Guys two questions:

How are you supposed to guess umineko's culprit? All the episodes have a different one. All you can guess is that Beatrice is not the culprit right? I wouldn't see how you could guess that it's Kyrie and Rudolph before the reveal

and another regarding Higurashi
Can anyone give me a proper reason why Rika didnt send Hanyuu after Takano/Tomitake at the night of the festival just to see who kills them since she assumed that is her killer aswell? I feel this is a huge mistake in higurashi but maybe you guys can give me a reason?

Figuring out Rokkenjima Prime killers doesn't really matters, what truly matters is figuring out who's the mastermind behind the beginning of every Rokkenjima incident, meaning Beatrice, meaning Yasu, meaning Shannon and Kanon.

I don't know about Higurashi, it's been too long.
Maybe Tomitake and Takano's private time is too lewd of a sight for Hanyuu.

All Episodes can be explained having Yasu as the culprit (even before the manga came with explicity).

EP4 is mirroring EP7 in Battler's perspective,so you could say, it could be the only one without having much of the culprit being Yasu per se (it was more caused by the adults, Rudolph and Kyrie particularly), besides the possibilities being so open to anything at all, including Yasu anyway.

The most difficult one was EP5 I guess, since there's a different whydunnit and detective perspective entirely (which was also one huge narrative trap during the whole thing).

>> No.18118018

>>18117769
The original port is unplayable in my opinion (the mangagamer first release).
The steam version sadly works though but the translation is a bit worse than the fixed one of the original release.

>> No.18118152

>>18116437
All the episodes have different accomplices, but the main culprit is the same. You are not supposed to figure out that Kyrie and Rudolf are the killers because real life events are not meant to be solvable. It doesn't even matter.

The point of Umineko is to figure out who the culprit is, what they planned to do and why they did it. We are not looking for the real culprits that ended up killing everyone, because they are opportunistic killers and didn't have any motive beyond being greedy as fuck. Exposing them as the culprits is meaningless.

As for the Hanyu thing... I think she disappears and loses consciousness when she's not around Rika. There seems to be a difference between the Hanyu that Rika can communicate with and the 1000 year old Hanyu that literally followed Ooishi for his entire life.

I don't think it's a plothole that Ryukishi didn't notice or anything like that. There must be an explanation that Ryukishi simply didn't bother thinking of or explaining in detail.

Maybe Hanyu's existence is only possible around Rika. Maybe she can only stalk people infected with the parasite (Hou seems to hint to this). Or maybe the game master makes her pass out when she's about to find clues through supernatural means and she regains consciousness thinking she actually investigated and didn't find anything suspicious. There is also the possibility that she finds Takano scary and refuses to follow her.

There is a 9th chapter that is basically an epilogue for the story. It's included in Higurashi Rei and will probably be released on Steam SOMEDAY. It's really nice, fleshes out an important character and connects Higurashi with Umineko.

What do you mean by unplayable? The translation for the Kai chapters was pretty decent (ignoring very occasional awkward lines). The music and sound effects can be restored with patches.

The original translation was only borderline shit in the first four arcs. They really improved after that.

I don't think you read the updated Steam translation at all, anon.

Besides some minor typos here and there (and some uncalled F-bombs from Lambda), both Question and Answer arcs were phenomenally well translated and way better than the old translations overall (except for a meme or two that got lost, like the duct tape thing with Erika, since it wasn't quite the right translation).

I'd argue that Saikoroshi-hen is part of the main story. I consider it mandatory and it's a shame that so many people on Youtube ignore it because they can't patch it to look like generic anime garbage.

It's a good chapter with very interesting themes, but the beginning can be really off putting because Rika apparently dies and loses the peaceful world she worked so hard to earn. It's way too cruel and can make you feel like Ryukishi ruined the happy ending just to artificially extend the story. And "Mion" turns out to be an asshole in this world, which makes the reader feel like the real Mion is not an inherently good person and is only like that because of her upbringing. Most players never realize that the Mion in this world is actually Shion because they never got permanently switched as kids.

If you can put up with that and trust the author not to make stupid decisions, everything is cleared up at the end and you end up loving the chapter. For me, it's the real ending of Higurashi. A must read.

>> No.18118355

>>18118270
He is talking about Higurashi.

The steam version has a subpar translation, the Satoko sprite is censored and the chapters are released chock full of bugs, crashes and typos that they take months to fix. It's OK, but it could be MUCH better.

The Umineko translation is better because it's based on the old one. I miss some of the memes, though. And their engine is kind of shitty. It can't even display rain, so all you get is static rain edited onto the background.

The old translation may have some inaccuracies when it comes to solving the epitaph, but that's it. Nobody tries to solve it anyway and most English speakers do it without the "capital" hint because it means nothing to them. The overall experience is slightly better in every way and you get the original music intact (System0 got censored in the steam version). The steam version is still great, but I think the old version with the old engine and the old translation is the best way to experience Umineko.

Complete Umineko 1-8 on Steam is like 51 euro in here at least (no promotional prices, since New Year's sales is cheating, especially for old releases).
And that's some 160+ hours of pure text.

Higurashi 1-5 (missing 3 chapters for a full release of the original content) is 36 euro, with each new chapter costing around 8 euro or less (except the forth which is pretty small, and the first one since promotion, both 6 euro each)

Considering the last two chapters are rather big, they will probably cost 10. In the end, Higurashi covering up to the 8th original release will be more expensive than Umineko.
And that's around 110+ hours of pure text (less than Umineko).

Loved umineko, higurashi doesn't appeal to me. Batshit universes with doomed romance are my jam. Last i heard the new project was some rose thorn days or something, which also didn't look anything like umineko.

