How did touhou get so big?
Did no other game on the Japan market at the time have cute girls or what?

I'm pretty much a newfag compared to the ones from the early 2000's but maybe they became popular because of being a good competitor of doujin shooter games against the private ones.

As well as the cool dress designs that ZUN has made and the story behind each game.
And the obvious kind of "meme" on drawing the Touhou characters on your own style; since there has been artist that became popular by doing this.

Japan is the most hipster country in the world, they love to meme shitty and/or underground content as a kind of incredibly bizarre meta-humor that only they can withstand.

-Moderately difficult bullet hell
-Consistently excellent roster of girls that are clever twists on sino-japanese folklore
-Bombastic music
-Zun being A-OK with all kinds of fan content and doujins being made with inspiration from his games
-20 something games, tons of official manga, drama CDs and even a couple of good fighters. So there's a metric fuckton of content to be explored and enjoyed
That's about it, I think.
