It's been a while.

MYSTERY TIME

Battler makes a surprise visit to Rokkenjima, three days after a huge thunderstorm hit the island.
He came on a whim, but decided to tour the mansion, and wanted to round his visit off with a visit to Kinzo.
Genji opened the door to Kinzo's study after any attempts to call out Kinzo's name turned out fruitless.
Inside, Battler, accompanied by Genji, Nanjo, Kumasawa and Gohda find Kinzo slumped over his dinner table, which was set with several dishes of a full course meal.
Nanjo verifies that Kinzo is not only dead, but he has been for three full days, at the time of the thunderstorm. Kinzo appears to have been strangled to death.
Yet for some reason, the full course meal on the table appears to be fresh, the soup is still lukewarm and the rest of the dishes look fresh enough not to give off some terrible smell.
There's no way the dishes had been sitting there for three days without smelling horrendous.
So for whatever reason, one or more of the four people who had access to Kinzo's room, Genji, Nanjo, Kumasawa and Gohda had prepared a fresh meal for an obviously dead Kinzo.

It is a puzzling case. You may ask for the statements Battler took from the four suspects but /RED/ is a precious gift. But perhaps you already have some clues.
As always, /BLUE/ is encouraged if you want to earn a /RED/.

How does health work in OMK? I know that the life bar is shared between the two characters.

Black Battler is supposed to have the worst HP. If I choose him, do I get less total HP to begin with? Or are my health points the same no matter which two characters I choose but Black Battler receives more damage? I doubt it, since there is supposedly a defense stat (Dlanor's ability doubles it).

Does anyone else find the magical narrative in the pre-chiru gameboards really interesting? Beatrice is supposedly a thousand year old witch that lives in a golden castle hidden away by magic somewhere in Europe. Kinzo summoned her and exchanged his soul for 10 tons of gold, but eventually fell in love with her and used some sort of magic ritual to seal away her powers and prevent her from leaving her physical body and escaping. Or some shit like that. Then she kills herself, all the Kuwadorian shit happens and her spirit remains in the island, unable to escape or use any magic beyond mere pranks. But she finds two servants with "matching wavelengths" and gets one of them to break the mirror and release part of her power. During the final family conference, Kinzo starts a ritual to revive her and open the door to the golden land. The witch uses her powers to kill people by magic. She finally revives, but Battler's anti magic power is too strong, so she decides to rewind time over and over again to make him surrender.

Chiru goes full meta and treats all that stuff as fiction. The magic narrative is thrown away and the meta narrative replaces it. Beatrice is revealed to be the human culprit, rather than Kinzo's witch. And even Ronove is treated as the meta version of Genji, rather than a random demon from Hell really popular among witches. By the end of Chiru, most of the magic characters have become meta characters and their existence is tied to Beatrice's gameboard, even the demons and the Chiesters. It's really interesting.

She's a piece of furniture with no gender.

I wonder what would happen if lolis were that easy to fuck up. You could have a 10 year old loli castrated and she would keep her feminine charm, female psych, girly face and loli curves without ever hitting puberty. I don't know what the long term effects would be, though. Probably something fucked up.

I understand that the Higurashi anime was the first adaptation of his work and it turned out half decent, so Ryukishi must have been very proud of its success.

But I wonder if Ryukishi is aware of the fact that the Umineko anime is a steaming pile of shit. Does he really see it that way or is he just like "oh, it had some problems"? Japanese people can be bizarrely polite.

It is terrible, though. The animation looks nice sometimes and the opening is great, but the whole "creepy faces" thing is something they deliberately put in to make money off the Higurashi fans. And it was already something they pulled out of their asses in the Higurashi anime. The novel had a completely different feel to it.

Some things were difficult to adapt because they only made sense in a VN, like the red text or the whole reliable/unreliable narrator thing. But the anime was still directed like ass by the same bitch that directed Higurashi. The only reason Higurashi turned out decent is because the story was more straightforward and so fucking good that not even Chiaki Kon could completely ruin it.

Let's try this again.

Let me take some time to answer the questions posed in the other thread in my next post.

>Can we get some statements from the suspects?
Battler took statements from Genji, Nanjo, Kumasawa and Gohda. Keep in mind that they might of course be lying, or telling the complete truth. The day Battler discovered Kinzo's body was Saturday.
>Genji: I last saw Kinzo on wednesday, just after the thunderstorm set in, blocking the island from the outside world. I brought him rations of food since he declared he wanted to be left alone during the storm. I did speak to him through the door on Friday evening though.
>Nanjo: I last saw Kinzo on Tuesday, when we played a game of chess. After that he wanted to be left alone, and I was stranded on the island because of the thunderstorm. Along with Genji I sometimes spoke to Kinzo through his door, but he just replied angrily.
>Kumasawa: I haven't seen Kinzo all week, but talked with him through his study door every day since the storm began to make sure he was still safe. He answered back every day, though in his usual angry voice.
>Gohda: I last saw Kinzo before the thunderstorm began. After that I had very little to do with him, not even preparing him any meals since the thunderstorm hit the main electrics and caused the fridge and freezer to stop working. We all ate canned foods. For once, I truly felt like I had lost in the kitchen.