Episode 8 was the ending of the story, but Saikoroshi (one of the arcs in Rei) is basically the epilogue. It develops Rika's character and her relationship with her parents and friends. It's a very satisfying ending that connects the story to Umineko. You should definitely read it.

The other two Rei arcs are pure comedy and the translation is pretty bad. I wish I knew how to edit the text to make it less awkward.

The Hou exclusive arcs are pretty weird and I really like them. Some of them happen in random worlds outside Rika's story.

All the stuff I mentioned is good and written by Ryukishi.

The console arcs are written by different people and not canon. There are a lot of them and I never bothered with them. I don't think they are even translated.

So, let me get this straight.

Rosa and George worked together to kill everyone.
Rosa felt guilty for killing Beatrice 2.0 and decided to fulfil the literal aspect of the epitaph to revive her. She took on Shannon's love for Battler because who knows.
George wants to kill everyone so that he can run away with Shannon.
Rosa kills everyone in closed room but if she's killed, George starts killing and doesn't care about closed rooms, see ep 3 and ep 5.

Ep 1 is just Rosa faking her death while Nanjo sits in front of her so no one notices she's not dead. Then she kills everyone else after pretending to be dead.
Ep 2 is obvious that Rosa is in charge of everything though Shkannon theory says that Rosa was meant to be in charge.
Ep 3 has Eva find the gold and Rosa gives up killing people, as per the agreement. George doesn't like that and kills Rosa and Maria then everyone else. Georges gets shot by Nanjo but doesn't die. George later finds Nanjo, kills them then dies later. Eva finds out that her son killed everyone and keeps everything a secret.
Ep 4 is just Rosa kidnapping everyone and then killing them after the family demand to see Kinzo.
Ep 5 has Battler solve the epitaph immediately, so Rosa doesn't kill anyone. George still wants to go with the plan so he kills Rosa and fakes his death. Then kills everyone and is able to put the envelope because he's dead.

The annoying part is that people argue that Rosatrice has no love for the author but it's the other way around. With Shkanon, the answer for ep 1 is 'the narrator lied' whereas Rosatrice has a direct solvable answer.

Ryukishi is the God of the WTC universe and Featherine is his avatar in the meta. Ikuko is Featherine's avatar in the "real world". Therefore, Ryukishi is above the meta and the meta is above the real world but is influenced by it.

It's like how Bernkastel and Lambdadelta controlled piece versions of themselves in EP2 and EP3. You could theoretically kill them in the gameboard, but they are just a avatars. Their real bodies are in the meta.

Featherine supposedly works the same way. She exists in the realm of the gods. The Featherine we see in EP8 is simply her avatar in the meta. That's why she can literally "write" how she defeated Lambda, why she can use the red truth in the real world and why Ikuko's existence is so convenient. She wrote herself into reality because she's far above that plane of existence.

The real question is... What is the real Featherine like? Is she Ryukishi? Does she look just like her meta avatar? Or something completely different? Also, is the world of the gods our world? Or is it supposed to be a fictional world from our perspective?

My theory is that the Ryukishi we know is just a body double and the real one is a woman.

EP8 makes perfect sense as the chaotic mess it is when you consider what is happening in Rokkenjima Prime at the same time, and it never actually rushed its points too much (it just didn't went explicit, and that was also an important plot device per se.

Umineko was never meant to spoonfeed answers to its readers, and its very core, it was meant to be a love letter to the mystery genre and a game between author and readers.

The reason why he made answers in a separate medium instead of expanding plot points as he did being the executive producer of the Higurashi console arcs (he could have done that in the PS3 release if he so wanted, most likely) is probably because he would never want to do so in the actual VN.

not that difficult really, EP7 shown us just how easy things were to work out.

I hate them too. When I read Umineko, I get immersed in the story and suspend my disbelief. I forget that the characters are just sprites appearing and disappering. So when a CG suddenly appears and breaks the "flow" of the sprites, it's like I'm seeing the author manually inserting a CG into the game. It really takes me out of the story and reminds me that I'm playing a VN.

Imagine that you are reading a VN and suddenly the happy music changes to something really melancholic because a character started talking about a sad event. But they only mention the sad event and three lines later they go back to talking about something completely different, so the music changes again in like 10 seconds.

This hypothetical scenario would be really awkward and make you think "wow, they changed the music too quickly", breaking your immersion. That's how I feel about CGs. You spend the whole time imagining the scenes with the help of sprites and suddently this big fucking static image appears and takes you out of the "trance".

I don't mind it in other VNs, but Umineko wasn't written with CGs in mind. It's obvious when the sprites are supposed to be on screen but they are not because a CG is replacing them.

The CGs are fine, I just don't like to see them during the actual story. And I think the Alchemist sprites are really bland compared to the originals. They look really good, but they simply pale in comparison. They lack the charm of Ryukishi's crude drawings.

The designs themselves don't bother me that much, though. What I find disappointing when I compare them to the original sprites is how plastic and shiny they look. They feel cheap and I prefer the hand drawn look of the originals, with all their imperfections.

It's like how the new Simpsons episodes look like dogshit. The old ones were hand drawn and the characters were slightly off-model half the time, which looks beautiful.

Ever played Subarashiki Hibi? Don't look it up, it's a great fucking VN and it can be easily ruined by a couple of spoiler images. Anyway, I love how the sprites and CGs look in that game. The way the lines are drawn, the way the sprites are colored and how deep the eyes look. It's like a colored MANGA and it's fucking beautiful. Most other VN sprites and CGs have that "modern computer-animated anime" look that doesn't look bad but feels cheap and generic. As if the characters are made of shiny plastic.
