Mature retention should end up somewhere around 90% , +/- 5% is fine as well.
If it's higher than that you're either reviewing stuff you really don't need to put into Anki, or you're "cheating" by cramming cards before they're due. While that does increase your retention rate, you're also wasting a lot of time reviewing things you don't need to review yet.
If your retention for mature cards is below 80% in the long term you're doing something something wrong and should look at your learning methods. Anki will still make sure you remember things, but at the cost of a lot more reviews.

This does not apply to "young" and "learning" cards, where the retention rate can be all over the place, so don't worry about that.

It is all in kana which sort of sucks, but it makes it easier to actually read as long as you mine your cards in Kanji form.

As for the actual vocabulary... you'll be surprised at what's in there. Definitely mine Gen1/2, as the storylines are simple and not loaded with weird shit.

Yeah dude. I've memorized 8300+ sentences but I don't know the actual contents.
...but maybe we're talking about different things. None of my cards have sentence translations and they slowly build on each other introducing one new word at a time. Also, whenever possible, I use a J-J definition on the back.

Memorizing the sentence isn't really the point, it's more of being consistently exposed to natural, correct sentences and internalizing them so you aren't trying to base all your future output on what you learned from a textbook, which will just make you sound strange forever.

Example - when you hear a cool/unique phrasing in English that sounds good, you can then modify it with different words to make it useful in various situations. As a kid, you did this a LOT when you repeated things you heard on TV/from friends/teachers/your parents/books.

Seeing particles like に used in various contexts, then internalizing them over a long span, is hands-down the best way to figure it out, as opposed to mulling over Tae Kim's guide all day wondering how and when to use it.

I completely agree with you, but for this example, you get more bang out of your buck reading due to the greater variety. Having a collection of flashcards that you see over and over (even if they are in the 1000's) will help you internalize them easier and make things less painful when you're still in the beginning stages (first year or two) of learning this language.
Once you've built a solid base with sentence cards, I feel like vocabulary cards make the most sense in order to save yourself time -- especially for nouns and adjectives that have an obvious use.

You can and should do contexts, but you'll greatly accelerate the internalization process if you commit sentences to flashcards. The point is to do them and reach the point where you no longer need them, at which point you should be able to gain further knowledge purely through context.

If you skip straight from pure vocab to pure context, you're gonna have a rough time because you won't consistently see the same sentence structures to get a "feel" for how things work. Sure, you can do it, but I don't think it's worth it when the gains are so much harder to come by.

The simple fact is, language learning is a lot of "reaching certain points" where things become possible.

I think a lot of the "scary" parts of Kanji and Grammar ought to be tackled a bit after the fact, if that makes sense. It's easier to accept that 大変、大冒険、大手 all have different readings of 大 than to sit someone down and explain that 大 can be read differently beforehand. I also believe that it's easier to accept that certain grammatical things work the way they do after the fact.

I dunno man, people will do what they will. Different methods will work for different people. Our end goals are all similar.

I sure did. However, in the early and middle stages it's easier to study with structure instead of getting a lot of varied stuff thrown at you and trying to make sense of it all at once. It's sort of the next step up from relying on textbook/Tae Kim sentences, which do occur in media, but not nearly as often as you would like.

IDK though, I learned Spanish largely this way, as I got tired of sounding like a fucking gringo piecing sentences together the way teachers wanted us to. Learning common patterns took me from "has to think hard about all the sentence parts" to "has seen sentences just like this a million times and doesn't even have to think about it." One way "just works" and one way is frustrating. Then I got sick of sounding like a "smart" kid and learned (through similar methods) how to devolve my Spanish to where my Mexican co-workers didn't think I sounded like a prissy white boy with a stick shoved up my ass.

If you're not enriching your life and you're not studying, you should be studying.

If you spend your non-studying time time parroting what other people tell you to do, you won't learn Japanese.

Really, how full of yourself do you have to be to push a method, by name, designed by a scam artist? Not only that, but to insist that any method where you do lots of reading is that method, even though your method is hinged on so many other activities? It's not even original. It's a bad antimoon ripoff written one unedited blog post at a time. Read everything in its table of contents? Are you kidding me? There are hundreds of posts, and the majority of them are really long and fucking garbage. Have you ever even seen competent English-language technical writing even once in your life?

The only thing that causes people to learn Japanese is input. This is the only part of all japanese all the time that does anything for you, and it's not all japanese all the time's idea at all, all japanese all the time hardly even places any weight on it.

If you're going to go off and spread a method of learning Japanese based around preparing for reading and listening then doing lots of reading and listening, go for it. But keeping the name of a method designed by a scam artist just because it's where you learned what to do? What are you thinking? Get some perspective.

