I like it. Since I play lots of doujin games, I'm completely used to this sort of thing. ZUN's art is not any worse than other doujin game art and that's all Touhou is to me. I don't put it on the same level as high budget professional games like some people seem to.

I actually think ZUN is a great artist and I know I'm going to get mass replied to by people for this opinion. But he knows that he isn't actually really good at drawing and instead focuses of making each of his characters have a unique design. think about it really throughout all of the different touhou games you're almost never in doubt which 2hu is which, and that's because ZUN knows how to make them different from each other. this also extends to fanart, you can have big boobs fat Patchy or loli Patchy drawn by various people, but you're never in doubt that they were drawn to be Patchy because of her signature purple striped outfit.

Zun reminds me of one American(I think) "artist", he was mentally disabled not because Zun is disabled, but because his art style was unpolished and he was also drawing little girls.

The artist I'm referring to lived a lonely life as a janitor in some hospital. The artist was drawing them through his whole life and it was the only thing he was doing.

The worst part about ZUN's art is that it's inconsistent, even in the same game.

At its best, it's actually not bad at all (or maybe I've just grown too accustomed to it). You could look at just one portrait like pic related and say it's mostly fine. Then you look at Reimu's portrait from the same game, and... what the fuck happened to her hand?

Although, I'd even go as far to say that he continued to 'learn technical skill the wrong way' and gain the unique style he has now. Which, by technicality would even make him good in technical skill. It might sound like I'm jumping through logic hoops, but one of the endgame skills of good artist after learning anatomy is to learn to ignore natural anatomy and be creative with it. Did he ever learn to be good at anatomy? God no. But I think he had his style, he looked at it, and said 'this is fine as it is' and simply improved the 'style' that he had.

Consider that there are many, many games that come out. Touhous popularity is the combined popularity of like 30 games, not just one or two games that were well loved and ended up with anime and stuff. It's also had a bunch of official manga, side stories, and music CDs too. It's a very large franchise.

You guys are right, proof of that is that Th9 probably has the best quality art in a main game, ZUN made the drawings but someone else colored it (I think alphes), because the game had too many characters he needed external help.

Then you compare Th9 to Th10 and it goes to complete shit (probably his worst art in windows era), he is slowing recovering and getting better ever since, nothing too big considering that MoF was 11 years ago, a person wanting to grow could go from nothing to michaelangelo if trained for 11 years, ZUN doesn't care about making high quality art, he probably believes that avoiding making something laughable like zombie Reimu and deformed Satori is more than enough.
