Japanese are culturally Shinto irrespective of Buddhism. They are registered and blessed from birth to all major parts of their life and even if they don't know it, a lot of their thinking and attitude has a shinto basis. Its not really a competition, but another way of putting is some Japanese are Buddhist, and all of them are Shinto.

Its also why its stupid for non-Japs to be shinto because as a folk religion, its tied to their own land and heritage.

Religious Buddhists are the hardline Christians of Japan. Its considered weird to be so religiously obsessed and most Japs perform only shinto functions on a yearly basis, including festivals. Shinto is taken for granted and does not need to distinguish itself anymore than water needs to distinguish itself among fish.

Buddhism is the "other" supplemental thing that they do when they need to bring active religious fever to a new level, that they can't really do with shinto since its most a way of life.

Its hard to see shinto in the context of Japan because westerners we have a completely different relationship with religion due to our history with battling and exclusive sects if monotheism and our native religions were seen as a direct threat and extinguished or co-opted as much as possible.

Sure, so are a lot of Zoroastrian customs, festivals, holidays, religious ceremonies, and so that are intermarried both into Shia Islam as well as independent of it. Not really that different from how Buddhism is dominant in Japan but Shinto practices and customs still exist despite its active practitioners being a tiny minority comparatively speaking.
