Just try to take it easy. There's no need to super optimise your stage 1 anyways. You can even bomb on them and it's usually fine.

In fact if you're more confident in the later stages you can probably just bomb multiple times on stage 1. I did this with SA and I got the luna 1cc pretty quickly anyways, a lot faster than for example IN in which I did try to always do stage 1 really well but kept resetting because of it.

Finally Normal 1CCed SA for the first time ever! This time I survived on Okuu's last spell long enough to finally beat the game and even captured Orin's last spell and Spleen Eater (which is actually not a hard spell, it's just long enough to fuck it up). I like this 2hu because every stage is challenging, though MoF-style bombing makes it easier than it should be.
At least now I have stage 6 practice unlocked, as Okuu's spells (especially the first one) require a lot of practice.

>> No.18733943

ReimuA I guess since you don't have to constantly sit below the boss? Also ReimuA has a relatively easy Patche fight atleast on easy/normal in my opinion.

>> No.18734038

>>18733903
The best defense in touhou is offense as the faster you capture a pattern, the less time you're having to spend dodging. MarisaA deals the most damage from a distance, ReimuB ties or possibly edges her out by a small margin if you're capable of sitting close to the boss. MarisaB is a bit weaker but has a bomb which essentially lets you skip a lot of Spell Cards and ReimuA has weak homing bullets which can be nice for stage sections but not so much for bosses and her noticeably weaker damage often forces you to dodge extra waves of boss patterns.

>> No.18734058

>> No.18735112

>>18733747
I died twice to meister on that run, but I honestly think it's one of the easier hard patterns, and definitely the most fun one, it just takes a huge amount of practice to get down to a consistent level. My favorite spell in maingame.

Bomb whenever there's a pattern that looks threatening and you don't expect to survive it. Being liberal with your bomb usage will help get you into the habit of using them and as you get better at the game, you won't need to rely on them as much so you'll be able to conserve them for moments when you are actually capable of recognizing when you're going to die to something.

after playing HSIFS more, sure Marisa is the best shot for survival but I'm tempted to move Cirno in front of Reimu for 2nd.

Cirno is the 2nd best Winter after Marisa, because she can keep firing when she bombs which means she doesn't lose stacked lasers. And her bomb has the most damage potential due to shotgun.

Touhou is the kind of game you need to be calm to play, but that in addition to my hands twitching (not a nervousness problem, my hands are eternally like this) and having no tolerance for failure just does not make for a good experience. I like to look at it the other way arround. The game teaches you to keep calm and to tolerate failure. It shows you that this is the best way, so you have motivation to learn. I have a condition that I like to call "half of ADHD" and I manage to get better and better, so why wouldn't you be able to.
Statistically speaking, after every unusualy good performance there will come either average or unusually bad one, there is no going arround it, it doesn't depend on you. What is important is the general trend, are you better now than you were a week, two, month ago? Small losses are to be overlooked. Patience rewards in the long run.

I suppose you're right, when I look at how many hours I've actually spent playing, it's only been a few days or so. In that span of time I have seen an improvement in how I think and act, most of my fuck ups come from either not knowing the pattern well enough or just personal mistakes, which are probably what pisses me off the most, however if I can look past that like you said then maybe things aren't so bad.
Thanks anon, between here and Touhou, all this that I'm learning is starting to really change my outlook on things

Playing reimuAutism breeds nothing but autism and regret and is harder in almost all facets of eosd. I can't envision a single thing she does better than the other shot types in normal, besides having a bomb that deals enough damage to end a pattern along with a shotgun (which is major I guess but just use MarisaBitch so you don't look completely retarded.), better power collection by a couple seconds in stage 2 and having a relatively ok patchy. Everything else about reimuA is far below that of the other shot types, with the exception of MarisaA, in where I can't say much about normal because I've never played her on normal, but who has a much harder patchy on lunatic. Be the wise man now and either use ReimuB or MarisaB as they have better power, have decent patchys, and in the case of MarisaBitch, has a much better bomb. also so you don't look retarded

MarisaB and ReimuAwful is universally regarded as having the easier patchy's (unless you're being a retarded troll), but test and look to see for yourself. But I advise using MarisaB or ReimuB due to their overall power, the slight help in patchy using ReimuAutism is outclassed by the other shot types in the stage 3 fairies, sakuya and remi performance. >> No.18816507

Your Stage 4 route is a bit strange in certain parts. All of three-pronged stuff is aimed and can be streamed easily, so the first half of the stage shouldn't give you any issue. Also, with the section where they come out in lines around the screen, you can have a route that takes care of them all while moving around the bullets, where instead you just crawl up the side. Ultimately you only use one life and bomb though so it isn't that bad? You mostly just shit the bed on bosses. Like comparatively your midboss Meiling death cost you the same.

I recommend trying to dodge vertically more on certain patterns like Meiling's last two cards, because dodging vertically can let you evade the bullets while also keeping you in line with the boss. More generally, hugging the very bottom is something you'll eventually have to stop doing because it limits the directions you can dodge in. This is largely why you get stuck on Patchouli's cards.

Also, runs can be quite tedious in the beginning, but not thinking about the start and not taking it seriously (enough to not die carelessly) makes it seemingly go by faster for me. I like to think that my runs actually "start" on stage 4, and take it a bit more seriously onwards.

It took me longer than I care to admit to get this clear. Mostly because I just never play the game. PC98 feels so RNG at times, like I just don't feel like I can dodge things, but once I got used to it it's actually kind of fun.

I did no-bomb categories like normal, hard, lunatic (don't psych yourself out, goes for stuff in general), extra, as well as extra-boss no-miss no bombs. No focus is supposedly good for control of your character as well, but I haven't bothered.

Playing for score is quite something, so you will likely need someone to help you with the tricks. It's incredibly difficult to copy paste score strats as opposed from copy-pasting from a multitude of survival replays from my view, though I admittedly haven't even done score runs yet.

You do it for quick power so you can get to full faster which lets you accumulate the power item value and POC faster I guess, but this has no real place in a survival run since it really just wastes a bomb.

random sa stuff learned this weekend (probably old news):
--r-c has invincibility frames when transitioning from unfocused speed to aya speed.
--dying to yamame's hitbox after her last spell ends causes the game to crash.
--kisume's huge bullets from her spell will not be cleared if they spawn right as she dies. i assume that this and the previous bullet apply to all bosses and to mof/ufo as well (same engine), but i'd rather not test to find out.

IN, it has the most content of any touhou game, a constistently amazing soundtrack, alot of playable characters, two stage 4s, two stage 6s, and my favorite part about it is the scoring system, since ZUN actually cared about his games back then. It has tons of intended grazes, time is always important where in newer games going for more piv becomes worthless late game, and the familiar cancels are great. another sa discovery (probably more old news): a bomb used during the first second of a spell won't damage the boss or count as failing the spell (just like a bomb used toward the end of the previous spell/non). a second bomb will work as normal and will count as failing the spell. bombs always work on nons even if they were used during the previous spell/non.

makes sense: it allows the player to capture a spell despite bombing a split-second after the previous attack ended, which is fair since bullets aren't immediately cleared (and would be nice regardless since reactions aren't instantaneous). wouldn't have guessed that the window would be a full second, though.
