shit that you can figure out it the easier it will get

Incorrect. The older we get, the more we figure ourselves out. The more individuality we have. Kids and teenagers spend most of their time finding their individuality, which manifests itself in a variety of different ways. I believe the current trend is going trans or some faggy shit. Once you're older you start viewing the world from yourself rather than on others, for the first time. It's a weird feeling called responsibility. You'll know what I mean when you get there.

Hating things that can't hate you back is stupid in the first place, and I've actually watched a few anime (about 50) and I liked them, even the ones that were bad since I drop boring shit immediately. I admire matt for not being ashamed of his otaku tendencies, even if he fucking glues manga pages to his wall, but I tend to think that people who learn japanese for anime think that's all japanese culture is, which is quite ignorant.

I wish new cards, yesterday's reviews, and all other reviews could be scheduled at different times of the day. For the past several days I would do my reviews, do my new cards, review "forgotten cards" in the afternoon, then "review ahead 1 day" before bed so that I wouldn't have a lot of reviews the next morning. It would let me review what I had just learned that morning on top of what reviews would be due the next day. I would fail some cards, which would schedule them for the next day. The next day I'd only have 30-40 due reviews, and then I would do my new cards. And I liked this approach, but I think reviewing ahead 1 day for several days in a row just fucks with the algorithm and prevents you from answering "hard, good, easy", which in turn causes the reviews to pile up. I guess the only half-assed solution is to do new cards in the morning and then exit the program and wait to do reviews in the afternoon.

It doesn't make any sense to use Japanese definitions in most cases. The point of anki is to create an entry in your brain to make a word easier to remember, not to teach you the word. Going by this logic it's much more effective to use an English definition, which can usually be summed up into 1-3 words that give you a good enough idea of what something is, making your rep and card creation times faster so you can read and listen more. Here's an example:

湯沸し

湯を沸かすのに用いる(金属製の)容器。また、湯を沸かすための装置。

Why on earth would I read all that shit when I could just glance down and see "tea kettle" instead and move on? In this case I've gained nothing out of using the J-J definition and lost out on time. There are cases where it's better to use the J-J version, but I think going all monolingual is a meme.

>> No.19292404

I don't think you understand conditionals. "if X, Y" means that if the condition X is satisfied (for whatever reason) then Y would happen as a consequence. When I said "If Matt told you to jump off a bridge" not "Will Matt ask you to jump off a bridge." It doesn't matter whether or not he wants your pajon money. That wasn't what I asked. I'm saying if the condition is filled, would you jump off a bridge? I'm guessing most of you would judging how quick all of you are to throw away your study methods as soon as anybody shits on them. Don't even give it a second though about whether there is even any truth to the shot post. you just do it. That alone suggests that you would jump off a bridge. As opposed to what, learning vocab through kanji?

>> No.19293985

Japanese takes about three thousand hours to attain fluency. Between studying one hour a day for eight years (probably more due to constant decay of memory over that large span of time) or studying twelve hours a day for 250 days, is there any reason not to just go all in? Other than being an eternal dekinai of course. You're basically putting off fluency in Japanese for many years in return for learning even less efficiently.

The way core 2k is organized is not particularly useful for learning kanji and their many variations. It really just boils down to basic memorization that can be achieved more efficiently with a dedicated kanji deck. It's also not helpful that the kanji is shown first without furigana. This means that to learn them you need to first check the answer, which is really counter-intuitive. It's not an efficient way to spend your time. Using RTK, KD+ or similar decks to supplement core 2k is the only reasonable method for Anki. You're really hurting your productivity trying to learn kanji from core 2k.

Highly disagree. It prepares you a hell of a lot more than learning basic grammar and sentence structure without a decent vocab. Then you fall into the trap of wasting more than half your time trying to figure out definitions to everything in your reading material. That's why no program (that I'm aware of) teaches you grammar and sentence structure before actual vocab. That's just ass-backwards as fuck. It's much easier to know words and pick up on grammar as you go along.

Fluency is a fucking retarded term only used by newbies. Fluency is completely contextual. If you were to go to the ER, would you know what the fuck the surgeons are talking about? You aren't even fluent in your own language more often than not. Being able to talk to some random nip on the street about mundane things is not a feat, that is very simple. Learning how to talk to a Japanese programmer would be fucking hard. "Fluency" means nothing and I wish people would stop saying that.

i'll help you out
it takes too much time for the benefit
it is used to encourage studying for months without starting on actually consuming japanese
if you do it while consuming japanese it will take even longer to get through and stop wasting hours on which is also bad
many kanji are not capable of being summarized by a keyword
the idea of "getting kanji out of the way" is a lie spread by dekinai who think that only 2000 or 3000 kanji are used in japanese
there is nothing wrong with practicing recalling kanji if that is something you want to do, but do it when you have already associated them with a japanese word instead of forcing an association that need not exist

The problem is for a beginner (like me, only a few months in), simply grinding out kanji is a nearly insurmountable task. There are too many factors, and it seems like you need to approach them one piece at a time. Learning a kanji, the shape, the meaning, then the different forms, etc all at once? How else would you go about it rather than learning the English definition first?

it gets easier the more words you have become familiar with. if kanji all look the same to you then you can learn a couple hundred or learn the radicals or something, i'm only against the idea of grinding 2000+.
also read japanese and focus on learning words that you've run into 3+ times. it's far easier to recognize a word you've seen in a few places than one that you've never seen outside of anki.

I just haven't found a great way to commit them to memory yet. Core2k is shit for learning kanji. It's great for vocab but you're not gonna learn new kanji with it without a lot of struggle just due to how core2k is formatted.

KD+ is a bad meme. I haven't tried a lot of KKLC admittedly so maybe that has a better system.
