Congratulations anon!

I've heard that, but it's one game I absolutely can't beat, maybe it's the lack of resources, or maybe I just can't wrap my head around when and where to use Trance.

>> No.17647381

I find that taking a break from the games and going back gives me a moment of insight where I am able to do much better.

>> No.17647384

My problem with TD is accidentally ramming into the bosses/fairies. It's fairly easy to memorize when to use Trance.

>> No.17647392

So I should actually be using it as a routing sense and not an "Oh shit i'm about to die" sense?

>> No.17647410

Yep, you should only use Trance when the fairies with the life and bomb thingies appear, as their value is doubled. Or at least that's worked for me.

>> No.17647484

Everything was blurrier back then.

When I was clearing TD for the first time, I memorized where to use Trance, but used it to skip spell cards rather than collect resources. As long as you can spawn and grab a good amount of the life pieces (remember, that depends on killing certain enemies fast enough), you shouldn't need to worry about doubling them just to get a 1cc.

>> No.17647544

>but used it to skip spell cards rather than collect resources

That actually makes a lot of sense. Will try that strategy instead of mine next time.

>> No.17647594

I'll try to use both of those, I need to sit down and figure out which spell cards I want to bomb/trance through and then see how well I can do.

And it was really blurrier? I figured it might be down to window size, or move speed or something.

>> No.17647650
File: 197 KB, 491x782, Th16Aya.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

Last thread there was an anon saying Aya was worse than Cirno and after 1cc'ing HSiFS as Aya with all the seasons (as well as clearing Extra), I can say I disagree. Her speed can come in handy (like when you have to rush over to the PoC and back) and she's evidently not the weakest is since I could capture the spellcards that I couldn't capture as Cirno.

>> No.17647673

AyaFall is a great shot in my opinion.

>> No.17647703

I was mostly joking. Newer games have higher-resolution interfaces, but the actual sprites in the play area have always been the same size, so any game played in a 1280x960 window should look pretty much the same.
Still, I've experience the same phenomenon; the first-gen games just seem a little harder to play precisely for some reason.

You can use the vsync patch to change a game's framerate, but that's not the main purpose: If you set the frame rate to 30, the game will run half as fast, and if you set the frame rate to 120, the game will run twice as fast, so you shouldn't do it unless you want the game to be much easier/harder.

Boxes ticked.

Maybe it's down to different playstyles, but I found Aya absolutely miserable to use, doubly so with Fall subseason. Not only can you not concentrate your fire on bosses to approach Mari-tier damage, but you don't get enough spread to make stages any easier than they are with Mari, so aside from the slightly better bomb, what's the point? Just mobility?

>> No.17649468

That's a pretty fast clear, good job!

>what is the K for and all the other shit
The key in the upper right are special markings. There is no kanji to the left of the uppermost box, just a circle for a regular clear.
Below that there's the first kanji of IN (EIyashou), and indication of which final stage the clear is on.
For TD (SHINreibyou) it's a concentric circle for the secret ending.
For LoLK (KANjuden) it's either K (Kanju (ultramarine orb)? Kusuri (elixir)? Kanzenmuketsu (pointdevice)? I'm not sure) for Pointdevice or L for Legacy mode.
Finally for HSiFS (TENkuushou), it's the first letter letter in katakana of the name of the season sub-shot, Spring (HAru), Summer (NAtsu), Fall (Aki), Winter (FUyu).

Also, for me at least, taking some time to make or customize a chart can be a welcome break from grinding whatever goal I'm working on at the time. It's just a bit of fun.
Of course, if you have scores to post, I'm sure there are other skilled players lurking who you could compare with. I've never gotten the impression that that's unwelcome or anything, it's just that almost nobody does. You can start the trend again!

Just use the Magic Wand. Set the tolerance to 0, uncheck the 'anti-alias' and 'contiguous' options, click on a white pixel, and delete.

B, powerful, against marisa. I heard ahead of time that she's by and large the hardest part of the game until Kaguya, and those anons weren't fucking wrong.

