open hands can give you a clue on potential hand value. keep an eye out for Dora. if someone pursuing what you thing is an open tanyao with maybe onedora, pushing might be worth it since dealing in won't hit you too hard.

of course there's always exceptions, so keep all of the other information in mind

>> No.19219399

>>19219278
Depends on your position and hand
If you've got a good lead in first then it can be smart to just fold whenever you see calls. You're in first after all. If they tsumo or have someone else deal in, then they likely won't get ahead of you. But dealing in directly will likely allow them to overtake you, or drag you down to someone elses level.
Basically, when you're in first place the value of winning relative to the punishment of dealing in decreases.
In these situations it can be smart to not riichi, and simply go damaten. If you're in first then anything that brings the game to a close sooner is a good thing. If a series of calls makes a hand look dangerous, you can simply abort since you aren't looked in by the riichi

If you're not in first, then it can be better to push against yakuhai/tanyao calls. The value of a cheap fast yakuhai tanyao hand is less than the value of a hand with riichi plus doras or yaku. Keep in mind too that if the other plays have made calls, they have less room to defend.

If you're in 4th place, then it's usually better to push. You need to get out of fourth before the game ends. All the other players can afford to go on the defensive, but you can not

>> No.19220024

>>19219278
This topic is one of the things that is lacking in currently translated material. Basically you focus more on placement and less on expected value the later the game gets. You don't want to be third going into S4 (as 3rd won't be enough if 4th hits a hand in S4) and you really don't want to be in 4th. If you are in a good position you should generally try to move the rounds along because you want to isolate 4th place.

>> No.19220085

>>19220024
The difficulty in providing push/fold material in English is that it's such a nuanced aspect of strategy, with a ton of different factors that all affect decisions in different ways. In order to produce accurate material you need to get very specific, and that makes it harder to draw out broad rules of thumb, so the only way to get good coverage might be to translate entire books.

Your hand won't progress unless you deal the 1s and 5p.
Three 3s are in the pond.
2p in the pond so it can't be a 2,5 wait.
I would normally discard the 1s since 456 fit in more waits , best defense is an offense.
You have a possible yaku too so if you get into tenpai (for which you'll have to discard some other dangerous tiles though), you can win without riichi.
I also dislike discarding from pairs upwards in the first place. You hold 50% of that one tile in your hand so it's likely that the person is waiting for that

Start with 6s. 7s is unlikely to be matagi suji for 69s because it was discarded so early, and 36s is out. Next choice would be 4s, which is half suji plus one chance. The chance for ryanmen is the same between 4s and 1s, but 1s has the risk of a dora shanpon. 4s wouldn't be shanpon because that would mean he discarded 3s from 344s. 4s kanchan is also unlikely given that you can see three 3s and two 5s.

the hardest lesson in mahjong is being able to distinguish what was shit luck and what was your fault. obviously if you push against a dealer riichi with dangerous tiles, it's obviously on you. If someone double riichi's during your dealer turn and tsumo's two turns later with a baiman, you're just the victim of circumstances. however, players sometimes feel like luck is the cause of their woes when an adjustment to their play style or greater focus on efficiency would have made a huge difference.

newer players (and let's be honest, experienced players too) tend to whitewash themselves of their mistakes by blaming their luck. this is a hurdle that must be overcome in order to grow as a mahjong player

>but I fail to see what I'm supposed to do when my luck is bad
Watch the other players discarding and see if they just tsumogiri. Then fold. Because there is basically nothing you CAN do about luck. As much as people like to push efficiency and strategy and even call for mahjong to be a "mind sport(lol)", it's still a luck based gambling game. That's really all there is to it.

Obviously 678m and 567m is no longer an option so keeping the dora for a 456m was a slim and risky move. When b-chan called riichi and I'm still far away from any resembling winning hand besides a bunch of pairs, it's just auto defend from there until I picked another 5p pair. That's when I know my only possible chance of winning was with a ryanpaikou while tossing dangerous tiles. Tossing the 5m after getting the pair 6m was a gamble since it could have been a 234m/345m wait which I had no way of knowing. Riichi'd when he tossed the 2m which felt like a signal for a possible iipatsu tsumo but sadly missed it in one turn.
