I want the next WTC to be set in a tower block. We've had a secluded village, we've had a secluded island, let's have it set in a city but the main focus is on the tower block. You can seclude it by making it only accessible by a key card, so the story can focus only on the residents. Or something like an exclusive hotel to minimize the number of characters.

You'd have the hotel staff, a number of rich business people staying over, a couple who won a free luxury trip there, stuff like that. I just think WTC works because of its secluded setting, and the cruise ship/airplane setting is already very overdone.

How many people have you managed to convince to try reading Higurashi or Umineko? What did it take to convince them?

Reading Umineko can be a serious commitment with how long and complex it can be, so I find it difficult to really encourage people to give it a chance. Even the Steam version isn't released per episode like Higurashi, it's the first four bundled together.

I haven't had the guts to convince people. I know plenty people who watched the Higurashi anime and loved it for the gore and stuff.
I don't have want to recommend the Umineko anime either for obvious reasons. But it's hard to sell the idea of an 8-story visual novel series to people who only watch One Piece, Naruto, and liked Higurashi for its gore. Even explaining the concept of a VN feels like too much.

I would fucking love to get a friend to read Umineko though, just so I could poke him about theories and such.

It was the opposite for me, a friend of mine recommended me the anime and then I moved to the VN out of curiosity. I didn't knew how long it was but I was already hooked so I didn't care. Personally, I think I would recommend higu first, to avoid confusion about certain characters and to see if they enjoy Ryukishi's work. If they seems interested and want more you can recommend umi with no trouble, though if possible I would avoid mentioning how long it would take to finish it, after all if they really enjoy what they're reading it wouldn't matter.

>Even explaining the concept of a VN feels like too much.
The way I try to explain to others is that the sound effects and music create a far more immersive experience for reading compared to a normal book, that's why it sells itself as a Sound Novel rather than a Visual Novel. Sound and music can be used very effectively when it comes to horror, and I sometimes listen to Higurashi's anime soundtrack while reading spooky stories.
But there's also the expectation of detailed CGs or multiple choices and endings like other VNs, which Higurashi and Umineko lacks. There's mods to give it the PS3 graphics and voice acting to make it more appealing, but I find that the voice acting gets in the way of reading at your own pace. The voice acting is still really good, but I'd personally suggest holding off on it for a re-read if it can be helped.

>I thought it was the same person who suddenly started calling the other anon monkey, but whatever.
Oh no, I was the one who started talking about philosophy and metaphysics, hoping to get a good discussion going. It was some other anon who decided I was pretentious and started some irrelevant feud that just fucked up the thread. Maybe I'll try having a serious discussion on Umineko's themes and inspirations some other time, but for now I'll just let it lie because some (or one) of us doesn't like delving deeper into the subject of what has basically become a general for years now.

I could try selling it as a sound/visual experience, but from what I know of my friends they only loved Higurashi for the gore, not the story. It's like Elfen Lied or whatever it's called, they like the shock of seeing that stuff animated, but don't seem to care about the story, which is really important for Umineko.

>I sometimes listen to Higurashi's anime soundtrack while reading spooky stories.
I've made a habit of listening to Stupefaction while looking out of my window in the dead of night. It's spooky and really unnerving but I love it.

It was like this for about 2 months until he caved in and I got the PS3 patch running on his computer. He read about an episode per 1-2 weeks and whenever he finished an episode, we would discuss what he thought about it.

It was amazing, seeing his thoughts on the whole thing. Many times he came close to the truth, and sometimes he even unraveled pieces of the puzzle on his own. He's a lot more of a feely type than me, so he was more in tune with Beatrice's message and he was an avid supporter of magic, yet he still tried to look for answers in the story, but unlike me, he didn't ignore the parts about love etc. so he got a lot closer than I did to the truth. He ignored the locked room mysteries and just focused on who is Beatrice and what is magic.

He picked magic ending. Obviously we're not friends anymore.