This should give you something to work with.

>>18003153
Let me start by getting the obvious possibilities out of the way.
First of all, that first red is quite meaningless. /BLUE/ We don't know how much time Battler spent on the island before finding Kinzo, so it's entirely possible for one of the servants to have prepared the food as soon as they heard Battler was coming over (in this case, Gohda would have been lying about the fridge being broken). Their intention was to give the impression that somebody else must have been inside Kinzo's study to prepare the food, and that therefore the killer is not one of them. They are also lying about having talked to Kinzo after Wednesday.
Of course, that would be way too simple.

/BLUE/ The killer stayed inside Kinzo's study the entire time. The food was indeed prepared "for Kinzo", that is, to disrespect him. The person who answered Genji, Nanjo and Kumasawa was the killer.
I don't really believe this is the case, either.

Motivated by your refusal to answer a previous /BLUE/:
/BLUE/ The full course meal on the table only appears to be edible. In truth, it was only made to look (and smell) like food, but it cannot actually rot. The killer prepared this when he realized that he couldn't leave the island during the thunderstorm. His intention was to make the person who discovers the body believe that somebody must have entered Kinzo's study after Wednesday, when in fact nobody could have done so. There is some mechanism X that allows the soup to remain lukewarm. One of the servants was an accomplice, and will prevent the rest of them from realizing that the food is fake.

I'll try to get some actually serious theories later, but for now I'm drawing a blank.

/RED/ The killer did not stay inside Kinzo's study the entire time; meaning that once Kinzo was killed, the killer did not stay in the study until Battler discovered Kinzo's body.

/RED/ The food courses on the table are edible, but one would be wise not to eat them. They are made from actual ingredients and are not made fake, like made from plastic or other such trickery.

/RED/ The food was made at some point to create a false crime scene, but the thunderstorm meant that the culprit had an annoying problem which almost caused a second killing.

It feels like you gave a little too much information with the third /RED/ of the previous post, but I'm still a little confused, so I'll take it. Here are my thoughts so far.

/BLUE/ Gohda is the one who murdered Kinzo. He lied about the fridge and freezer being out of order, because he had initially planned to use them to hide the circumstances surrounding Kinzo's murder. He wanted to make it look like Kinzo choked on his food and died without anybody else's intervention, but nobody would believe that Kinzo was eating at the time the murder took place. Therefore, he decided to stuff Kinzo's body in the freezer, prepare some food and wait for the timing to fabricate the scene which Battler saw in Kinzo's study. However, Nanjo staying on Rokkenjima ruined this plan, which made Gohda panic. He decided to wait for Nanjo to leave, but when he learned that Battler was visiting Rokkenjima after the thunderstorm, this was no longer possible. Not knowing what to do, he stuck to his original plan of using Kinzo's study, but this failed completely due to Nanjo.

This argument is still full of holes, but I'd like to check these statements:
/BLUE/ The significance of the food is that it was meant to make it look like Kinzo had choked on it, but this plan failed when Nanjo was forced to stay in Rokkenjima.
/BLUE/ Kinzo's body was moved after his death.
/BLUE/ Gohda is lying about the fridge and freezer being out of order.

Overall, the new netcode is way better than vanilla. I played against someone on the other side of the world and he was able to pull off stuff that, by his own admission, would be "offline only" in OMK. Same-continent matches were always smooth.

Can you remap a keyboard keys?

>> No.18005516

>>18005470

Nope, unfortunately not. From what I heard keyboard rebinding is possibly being considered for a post-release patch, but because the netcode is the team's central focus at the moment and like 95% of everyone ever plays with a pad or stick, it's understandably not an immediate priority for them.

On Steam Forums they're recommending vjoy as an interim solution, which I assume is what keyboard warriors have been using to play OMK for the last 6 years.

The translation is apparently done by members of Witch Hunt. I've touched very little of story mode since my interest is in the online, and I don't speak Japanese so I can't judge how accurate things are, but from what little I played it seemed alright; I wouldn't be the best person to ask about what might be an objectionable/bad translation. I noticed at one point that they translated "Beato" as "Beatrice" for whatever reason, but it seemed like a one-off mistake.

