Seriously, what is going on? All games I had today, I got shitty hands while my opponents got 2-3 shanten. Especially when I'm dealer I had to deal with 3-6th turn riichis.
Last game was kinda ridiculous with only 4 games, 2 haneman (1 tsumo, 1 ron), 1mangan I dealt into (I was in tenpai for a 1p but could've finished the hand if I decided for a 3p wait) and she finished it with this

Every player has a seat wind. For that player, the wind that matches their seat is worth yakuhai for them and them only (one exception below). So a player sitting west gets yakuhai for a west wind triplet (or quad), while other seats wouldn't. Similarly, that same player wouldn't get value from a north wind triplet.

In addition to this, there's also a concurrent round wind that is worth yakuhai to everyone. East in the east round, south in the south round. In the case of the dealer (east) in the east round, his double up, so a dealer in the east round with a triplet or more of the east wind gets two yakuhai for the one triplet (called dabuton, lit. double east). The south player in the south round has the same thing (dabunan, double south).

Whether a tile is worth yakuhai or not is also valuable knowledge in regards to forming the pair. Pinfu requires that all tile groupings be sequences, that it is waiting on two sides when tenpai, and lastly, that the pair utilized is not yakuhai (or, more specifically, that it does not grant the hand any additional Fu. This is essentially the same thing though, as the only tiles that can grant Fu while being utilized as a pair are yakuhai tiles.) So, following this, a player sitting west could not use the west or east (south in the south round) wind tiles as a pair for a valid Pinfu hand, but he could use the north and south (east in the south round) wind tiles.

I only had time to view e1, which you won, but I did want to bring something to your attention:

when you chose a single wait tile, make sure you have some camouflage. you tossed the 4m to wait on the 5m. I would never toss you that tile on the basis of the ura-suji (never deal in suji tiles of the tiles right next to the riichi indicator).

tossing 5m would have made more sense as there was plenty of 1m and 7m camouflaging your wait. you lucked out in the end but know that a better player would have avoided dealing that tile.

Besides your shitty riichi hands on the kanchan/tanki waits (which you both won so whatever), there's not much I saw you doing wrong.

These are from a beginner mahjong set sold in Japan as "Master Mahjong." I liked the layout of the Yaku list and the fact that the very same list, the scoring tables, and a summation of the scoring rules fit on one sheet of paper that could be folded into a small pamphlet. I thought you guys might like this too, so I scanned them, and also made an English version. All of the Yaku names are just romanized Japanese, because I mainly intended it for here, and I see the Japanese names for yaku more often than anything else, but I also have saved the project files (pdn for paint.net) which have all the text on a second layer that can be edited should you wish to make one to your taste.

The attached image is actually a lower-quality version of the original scan (the original was too big to post on 4chan). I have the original scans and English versions hosted here.
https://ryanpeikou.neocities.org/mastermahjong.html

There's also an introductory booklet which I would like to scan eventually.

Do you lay traps for your waits? Suji traps, purposely making non efficient early discards (eg you have two 7s at the beginning, you discard one on your first turn and later wait with 7-9, or 78), that kind of thing.

I don't do that much but I wonder if that'd be a good idea to sacrifice efficiency like that in some situations.

Horizontal tile in the pool (and 1000 points stick next to it): Calling riichi.

Horizontal tile in the Pon/Chi: indicates the neighbor you stole it from. When the horizontal tile is at the left, it's your left neighbor, at the middle: the guy in front of you, at the right: the guy at your right.

By the way, the same applies to Kan. Pic related is a closed Kan (you had the 4 tiles in your hand before calling Kan), but when you're completing a Kan from another person's discard, or promoting a Pon to a Kan (you've drawn the fourth tile after ponning), you have to put the tile horizontally accordingly.

Any match, really. You might feel the game is very one-sided, but it's not rare that you are the primary cause of the game being one-sided. Poor keep/discard decision, fail at reading waits, mistiming of attacking/defending, etc.
However, keep in mind that even if a Tenhoui gives review to your game, there are cases where the choices are very debatable. Since obviously we're talking about past game, what you'll get from game review may not be applicable, but in general, you can discern which part you're lacking at the time being.

The most effective ones are those where you get ronned a lot because the feedback is something you can very easily take away and apply in your next game.
However, like the other anon said, feel free to post any game. Those where nothing happens could be due to a lack of efficiency or poor wait decisions which is still room for you to improve.

unless you notice a player that rapidly tsumogiri's all their draws (toss the tile they just drew) you shouldn't worry about damaten. Damaten happens but is typically used by players in the lead that value pushing the game ahead over higher scoring hands.

There are always exceptions of course, but stay in the realm of the honest most likely outcome

Be extremely suspicious of any open hands with two or more calls. those are quite often in tenpai and should be defended against unless you have compelling reasons not to do so.

>> No.18407871

In terms of points, and in general it is a good hand, but I think, that in mahjong the context of the hand is also important. To me a fast and cheap hand leading in east 4 that I can also defend with if needed is a good hand. At that time, I would rather have that kind of hand than a possible baiman that would be slower. But if I was 4th player, I would want the baiman.

Learn to defend, learn when to go fast or slow or to fold, try to notice what yaku other people might be going for, try to guess what tiles they could be hogging (and that you won't be able to draw), you can expect most of the honors to be thrown in the pond but the 2345678 will be usually kept in people's hands

Basically learn when to push or fold to maximize your efficiency while limiting the risks. Look at what people in riichi discarded to get an idea of the safe and dangerous zones to discard and check whether you were right or not at the end. If someone discarded 9 and 7p at the beginning of the game and called riichi later, then there's a relatively good chance the 8 is safe. If someone discarded an 8p and called riichi right after, then it's the opposite, every tile around the 8p would be dangerous (because the guy might have kept 788p in his hand, drawn another pair, and discarded the 8 to call riichi)

I'm playing http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html , and I can Pon and make sequences and groups that get moved to the side and shown, but I notice most games that I'm the only player that does that, and the computer players often keep their hands closed until the end. I don't understand how I'm supposed to try and build my hand and keep it closed until I'm one tile away from a winning hand so I can Riichi, because every time I complete a trio of tiles they're automatically flipped. Calling Pon/Chi opens your hand. Opening your hand helps you going faster but makes the hand worth less points and you might not be able to win at all with an opened hand.

To be able to win with your hand, it needs to fulfill at least one of pic related requirements (yaku). When your hand stays closed, it's easy: drawing your winning tile with a closed hand is a yaku called menzen tsumo. If you want to win by ron, a closed hand can call riichi when it's one tile away from winning, which is also a yaku.
If you open your hand with Pon/Chi, then you have to make sure you complete at least one yaku. The easiest are yakuhai (having a triplet of dragons, or having a triplet of your seat/the round wind) and tanyao (no honors/terminals : only 2345678).

Of course yaku stack up and give your hand more points (han), so say you have a closed hand with yakuhai, that you call riichi and draw your winning tile to win by tsumo, it'll be worth 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 han.

Keep the yaku list with you when you play so you can memorize them little by little.

There's not much chance you'll be tokujou standard by then but you still might be able to hold your own if you practice and study enough. Make sure to get used to playing with real tiles; as the other anon said, you don't want to annoy everyone else by spending half the game knocking tiles over and fumbling around. You'll also need to get decent at scoring and be able to at least figure out fu and han values quickly if you want to play in a parlour.