I understand, I watched the anime (higu) until the end and enjoyed a lot, then umi but didn't like it as much so I dropped it around the middle. I didn't know what a VN was back then and I wasn't part of any anime community in tumblr, 4chan or anything so I was still kind of innocent about anime as a whole. I learned about it lurking around google images, some pic of the vn, and then I search it and downloaded higu, and the umi.
Very few of my irl friends watch anime, much less VNs. I don't remember the last time I talked about anime with them, like it's not our major interest and it's like a secret part of myself, and not a very importand one. Honestly I'm not the type of person who force my taste (about anime) to others, I might try to recommend the VNs if the opportunity appears, but if that comes to nothing I wouldn't really mind.

Well, what did you expect? This is nothing like reading a detective novel and it feels like mostly bizarre. From the moment you take look at the characters, regardless of what they are saying, you're aware that is more like watching a cartoon instead of reading a book, which makes you to not take it too seriously from the beginning. It's simply not the same, not everyone takes these mix of childishness and seriousness lightly, feels weird and silly at the beginning and might bored someone who is not used to these kind of animation, and it's not like she's wrong about some characters.
It's not because the story is difficult, it just depends of the person. I started with Card Captor Sakura and then moved from there to more mature/funny stuff, slowly. And seriously did you really use the original sprites? They looks boring.

Just finished RGD last season finally. Made me cry manchild tears more so than when I've finished WTC4 chapter around Valentines day. True it wasn't R7's strongest but then again there is only soo far you can get with a story revolving around the underworld and nationalism. Being nothing more than that but even so. Also this videos ending might spoil some who haven't tried it yet. Wondering if we could get a short rgd discussion rolling however underrated it may be. Cameo Battler was quite useless though.

The discussion was basically one anon who declared his love for Umineko because it includes a lot of philosophical elements, but he got a bit carried away and it kinda came across as "high and mighty" to some, which resulted in an anon derailing everything by replying sarcastically and evading bans.
I thought it was interesting, but you know how it goes. Best not to linger on the issue because it can get you banned again.

We see non-gameboard Kinzo in Kanons flashbacks in Ep6 and from Yasu's perspective in Confession. According to both of them he seems like nice dude when he's not senile about Beatrice or the next head.

To be fair, most of the bad shit we've seen (crying about Beatrice and inheritence) was bullshit on the gameboard where he was dead.

I like to believe that if Kinzo stayed alive after meeting Yasu he would've been a lot more chill and they would've sorted out the inheritance and stuff nicely.

What I'm curious about is what really happened with young Kinzo and Bice. It's heavily implied that Kinzo at least had a hand in the massacre for the gold. Did Bice know? Did she still follow him or was she forced against her will? If we take Beato's explanation in EP3 about Kinzo capturing her trying to force her to love him until she died as relating to Bice, that paints a pretty grim picture. But that would also mean that Genji and Nanjo were accomplices to a kidnapping, which I can't see Nanjo doing for what is essentially a stranger at that point.

Pride - Natsuhi
Envy - Kyrie

Greed - Eva

Lust - Rudolf

Normally I would just dismiss this as a coincidence, but with the seven deadly sins already being explicitly referenced via the stakes as well as all the Divine Comedy symbolism, I can't help but feel it might have been intentional on Ryukishi's part. What do you all think?

I never thought about that before. It sort of makes sense for most of them.
Krauss as Sloth though? He's not a great businessman, but he doesn't really show any signs of laziness or lack of vigor.
Hideyoshi as Gluttony? Is that just because he's fat? You could say his businessman lifestyle could be seen as gluttonous, but half the parents are business people.

Other than those two it looks spot it really.

Were they? I can't find any info about that

>> No.17651113

>>17651041
Krauss as Sloth has to do with several things. First is his behavior as the successor to the head. In contrast with Eva who's all about hard work (in order to gain what she wants, hence her being greed), Krauss was born into a superior position from which he doesn't really need to do anything to stand above his siblings. Whenever Eva tries to show how she's better than him, he always falls back on the fact that he's the eldest son and therefore the most appropriate to inherit the headship.

