18654357 No.18654357 [Reply] [Original]

I am a depressed salaryman working in Tokyo. I have come to the realization that I really really fucking hate my job.

The other day I saw someone post a patreon of some guy who makes like 5k usd a month from translating untranslated hentai. I would like to start doing this (fluent in nip and English already.)

How would I go about getting a following? Is there a certain blog type that is best suited to releasing hentai translations? Also, how do I know what is in "high demand" for translations that would help me get a fanbase?

I haven't really downloaded anime or manga since my high school 8 years ago, but Is TokyoTosho still a good resource for Raws?

I understand this and am prepared to learn how to properly edit text translations and make it look nice. I have basic skills with photoshop so I think if I read around online I should be able to find some tutorials to help me with this.

I am not worried about the "worthiness" of my translations at all. I spend my entire day speaking, writing, and reading complex Japanese with my coworkers and clients so I do not think I will run into any issues making awkward translations.

I am just not sure of what kind of blogs people usually go to for their translated hentai/how I should go about getting established.

VNs sound like they could be lucrative - it's a lot of text after all, and the demand is there in the west. But also seems like it would be hard to market yourself to a company for that.

I have also considered this but feel like this has more potential for landing me in a legal quagmire. If I translate and distribute some VN I fear that I would be sued or presented with a C&D. I'd start by putting out a couple high quality translations on exhentai and other places to let people know who you are and put it out there that you do commissions, then go from there. Get into more communities and such. Probably going to take a couple years before you can make a living off it.

I'd also recommend doing doujin/parody works for building word of mouth as there's no risk of them getting C&D'd so they'll be up everywhere forever. Some H magazines are getting licensed in English, I'd avoid those unless you get a commission for one. With a commission you don't have to worry about rights since you just send it to whoever bought it and then they share it or not.

Check with the other guys doing it to get an idea for commission rates.

>> No.18654977

Do a bunch of free work. As self serving as this is, it's probably the best way to get your name out there.

You could try looking for interesting stuff tagged translation_request on danbooru. This has the advantage of not needing any image editing work, just the built-in notes system.

http://danbooru.donmai.us/posts?tags=translation_request

It's mostly standalone images but there are comics in there too.

The best place would probably be to go on https://e-hentai.org/.. They have forums where you can announce yourself, there are translation requests, and there's a bounty system where people offer fake money for translations. You'll never get real money out of a bounty, but again: no editing. The bounty poster will almost certainly take care of that.

There are people talking offering paid commisions on the forums too. But I would highly recommend getting some free work out there so people can see what you're offering. You might be able to find an editor to take care of that stuff for you on the forums too.

There's also a few companies that deal with porn, but I have no idea if they're hiring, or what you need to do to get hired there.

But no matter what, I wouldn't expect to start raking in the dough. Translating isn't very lucrative work unless you live in a country with a very low cost of living. And I'm pretty sure Tokyo is very much the opposite.

Are you familiar with the various parts of scanlations? You're going to burn yourself out if you try to do every role by yourself, not to mention how being translator/redraw/typesetter/etc all at once adds multiple chokepoints that are way easier to solve with just having someone else do the other things.
I don't think hentai does the kind of fucking insanity in pic related, but if you do end up getting big, learning the other roles would become irrelevant anyway.

Assuming you get raws that aren't scanned by a butt photocopier, redrawing is mostly fixing art covered by non-bubbled text and two-page spreads.
For typesetting, there's a lot of ways to curve or warp text (that image being text on a spiral-shaped path), and also various tricks to fit long words and otherwise make it resemble the original, despite being in a language that follows different conventions.
I can't think of a single one-man scan team that has consistent long-lasting output.

>You're going to burn yourself out if you try to do every role by yourself, not to mention how being translator/redraw/typesetter/etc
You're vastly overestimating the kind of work required to white out a few bubbles or overlay some text with a shadow.

Sure, if you wanted to put out professional quality shit with every sliver of Japanese removed and translated, it'd be a lot of work. But 99.99% of people don't give a fuck if you ignore dumb shit like that. You can pump out a 22p doujin in an hour, no problem, all you have to do is work smart, not hard.
