Old thread died. We're one month away from C93.

Anyone from /jp/ going? I've been thinking about going to C93 to meet an artist I idolize who will probably have a booth.

Since I live nearby I thought about going every single day like I've done previous events too, but lately it feels like too much of a drag, plus the cost is high. Will end up going every day anyway, since some of the less-known artists I definitely want to support are all on different days. Whom are you hoping to visit?

Sure, we have the convenience of scanlations but those can take a while to come out.

I already mentioned above, but to review, you can expect the end of the line to be somewhere outside. Look for 最後尾, avoid 列の途中. Be sure to make space when you see staff passing through with a line. If you actually know what you want and all, by all means, line up as early as you can. Depending on the circle and the demand, they might sell out quickly, last time I went I saw the first sold-out circles packing up at shortly after 12. It's mostly smaller and lesser-known circles who unexpectedly meet high demand, e.g. when they luckily went with a show or theme that got very popular before a lot of other artists could jump in, but you probably don't want to take a risk when it's your first time there.

Most people seem to be interested in day 3, though, so the first two days are good to show up later and just become familiar with the locality and the procedures etc., basically a test run, the advice is aimed at those people.

You can buy the catalog later if it is just something you want to hold onto. The thing is too big to carry around with you so don't bother with that until you're basically done on day 3 (they won't sell out even at the event because nobody buys it there). There is nothing of actual value in that thing that you can't just get online. If you have the DVD catalog or an account on the web catalog you can just print customized maps with information regarding the tables and circles you care about, so the maps in the physical catalog (about as big as a telephone book) aren't useful.

Here is a shitty image for reference. In this example, we're looking at table シ86 in the East (東) Hall (numbered hall 4). The table is a "shutter" table in that it is along the perimeter of the facility in an opened area that is normally closed off with a shutter. The table will face outwards of the facility versus inwards like most of the other perimeter/wall tables, so the line goes directly out.

The line in front of the table is usually fairly short, and the person at the end holds the 列の途中 sign indicating that they represent the end of the "middle" section of the line. You should see another much longer line nearby, usually with some staff holding a sign indicating which table/circle they are helping. Way back at the very end of that line should be a person holding a sign that reads 最後尾, which is the end of the line.

>> No.18020160

>>17990643
You basically need to guestimate lines based on lines from previous years, the content of what that circle is selling (some vary wildly year-to-year), and general placement. Couple of things you can assume:

1. Anything along the wall is going to have some kind of line, whether it be 10 minutes or 2 hours.
2. Monitor Twitter and other social media related to the circles you care about. The more people talk about a circle's stuff for an upcoming event, the better chances are people will be lining up.
3. If the circle is notorious for selling out quickly/not bringing enough merchandise then you should assume that trend will continue. Circles known to sell out fast simply attract most of the early birds who will prioritize that circle over others just like you.
4. Goods from circles that are expected to sell for crazy prices or have very high demand after the event will be targeted by re-sellers. You're going to see shops in Akiba on days 4+ selling stuff for 5-10x the event price, with stacks of those books/items in the store.

Some of the less popular artists are willing to do sketches for you if you buy their book/goods. If this is something you're looking forward to then bring a sketchpad for them and leave it with them until later in the day when you can come pick it up. You'll need to be able to speak some extremely basic Japanese though most of the time.

The thing I want the most is from Noizi Ito (circle: Benja-Ming and Fujitsubo-machine). I have no idea whether she is still relevant or not but judging from the fact that her table is located along the wall, I guess I have to line up for it first. And obviously the stuff from Himura Kiseki (author of tawawa on Monday) is gonna sold out quickly. Another one is Mushimaro8 which I wanted but not as much as the previous 2 artists. And the rest on third days are all hentai doujin like Asanagi and 40100-go. If I missed them I can always get them from sadpanda.

One thing I am confused is that there are certain artist that I considered as godly artist not have their booths located alone the wall, for example As-109 and Krenz. Does this mean that their stuff won't be as popular and I don't need to put them as priority? One interesting to note is that Shibayan's booth is not located alond the wall too.

I was able to pick up Noizi Ito's book last time without too much trouble so you should be fine (3rd book, second row for reference). As for Krenz, he is moderately popular but I don't think I've ever seen him along the wall. He is at 東ユ31b this time which is the "end" of a row, which is also a spot for popular artists that can't get a wall table. Last time I think he sold out of his newer book pretty early though - he is offering it again this event so you can pick it up this time.

>> No.18020360

>>18020309
I did caveat that statement by stating that I am talking about less popular artists - basically nobody any of us would probably know. One of the guys that I typically see there spends almost the entire event just going around looking for non-name artists that are willing to do sketches and have an art style he is at least marginally interested in. He just hands out books the first half of the day, then spends the rest of the day picking them up.

There have been a few instances where an artist will leave early and take his book with them, and then show up at the next event (or even a year later) with his book hoping that he shows up to pick it up. If he manages to note the artist's name/circle then he is usually able to relocate them and get his book back with the sketch, albeit after several months.

Could be anything from him being busy the other days to the organizers only having a spot for him on day two. Some of the official artists have booths on day three as well, so they aren't all consolidated to a single day.

Also, don't drink much in the morning and don't eat anything that will induce any sort of bowel movement until at least the evening. There are public toilets that you can use while you're in line, but many of them have long lines and you don't want to screw around with that. There are bathrooms in Big Sight but again you can't waste more than a few minutes with that unless you are good with missing out on items.

The main problem for me (and likely others) is the fact that the vast majority of books require de-binding (thus destroying them) if you want to properly scan them. I've been scanning every book that I can' which is bound in a manner that allows me to scan it without de-binding it, and in some cases I even buy a second copy so that I can de-bind it and scan it.

To get most of this stuff scanned will require people who are willing to destroy books, or some way to finance replacement books. Some books are going to be incredibly expensive to replace, so you'll likely to never see them scanned.

Last time I went to Comiket was at summer 2016 for C90. I looked through the guide linked earlier (https://theotareport.wordpress.com/2013/12/01/comic-market/)) for refresher, but would like to clarify some things, and just ask general stuff.
1. When going, I remember company booths being at the bottom of the West Halls, while the guide says that they are at the top. Do I remember wrong, or was that changed from 2013 when the guide was written?
2. Another thing I remember, on Day 3 company booths were cleared away, and space was used for doujin circles. Will that be the case this year too?
3. Last time I just walked through the event with no clear direction, but this time I actually have some circles I'd like to visit, and maybe bring them some small gifts, like candies from my home country. How accepted is that generally?

1. The corporate booths are going to occupy one of the lower west halls (hall 1) and the upper west halls. The second lower west hall is under construction.
2. No, the area is reserved for corporate use all three days, but that isn't to say that some companies may pack up after day 2. You should check their websites and social media feeds to be sure.
3. Smaller circles will probably be cool with that, but the busier/popular ones may not want to deal with that, or just basically take your stuff and shoo you away.

"Normal" doujinshi are printed by professionals on commercial printers. The artist sends off their stuff, some number of days later they get back X copies of their book, bound and everything.

A copybook is pretty much just printing the pages off yourself, folding them in half, and stapling them. "Copy"book, as in, photocopier. It's the manga equivalent of distributing your game by burning CD-Rs yourself.

As a result they tend to be mostly sketches or short stories, never get large print runs, and are restricted to conventions. Which makes them hard as fuck to get a hold of. Except some of them end up on Suruga-ya, or get bought&scanned at the convention, or get included in a future book/digital release, or a bunch of them get published as a compilation.