There's also the nature of his career and the way he handles it. As an investor, Krauss naturally doesn't do a lot of work himself, instead using his money to fund other's exploits in the hopes he'll make a profit should they succeed. Yet it's mentioned that Krauss doesn't have enough confidence in his foresight, making it difficult for him to commit to his investments in the long run.

Hideyoshi's sin doesn't necessarily refer to his figure, just like how gluttony doesn't necessarily refer to food. The sin of Gluttony also refers to things like overindulgence and hastiness. The whole reason Hideyoshi's company is in trouble o begin with is because he rushed into making it stock listed and then had his feet swept out from under him. Said company also just happens to be deal with the food industry. There are other small tidbits here and there that further show his "gluttonous" behavior, like the time when he tried to forcibly grab Maria's letter from her, or the fact that he's quick to lend out spending money to children.

I still don't understand how Yasu's hair works. As Lion we clearly see it as long, blond and straight but we are also shown that Shannon is the closet to Yasu's natural form with short, wavy dark hair and for Beatrice and Kanon she uses wigs, even though as a child Shannon clearly has blonde hair like Lion.

Hormone issues don't explain a hair color change, if anything the lack of proper growth hormones would lead to a lighter hair color not darker, the only thing I can guess is that Yasu as Shannon keeps her real hair cut short and dyed brown.

>> No.17651434

>>17651266
Confession of the Golden Witch gave me the impression that for Kanon's hair Shannon did something like wetting her hair or even gelling it down to make it appear darker and straight, which is actually pretty clever on Ryukishi's part if that's the case. It also shows that the Beatrice hair is a wig in the real world.

Also, I don't think Shannon ever had blonde hair. The appearance of Yasu in Episode 7 of the manga is probably just a subjective representation done to further conceal their identity, not their true appearance. Confession even contradicts it by showing young Shannon with hair similar to her current look.

Lion having a different hair color is a bit confusing, as there's no reason for him to fake it. That's actually the reason I used to suspect that Yasu's genetic makeup might be different in the miracle fragment, resulting in a different appearance and possibly even a different gender (back when I was still entertaining the possibility that Lion might be female).

I think the italians initiated the fight, Kinzo's captain welcomed that opportunity and halfway through Kinzo went nuts from the situation the same way his captain did. However it all comes down to survival of the fittest. Kinzo did nothing wrong.

What's your current expectations for WTC5? Do you have high hopes and confidence, doubts, or no strong feelings yet? With so little known about it, right now it's just gut feelings.
Expectations aside, do you believe that Ryukishi could write something that will outdo Higurashi and even Umineko?

Ryukishi really likes to subvert the expectations of his readers. While I'm trying to keep myself from having my expectations too high after waiting for so long, I believe he still has enough tricks and ideas in him to pull some really crafty moments.

Finished Umineko a while ago and despite all the fun I had with it there was something about the ending that left a bad taste in my mouth.
Maybe ending it at the Ricordando il passato drop at the bottom of the sea would of had more impact? By the end we were reaching Lord of the Rings levels of inability to end it
Then again, I think it was physically impossible for Ryukishi to create a truly satisfying conclusion after 70+ hours of investment.

Third season is the most fun AND comfiest read of Ryukishis, with of course the best duo Alan and Keith. (I consider their story, character development, emotional pallete and finale better than the rest of the story altogether, even though the story is pretty good and has lovable setting, characters and story)

Personally I believe in the meta world, and that magic can only happen in the meta world. In the "real" world there is no magic. They're sort of separated by two completely different planes of existence. This also goes for the game board, so long as there's an actual solution for the game board there's no magic. I could go into full detail about how everything in the meta world/game boards relate to the real world, in my theory, but I'm too tired to go over the whole thing.