>> No.17667050

Earthlight Ray isn't so bad if you don't let it psych you out. The stars have small hitboxes, and the lasers are only 'on' during a fraction of their animation, so you have a lot more room than you might think at first glance.
As for strategy, imagine the lasers weren't there: you'd simply stream the aimed stars back and forth, misdirecting them to open up space to cut back on either end, and staying relatively close to the middle so your shots land (assuming Border team, obviously Scarlet gives you more flexibility). Now, all the lasers do is restrict your horizontal movement a little, so you can't go wildly flying back and forth, and have to use some vertical movement to help with misdirection. As long as you stay calm, stream slowly, and get a grip on the lasers' active time, it's perfectly doable.

You and me both, but Yukari is nice enough to provide an entire easy-modo practice stage before hers so you can learn everything ahead of time.

Just some general questions from a turboscrub

-Is there something different about the way bullets or hitboxes spawn/work in TD? Despite the low bullet densities it feels like it's a lot easier to get hit. It's the most frequent game where I die and don't know what hit me. In other games it feels like I always know how I died but I never see what hit me in TD.

-What is with the weird disconnect in difficulty in TD from Normal to Hard? Normal is pretty much Easy mode in any other game. Hard is your regular Normal until after the opening stages. Suddenly bullet speed increases are vastly higher and it feels harder than Hard mode in some other games.

-In HSiFS straight after the fight with Lily White in Stage 3 sometimes a few of those orb enemies spawn straight after but it's always in different numbers and sometimes they never show. What triggers it and why?

-Does anyone feel like HSiFS uses a completely different skill set compared to the other mainline Touhou games? It feels more like I'm playing GFW sometimes (which happens to be my favourite game anyway).

-In HSiFS is the Summer sub weapon good for anything? It's the one season release I have no clue how to use or with whom.

>> No.17668902

There's nothing different in TD specifically, as far as I know. The way hitboxes are calculated was changed in DS, but every game since should behave the same. Maybe you're finding some bullets hard to see/read because of the backgrounds or something?
This isn't unique to Lily, or HSiFS. Many stages with midbosses are programmed to take a set amount of time to complete; if you beat the midboss before her timer runs out, the remaining time before the rest of the stage resumes will be filled with some optional small enemies. See also: lines of spirits after midboss Larva, ring-shooting fairies after Shizuha, sprinkle-spamming fairies after stage 5 Rin.
The main strength of Summer is that releases only uses one gauge at a time. That makes it good for survival, obviously, because you can use it repeatedly. For instance, it lets you entirely skip Narumi's first and third cards. It also doesn't punish you so much for releasing just to survive in some arbitrary part of a stage.

>> No.17668910

To be fair, I didn't know it worked like that, it's like my second time in the mode. But yeah,
that's what happened

-They way you gotta play TD makes you being in danger constantly unlike other games. It's designed so you gotta stay up and shotgun bosses the most, but this means you are in the are where bullets spawn more frequently. Also, I don't think there are dead zones on TD, you know, when you stand on where a bullet is about to spawn to prevent it from spawning at all.
-I don't think TD's hard mode is particularly hard.
-It depends on how much time it takes you to beat Lily. Happens in most games.
-Personally, nope.
-Summer release does good damage if you use it on top of bosses, and since you can use it multiple times, it can help you get out of trouble more often.

>> No.17668970

>it's always in different numbers and sometimes they never show
I hadn't noticed that in stage 3, but I had noticed that that happens in stage 1. The music is meant to hit certain parts at, well, certain parts of the stage, so you always have to get to the boss at the same time.