It's not worth it to directly engage in petty arguments with people from Matt's discord, it just gives them more perspective on how to counter your arguments. In fact, in general, arguing here is not worth anyone's time, unless you're some kind of idiot who thinks that it's possible to bully malicious people out of the thread, in which case more power to you till you get banned.

Just like learn Japanese.

Also, it's not so much learning kana as it is learning the word/pronunciation, and knowing kana inherently makes you know the writing in kana. Is there a time efficient way to actually make sentence flashcards? They seem like they could be a lot better than just word to word, which I mainly use for internalizing kanji readings while picking up meaning from reading in context, maybe context in my flashcards would make them a bit more enjoyable and effective. In japanese sentences with multiple verbs, only the last one is conjugated, but the conjugation applies to the whole sentence.
For example, if you wanted to construct a past tense version of the sentence, it would be
小さくて字読みづらかった, and even though only the last verb has the た, the whole sentence is past tense.
"Negative sentences" work the same way. You take a complete sentence and then negate the whole sentence by conjugating the last verb to the negative form.

I guess the answer to my question is yes. An approximation is what you give when you are not sure of the exact answer to the question. >What's your method, for lack of a better word, of remembering such a large percentage so quickly?
I spend quite some time on each new card, trying to make the memory more concrete. Simple as that.

When I was learning kanji, just like RTK said, I tried to imagine them as a 'construct' of 'images' and make stories as mnemonics. When I'm going to vocab, I say the word out loud several times, try to combine the mnemonics I have for the kanji, and if possible, I even did the verb (or the suru-nouns). Core2k has pronunciation, so that's another 'memory point'. I try to remember if I've seen the word before in non-Anki context, so I remember 真剣の奥義 because I've read ぼーぼぼ before I know actual kanji.

tl;dr spend some time with it.

I think that's not quite the point of Anki, since you're supposed to flip through it quickly? idk man

Yeah, I've been doing something similar minus the mnemonics. I was also thinking if I was spending too much time on new cards because I assume you're supposed to remember them by clicking again till you get it which doesn't work at all for me. I have had days where I've clicked again literally 10 times and not been able to remember it still. So I just write new cards down a bunch of times and then once more before bed. I've been overanalyzing how anki "should" be used but I think I'll just look at it as a tool you use however best works for you personally.

ill give you advice that will 100% make you learn japanese and it will be to others' dismay but please believe me

you need to be exposed to comprehensible verbal spoken japanese as much as possible with a video or other sight component as much as possible for some amount of time that i wont specify but for sure longer than a month

then you need to try to read starting with things that are written in the least complex way possible with a visual and audio component such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrqO4eSqRC4

you should be doing both of these things now concurrently

now you can try interacting with japanese people you dont know or posting on japanese 掲示板s using small phrases or even "memes" that you know fit or are appropriate

if you know japanese people already that will help you out then put interacting with them at the very beginning

and now you are listening and reading and even having limited やり取り with real nihonjims

just keep going until you find yourself using nihongo first in thoughts sometimes and then at that moment realize youre over the hill and are gonna roll easily to rounding out your fluency

no timetables and no flashcards and lots of exposure to material you can actually digest while conscientiously increasing the level

you will learn nihongo

Together these countries constitute Western society.[28][67][68]

Yeah, basically it tracks your mouse, scrolling movements and how much time you spend on which areas of the website and then uses that to determine how "human" you are, e.g. if you're just immediately scrolling to the bottom of the page to make a post it will probably think you're a bot.

Tried going to sleep earlier, tried going to sleep later. Tried drinking less water so I don't have to get up to piss as much. Tried doing my reviews as soon as I'm awake, tried doing them after breakfast. Tried doing them before lunch. Tried doing them after lunch and a nap. Tried doing them at night. The fucking mind haze is always there and I only know it is because of the 1/10 days where I feel fully clear and able to focus.

WHY must I suffer like this? My next step is to try taking a caffeine pill an hour before reviews but after that I'm out of ideas. I just can't get that extra 2 hours of sleep during the night that I need.

You're not going to improve at a reasonable pace if your only contact with Japanese is 30 minutes a day. That being said, if you use those 30 minutes for reading, on weekends (or whatever days off you have) read more to make up for the lack of reading the rest of the time, and listen to Japanese audio while doing other things, you might be able to make somewhat ok progress. Even then you'd have to schedule yourself well and you're going to improve at a fraction of the speed you would be if you were putting even an hour in a day. There's also the issue of, when you start out and are going through a beginner's grammar guide or what have you, you're probably going to end up fucking yourself if you only have 30 minutes a day.

Realistically speaking, the answer to your question is nonetheless "no". Pretty much no skills worth gaining are attainable with only 30 minutes a day of practice.