To show what could have been.
If Ange couldn't live not knowing the truth, she would kill herself. If she kept pursuing the truth, she would either die trying (ep 4 ending) or become Erika, a pawn of others; of the people on the internet seeking the truth (Bernkastel). But if she accepted not knowing the absolute truth and lived with herself by becoming someone else, she could find meaning in life by making reality shine.

Those paths are to show humanity's own struggle with the truth and meaning of life. We can either pointless pursue the truth that cannot be found, kill ourselves, or create art and live happily. And of course, as per Ryukishi, Ange took the latter option of making people happy.

Im more of an advocate of the Higurashi multiverse system being possible to apply to the game boards and outside of it in that Ange dying in one world and living in another one are two separate possibilities, the same way in which the detective whos name I can't remember from Himatsubushi having her pregnant wife die due to disregarding Rika's warning and surviving in another reality are shards of the many possible outcomes. It seems Ryu uses multiverse to confuse his readers when mixing in the meta world but then again it's quite easy to apply multiverse to explain the inconsitencies.

>> No.17681282

>>17681246
Another to thing that I forgot to add, which I found fascinating is one of the TIPs in Himatsobushi regarding the two boxes, a blue and a red one containing items. It didn't matter which box you picked on the first go because what was inside was no better than what was inside the opposite box during the 2nd pick, provided you ctr your way through to get the choices again. When it was revealed that one contained a chewing gum and the other a caramel candy, it was revealed that in the end it didn't really matter. One could say multiverse is like such, having many words existing and preferring one over the other or disliking them all equally are insignificant at the end of the day, yet they are very real.

Krauss-Beato

>> No.17685254

>>17632577

There isn't anybody in these threads that actually believes the Shkanontrice-Yasu Culprit Theory, is there? That retarded, Rube Goldberg machine of a theory breaks so many of Ryukishi's own rules, not to mention so many commonsense principles that it can't be seen as anything more than a complete joke he played on his readers. It is basically Hinamizawa Syndrome 2.0.

It should be obvious to anyone with eyes that Hideyoshi was the culprit, with George as an occasional accomplice/ rouge agent, depending on the tome and the game. His company was going broke, meaning his nigh-perfect kid who trains there with him and his power-obsessed wife would go broke along with him and they'd all lose everything. His wife began to believe that Krauss was even lying to them about Kinzo's death in order to embezzle the inheritance. Lacking proof, but not determination, he decided that he had to go through with it (and he could, since he married in.) Of course, they hid their crimes from Eva until the last possible minute, which is the real reason why Eva in turn keeps the truth hidden from Ange... not out of hate for Ange, but out of love for her family. She wanted to protect them, but of course without love, this cannot be seen.

As for the red text: I took over 125 pages of single-spaced notes on this game about five years ago. Having looked at the raw stats, there is actually less red text invalidating Hideyoshi from being the culprit than any other character in the game (most of which can be overcome fairly elegantly,) and zero extraneous rules such as Knox's or Van Dine's commandments which would prevent him from doing so.

I'd only need about anywhere from a half hour to 40 minutes to do it justice, honestly, but I feel like I'd be stating the obvious. I can't possibly be the first person to come up with this theory. It's the only practical explanation that answers all of the game's basic questions without breaking every rule in the book and also being retarded (Shkanontrice-Yasu Theory,) demonizing the killers to the point of absurdity (BATTLER FAMILY CULPRIT THEORY) or else imposing a motive upon the killer(s) that is almost equally unbelievable as Shkanontrice-Theory's despite systematically denying it (Rosatrice Theory, although he did admittedly make some good points.)

That all being said, I can't actually find many people online who seem to think that he did it.

Rosatrice Theory is actually pretty interesting (albeit really kind of bizarre, from a motive/ accomplice-choice standpoint,) in that it raises a lot of commonsense points about why Shkannontrice-Yasu theory is mostly bullshit, some of which I intend to loosely borrow from.

Since I am apparently also making a video, I'm probably going to listen to it again and fall asleep right now.