>> No.17669006

>-Is there something different about the way bullets or hitboxes spawn/work in TD? Despite the low bullet densities it feels like it's a lot easier to get hit. It's the most frequent game where I die and don't know what hit me. In other games it feels like I always know how I died but I never see what hit me in TD.
Nope. You might be playing more recklessly, maybe.
I'm not sure I agree with that latter part. TD still feels really easy overall for me.
>-In HSiFS straight after the fight with Lily White in Stage 3 sometimes a few of those orb enemies spawn straight after but it's always in different numbers and sometimes they never show. What triggers it and why?
Enemy spawns and such are controlled by how much time you spent on the stage. So how many enemies show up after the Lily midboss depends on how long you took to beat her. Take your time, and few or none will show up. Do it quickly, and you'll see more. They're there so you have something to do after beating Lily but before the next proper enemy wave starts.
>-Does anyone feel like HSiFS uses a completely different skill set compared to the other mainline Touhou games? It feels more like I'm playing GFW sometimes (which happens to be my favourite game anyway).
It does that a bit because of the season release mechanic, yeah. I vastly prefer it here than in GFW though, it's much less memorization reliant in HSiFS.
>-In HSiFS is the Summer sub weapon good for anything? It's the one season release I have no clue how to use or with whom.
The way the release works gives you up to six minibombs you can use to survive better. In a tight spot but can't/don't want to bomb? Boom, release, now you can escape to a safer spot. There are many spots, like Narumi's last spell, where it's very useful. Do be careful though, as Summer doesn't make you invincible or quasi-invincible like Spring and Fall do.

Yes, many resets until you get a run where you get to Nue with enough resources
I mean, it's also hard because you have to go full retard to catch the ufos. It's not that hard once you're at max power or if you're not catching them, but there are parts where you either have a bomb or you lose a life if you're not in "The Zone".
Also Kogasa's spells seem kind of easy but are preety tight. One slip up and she gets you.

How long have you been playing before this? Very clean 1cc!
You shotgun bosses, you POC, you have a route for the stages (with one notable exception on stage 4 - maybe you were just caught off-guard).

You even graze, which is perhaps a little enthusiastic for a first survival run but I don't think it ever made you die so if you like being a daredevil it just makes you a little cooler. One example is on stage 5 against Sakuya, you stick very close to the bullets.

On Sakuya's first boss spell card, you failed at misdirecting the knives. You were too high up on the screen, so they spread out too much horizontally and they killed you.

One general piece of advice I'll give you is to more actively seek holes and safe zones in the bullets. This costs you a bomb against this non-spell, and later a life against Scarlet Shoot.
Overall you have a good grasp on the game, be proud of that.

Nice job! I didn't have anything to do with giving you advice, but I'm sure those who did are glad to see that it paid off.

>How long have you been playing before this? Very clean 1cc!
Embarrassingly long... I've "beaten" almost every Windows game (with continues) on Normal difficulty, but I never bothered going for 1CCs because I just thought "meh, I suck at these games anyway." As for how long I've been playing EoSD with a 1CC in mind? 2 or 3 weeks, but I already had the first 4 stages pretty much memorized.
>You even graze, which is perhaps a little enthusiastic for a first survival run but I don't think it ever made you die so if you like being a daredevil it just makes you a little cooler.
This is something that has been on my mind for some time: is it better to graze or collect point items? A prime example being the kunai-shooting enemies in stage 3. While I generally don't care about score, I do try to aim for 60M by stage 4 for the extends. Other than that, grazing is fun, so I tend to do it on sections that I can reliably deal with.
Thank you for the advice. I'll be sure to keep in in mind.
Also wondering where to go from here... While I'd like to beat the extra stage, that seems a bit beyond my reach for now, so perhaps I'll try clearing the games in order. Maybe I should start one of those charts too...

>> No.17678683

No, and you're lumping very different things together. MariB is a genuine bug, a math error in the program, so that obviously counts as cheating. Malice Cannon probably wasn't an intended strategy, but it is based on the intended behavior of the shots, so it's legitimate if cheap. And Sakuya's knives work exactly as intended, so that doesn't devalue it any more than than the best shot type "devalues" runs in any game.

I don't understand. Alice has terribly low damage by herself, and no range, so in any spell that doesn't let you stay right in front of the boss (ie, most of them), you have to survive many more waves than normal. And since bombs don't do anything to Mokou, unfocusing to drop a Master Spark is no longer a backup option.

As for Keine, her familiars shoot different kind of bullets depending on if you are youkai or human, so don't focus/unfocus a lot while she is shooting, it will make the pattern a mess.

Hmm. It depends on how much more playing you need before you pick up on the lunatic pacing. I made the switch long ago, and now I can't go back to playing Normal in any of the games, because it feels too slow and not challenging. HSiFS is extremely easy and if you know how to avusr the resource system it shouldn't take too long before you get a 1cc. You barely have to dodge any spell or non-spells.

