If 1,000 hours of that was worth 3,000 hours of casual pleasure reading I'd rather just do the 3,000 hours. Whenever you wonder the meaning of any compound that isn't immediately obvious or feels odd - google it with 語源 attached
For example: 斥候　語源

It usually leads me to gogen-allguide.com
or kotobank.jp or some blog or other articles - I enjoy reading these kind of etymology snippets also they make good reading practice.

For me personally, it's more helpful after the fact. I'd be far worse if I was trying to sort out the meanings of compounds all the time instead of simply learning words and finding it interesting how they mean that later on.

This is also rather effective for learning the readings, I'd fucking KMS if I sat down and learned 1 new kanji and all its meanings/readings at once. It's far easier to see it used and accept that it is said one way in one context, and a different way in another (often for no real reason). 大事　大陸　大手　for example. Beats guessing.

I think you're falling into the trap a lot of people do when they try to start exercising, which is thinking there's some kind of magic regimen that's perfect.

The only important things to getting better at something are:

1) Do it a lot
2) Do it regularly
3) Do it right
4) Push yourself to do more

You're obviously not going to grow if you just read shit you already understand for 3000 hours, just like you wouldn't get stronger doing the same exercises with the same weights your whole life.

Flash Cards are an incredibly common study method and they don't have anything to do with the education system formally most of the time anyway, dummy. You don't make/study flash cards in class, you make them yourself outside of class.

There certainly is a specific nuance and usage to each, so usually those are not used interchangeably.

What are you even talking about? I specifically said flash cards aren't something you do IN CLASS. You learn the material, you leave, you make your flash cards and use them to study the material. I've never had a university class in any subject where flash cards were at all an official part of the class.

They're just a method for organizing your notes into an easier to study format, and they're a good way to study with other people as well. I guarantee they're common among students in any country, because I've talked to students from a bunch of other countries, including teachers/professors.

The anon in question is having trouble with recognizing handwritten kana. It's easy to imagine he'll have even more trouble with recognizing handwritten kanji, which you can find e.g. in manga. you will have absolutely no problems reading any conventional printing font in actual text if you have enough practice reading

Specifically, you should practice remembering the stroke order by writing because then you get the best idea of how shapes tend to become, in the optimal way with the least effort. It's just what it is. It enters your memory in complex ways. No matter how ridiculous the handwriting you will chance upon seeing after, if it is correct (it will be), you will recognize it knowing how things tend to become if you write things the way they're written.

Calligraphy is a different story though, they have their own rules. But most Japanese people don't know them either.
