Just finished Umineko. In my opinion, the "answer arc" are just the episodes 7 and 8. Episodes 5 and 6 does not work at all as answers.
Episodes 1-6 finishes up the whole Umineko story (Battler reaching the truth, etc), with hints about the truth (especially the episode 6, but that 2 faggot demons were annoying, though).
Episodes 7 and 8 explains shit and let you choose from magic or trick.
Bonus: no alien shit at all!

I would argue Keiichi is honestly probably more aware of that stuff than Mion. In the latter's case, it seems more like lewd jokes are just her way of unconsciously manifesting her crush on K1 while still fitting in with her established character. The most egregious instances of her actual desires would possibly be throwing K1 into female outfits all the time, but most other instances of her inner desires that we see, like in Nekogoroshi and Kira 3 (written by R07, so it should still be an accurate representation of her character), are totally pure in nature.

You could even do a Marxist reading where the Ushiromiya family are the bourgeoisie and Sayo/the servants are the proletariat. Not sure where the magic characters fit in that case.

This view has been pushed specifically by political ideologues so they can justify only teaching their political ideology and nothing else. Historically, the idea that a text is something inherently political has been disregarded by most philosophers I can think of off the top of my head.
For Plato fiction doesn't have much value, but he certainly makes the case for the possibility of philosophical insight (which could then be transmitted textually, creating a text which is not political in nature). Aristotle sees philosophy a bit more pragmatically and the role of literature as teaching and pleasing but his central term, catharsis, on which the reading of his poetics hinges is pretty hotly contested. Some people see it as a mere political/social function, but for the most part it's taken to be something more akin to simultaneous emotional and intellectual insight, a kind of religious experience of truth if you will. Kant makes the case for philosophy as pure, universal inquiry and art as an end in itself based on the analysis he arrived at in his critiques and Schoppy picks up that idea and has the art as the closest human beings can come to representing the will, again, in a way that transcends the personal and political. Nietzsche basically agrees to all of this in Birth of Tragedy, but criticizes Schoppy for his defeatist attitude of denying that art has any transformative function. For him (and this is the position I take as well), art is something which transforms our own personal perspective by tying it to the transcendental, ultimately ungraspable truth. Nietzsche would agree with you that what we consider 'academic', 'scientific', which is to say, the Socratic mode of being is inherently perspectivist and political, but again, that's not because everything is politics to him, but because he sees the true text as something poetic. Hegel might be willing to compromise on the validity of the claim that any text, poetic, philosophical or other, is a historical text and something which is informed by the context within which it was written, but guess what, that context is not something which is established politically, but politics are established as part of the absolute context (that context being the reflection of the absolute subject into itself). Even Barthes' Death of the Author argues for a reader-and authorship beyond the political.

I realize even though this is a big ol' wall of text it still only amounts to a criminally rough overview of the history of text in some of western philosophy, and that it might come across as nothing more than an appeal to authority, but I just wanted to show you that the idea that all texts are political is in no way the kind of 'common sense' you seem to be taking it to be. If you want me to elaborate on Hegel's or Nietzsche's Position I'd be happy to btw.

If you've played a VN called Subahibi you probably understand the concept.

It's possible that Ryukishi just didn't think this through too much, but I'm sure there is some vague explanation for it. There is no way he wouldn't notice such a massive plot hole after this complicated story full of foreshadowing and little details.

He may not have given us a clear explanation, but I think he left it vague on purpose. Why else would Hanyuu's personality and level of maturity (she is genuinely dumb when she's with Rika, it's not an act) change at the drop of a hat in Matsuribayashi? Would would he explicitly reveal that Hanyuu followed Ooishi for his entire life while the characters are discussing how Tomitake should spy on Takano somehow and find out if she's planning something?

It's obvious that Ryukishi was aware of this so-called plot hole long before introducing Hanyuu's character in episode 7. He still went through with it and let the audience decide how her consciousness works. It's obvious that there is some sort of double consciousness thing going on.

I don't really consider it a flaw, to be honest.

I always had that theory. In fact, when I played Subarashiki Hibi and MASSIVE SPOILERS got to THAT chapter, I remember thinking "wow, this works just like Hanyuu". I'm sure that's what you are referring to. The way Yuki's consciousness switches back and forth from the "normal" Yuki and the one who is aware of what's really going on and can speak with Tomosane. With that said, I really don't think the Hanyuu thing is a plot hole. This means that god Hanyuu DID follow Miyoko in one of the worlds, probably the last one. She can't bring Rika so far into the past, but she can do whatever she wants until June of 1983 when her weakened power allows her to insert Rika's consciousness into pure Rika's body. That's when she loses her god mode and goes back to her usual personality, memories and lack of omniscience.

This double consciousness thing is even foreshadowed with Frederica Bernkastel. Every time Rika dies, she merges with Bernkastel and literally becomes her. When she enters a new world, she mostly loses Bernkastel's jaded personality, her instant access to hundreds of years of memories and her theories about the XYZ rules. Her consciousness is altered and she can only remember things vaguely because she's now a human being with a limited brain capacity.

Same thing happens with Hanyuu when she switches between her two states of consciousness. She may know a lot of things as a god who can follow people around and even experience their entire lives by using the fragments, but she loses access to all that knowledge and wisdom when she turns into the ghost of Rika's ancestor.

Remember that the only reason Hanyuu is allowed to manifest as a childish ghost companion for Rika is that Rika is the 8th Furude female in a row. It's very possible that this is just a bullshit rule some religious douche made up, but the villagers believed it and that's what made it real. Just like god Hanyuu herself was made real because of the religion that spawned from her death. Just like the youkai in Higanbana rely on their ghost stories to keep existing.

For the most part, they're similar enough. PS3 version has a really weird change involving Rika and Hanyuu that I thought was pretty stupid, but it also wraps up the plot of the Kizuna characters, if you care about them.

Overall, it's an interesting counterpart to Matsuribayashi. I'm probably thinking about it more than Alchemist did while writing, but whereas Matsuribayashi was all about overcoming Takano's will through the power of friendship and belief, Miotsukushi takes a different stance, with Rika and Keiichi challenging Takano's will directly, Hanyuu choosing to watch over the gang instead of directly participating, and going for a less idealistic ending because of it.

Taraimawashi is overall mediocre, it's really just there as a backup arc to account for the route choices the console versions offered. It doesn't really offer anything new.
Tsukiotoshi looks like it'll go up any day now, so I'll let you form your own opinion. I personally liked it though.
I already said my thoughts on Miotsukushi, but I liked it a lot despite some inconsistencies.
I don't have too much of an opinion on the arcs that were adapted from other sources, like Onisarashi and Yoigoshi. They're different from the usual Higurashi, but I wouldn't call them bad, more like a different experience.
The parody arcs like Hajisarashi are more or less the same as their anime counterparts, but more detailed. I still enjoyed them for all the extra voiced lines anyway.
I haven't played Hou, so I can't comment on that.

I like 7th expansion stuff but I don't play other VNs are there any sites you'd recommend? so far I've gone through the steam releases for Higurashi and Umineko and I just want to give Ryukishi my money, for his products, through legitimate avenues.

I think you could buy his other works in the Mangagamer site a few years ago, but not anymore. I'm not sure.

If you want to buy the original games released in Japan, I don't know how to do it. Just pirate all his stuff and support him when you get the chance. There is no reason to wait years and years for someone to make Higanbana available again, for example.

It was fun seeing the Higurashi characters animated in todays Last Period episode, but it's a shame that only Rika had any voiced lines. The other Higu characters just kinda stood there without saying anything