Getting a 1cc in at least one game, I'd say. You might be a newbie, but you're still a lunatic player nonetheless. A regular lunatic player can clear about any game and can't or won't play a lower difficulty due to a lack of interest (unless it's a lower difficulty with a challenge of some sort, like hard no bomb or something).

Remember, the only way to get life pieces in SA is by not dying during spell cards and patterns. In total, the Extra has the potential to give you as many lives as any other, but because of the way they're awarded, dying early on is extra-punishing.
For bombs, SA's power-as-bomb system is already stricter than MoF's for obvious reasons, but the Extra stage really magnifies it. Most of the enemies are relatively tanky, but spew bullets in a way that requires they be shot down quickly and precisely to keep dodging reasonable. If you miss any of the rare power items, or mess up your route and have to bomb, it's very easy to get trapped in a repeated-bomb death spiral as your power dwindles away.
Both of those features probably teach you to play better, but my point was just that SA has by far the least survival-friendly resource system. Like, it really feels mean-spirited in comparison to the rest of the series.

Here's how the TH6 folder looks for me, freshly extracted from the archive and unaltered.

From the "Touhou Project All-In-One Pack, ver. 2016-02-24".

First of all, turn on file extensions, grandma.
Secondly, RTFM. Vpatch will launch whatever is named 東方紅魔郷.exe, so if you want to play the Jap version, just rename it to that.

Parroting what >>17691036 said, rename 102h.exe to 東方紅魔郷.exe and you should be good to go for vpatch. Feel free to remove your current 東方紅魔郷.exe, custom_e.exe and all the th06e_*.DAT files if you never want to play the English at all.

>> No.17691067

The readme doesn't mention that. Works now though, thanks dood

>Important Notes
>To use vpatch with 6, rename the game executable to 東方紅魔郷.exe.
It's also in vpatch's own readme:
>Rename each individual exe file to th**.exe, where the stars are the game number, except for EoSD and Uwabami Breakers, which must be named 東方紅魔郷.exe and alcostg.exe, respectively.
Still, I'll do my best to make it clearer for the next version.

Is Marisa supposed to be really bad in SA? Even power-wise, both Reimu A and B seem to outclass her and her spread shot-types are not even that useful apart from a few cases.

These are the contents of the English readme in my TH6 folder. Can't access the shrinemaiden website so I don't know what that link does. I did some googling earlier about too many frames per second but that just caused more confusion since I got a bunch of "works on my machine" and old irrelevant discussions for older Windows versions, or discussions about the English executable as opposed to the Japanese one. Whatever.

A scrub in need of advice.

Really struggling against EX-Okina's Sword of the Seven Star, it's giving PTSD flashbacks to Clownpiece's non-spell except here I can't bomb my way through. Is there no easier way through it other than just constant micrododging?

>> No.17691260

Yeah and make absolutely sure you stay right in the middle of the screen or the lasers are going to fuck you over. Do abuse the release if you get trapped.

The just spam Reisen's bomb legend was real, now DDC is the only game left to 1cc in Normal difficulty.

>> No.17693171

If you genuinely did that, then you might as well skip straight to Hard or Lunatic for the other games.

Fuck this piece of shit rng game

Which one?

Is there a good way to iron out novice mistakes and shit or do I just gotta keep running the gauntlet until it's second nature? I've heard the photography games are good for practice, but I can't get into them.

Not Lunatic, that's way too much for me, but I'm working on getting Hard in MoF (already gameovered like 5 times to Kanako's last spell). This was my second try at LoLK, having played the game in PD with all the shots and doing Practice mode for stages 4 and 5 helped me a lot, and the run could have been better because honestly, it was terrible, had a lot of wasted bombs in spells I already knew how to capture.

>> No.17693403

You say that as though it were nothing, but it's actually pretty amazing. Clownpiece's attacks are very, very skill-based, so if you can do them consistently enough to 1cc the game, then any Hard should be a piece of cake with a little practice.

>> No.17693421

Who the fuck told you that lol

>> No.17693462

Some people on these threads brought it up a couple times.

EoSD lunatic, Reimu A, specifically on stages 3-4