What really struck me as strange is that the command lists are entirely untranslated. I can sorta forgive the names not being translated since you'd apparently get shit like

>Let the one of you that wants to eat the bullet Maria chambered for me come forward, uwooooh!
or
>All You Can Eat Chocolate and Rare Cheese
or
>Sweet! Thanks for coming to see me Today!

But not even the button sprites? C'mon.

There's no reason for a professional translator to work in the small VN industry when they can work in the big book industry instead. Keep in mind that VNs are very niche and don't sell very well

Umineko ruined my life.
I just liked it so much that everything else since then has paled in comparison. Just nothing has been able to produce the same emotional response in me since then.
Even on rereads, it leaves me stunned like nothing else, I need a day of rest after the magic ending since I'm too spiritually drained to function.

I may be just a faggot without taste, but this just makes me more unable to understand how it is possible to spend so much of your time through the years and 8 books, and still come out of the end screaming that it sucks because it wasn't a cut and clear mystery with a charming Lupin-esque culprit.

I particularly despise the "Since his brother died he just went to shit" ones, since it feels like they didn't even read the damn thing.
Even the reasoning they use to justify that viewpoint makes it feel like they went in already knowing it was "supposed" to suck from some arbitrary point onwards, and they went in already on the lookout for reasons to hate the second part, instead of genuinely noticing something amiss.

Rosa seems to be the most fun character in the game, chose to make her my main almost immediately. Haven't decided who would keep her a company, I liked so many characters. Lambda is great zoner and I usually gravitate towards these kind of characters in fightings, Erika is very agile and seems to be easy to pick up and just play but I'm struggling to have good damage output with her. Battler's grope move is ingenious and I really like how he occupied the role of Ryu in the roster. Dlanor appears to be the only grappler in the game and she's quite good at that. Eva's moves are weird, but her animations make me so hard I just can't help myself. Overall I'm impressed by the game, very unique and well-made, great variety in fighting styles and they really captured the essence of the characters from novel. Also it seems to be easier to get into than most anime fighters I've got to play. Great stuff

Using arrow keys is kinda unintuitive for fighting games. 236 in particular you have to press down then right while holding down before letting go of down while still holding right all in a split second. Its very different to just rolling your fingers across the two keys and hoping that the game will be forgiving and do what you thought you were doing.
There is also the problem with some keyboards cheaping out on the detection side which won't allow you to push certain buttons together. Some keyboards advertise "anti rollover", which allows for just about any two, three or even five keys to be pushed at once. (Most keyboards have special consideration for the control alt del etc keys' detectors, most other keys can only be pushed when they are the only key being pushed due to shared detector rows/columns.)

Xbone controller here, works fine as long as you remap the inputs to match the input display so X is weak/ok A is medium/back and B is powerful. Makes it easier to read the move commands. Takes a while to get used to press X to select things though

Going to need some advice on that, how do you even do the motions with the arrow keys?

>> No.18025026

>>18024995
Not him but I find motions much easier with arrow keys. Just pressing right down right for a DP feels instant compared to having to do it on a dpad. I tend to alternate fingers based off of what I need. I normally use two fingers for normal stuff like movement, quarter circles and DPs. I'll use three fingers when I need to use a half circle move.

How is it difficult? From the 1P side: quarter circle forward is down, right. DP motion is right, down, right. Half circle is left, down, right. And so forth. Sometimes it's even faster because all you have to do it hit the buttons, not like a d-pad where you have to roll your thumb for the entire motion.

I'm going through Episode 4 right now but I'm a bit confused. Is this episode taking place in the past and present at the same time? I'm currently on the part where Ange is summong the seven sisters from nothingness, but I don't recall them dying in episode 3. Also, is Maria supposed to be some sort of ghost or what? Is Ange summoning her image or something? She's supposed to have died on the island. Also, what happened to Beatrice?

Oh, and were there only two mysterious bottles found because of the first two episodes?

>> No.18026869

Get the hell out of here before you get spoiled. There is a forum where you can discuss Umineko without fear of spoilers.

https://forum.rokkenjima.org/

>> No.18026896

>>18026820
Don't bother with spoilers because nobody else will. You should get out of here ASAP.

Anyway, the stakes were "dead" for 12 years until Ange summoned them again. They were only active during October 4 and 5 because Beatrice summoned them.

You can interpret Maria as a ghost if you believe in magic, a delusion if you believe Ange is completely insane or a metaphor for Ange reading her diary (meaning that she isn't literally having conversations with an illusion of Maria, it's just a metaphor for what's really going on).

The bottles are implied to be the first two episodes. As for what the rest of the episodes are... Well, you'll find out eventually if you keep thinking. Don't just stop thinking altogether because Umineko almost never explains anything explicitly, it just gives you a ton of hints so you can put two and two together.