I'll have to keep it very short for now, since I'm sick and only just now about to go to bed. That said, I'll probably be able to elaborate in 10 or so hours, assuming this thread is still up, if that's alright?

EXTREME TL;DR - Knox's 8th and 10th severely interfere with any theory that proposes Shkanontrice-Yasu as the culprit, especially if you consider the spirit of the original Decalogue (and if you do, then Knox's 2nd, 4th and 5th can also be said to interfere with said theory, depending on how you interpret them.) Van Dine's 3rd completely invalidates the idea that Shkanontrice-Yasu's motive even can be a culprit's motive, and Van Dine's 10th, 11th, 12th and 20th physically prevent her from being the culprit. Ultimately, both Hideyoshi-George Theory and BATTLER FAMILY CULPRIT THEORY make way more sense, with Hideyoshi-George Theory making the most sense between the two of them IMO, as well as being the most likely scenario.

There are also a shitload of commonsense arguments to be made against Shkanontrice-Yasu as the culprit in general. For instance, why weren't Shannon or Kanon fired for repeated absences or negligence of duty any time they were scheduled to work at the same time? Alternatively: If they were never once scheduled to work at the same time, despite both having worked there for a significant enough amount of time as to make such a thing inevitable, why weren't they? And perhaps even more importantly, why didn't the people in charge of payroll recognize that one servant was getting paid twice? It just doesn't make sense when you put two and two together. At the very least, Natsuhi and Krauss should've been made aware of what was going on, or perhaps instead/ even Jessica, but evidently this was not the case. According to the diehards, Yasu went the whole time without being suspected of any tomfoolery which reeks of pure bullshit... and not the "unintentional plot-hole" kind.

>Knox's 8th

Lmao. There were too many hints in regards to Shannon and Kanon being the same person, both of them being the only furniture with special abilities and the most obvious hints were given to you in episode 6.

> Knox's 10th

This one doesn't work because Kanon wasn't disguising himself as Shannon nor did Shannon disguise as Kanon. Yasu chose to be either Shannon or Kanon, but since Yasu isn't a character in the Umineko cast, then this rule does not apply to her.

Please don't tell me you think of the events in the episodes as real? In the fictional events we know Shannon hung out with Jessica, but in prime Rokkenjima who knows how long this lasted. And as explained, just with the help of the servants, this trick is quite easy to pull off. Also, why would they pay the same servant twice? Obviously they merely added Kanon as a separate servant.

just finished. i picked the "trick" ending but by the end i was left feeling pretty damn empty. i guess it felt too blunt, or melancholy. i can't tell if that's a good thing or not, though. i wanted to view all of this as what it is: an illusion; a fictional story. but i still want to acknowledge the heart and love behind it and believe that it wasn't just a pointless exploration. i felt that ange being all alone in the end paralled how i felt: alone, simply turning the last page in the book. i wanted to go back and pick the magic end, because i felt like i was making myself forget all the emotions i felt during the reading of the whole thing by acknowledging it as fiction, but at the same time i felt like that would be cheapening, or ignoring that lonely feeling i had. i guess i'm stuck between wanting to end feeling understood or wanting to end feeling happy. but i don't know if it's wrong to have one over the other, if taking one makes the other impossible, or even if there is a "right" choice at all. i guess that's one of the main themes, though. it was pretty cool to see erika as she was one of my favorite characters also. great game though for sure got drawn into the meta aspect hard.

You really should see both endings. The moral of Ange's story was to accept the truth but not let it run your life and the way you see the world. Even if her parents were the killers it doesn't mean Ange has to believe that they didn't love her. And even if the candy magic is just a trick, it was intended as something to bring happiness and doesn't need to be exposed. You need to see both sides before coming up with your own "truth". The Manga even shows this by having Ange explain the trick to Beato before still choosing magic in the end.

It is more of a thriller ending rather than the ending of a romantic meta mystery story but I think people severely exagerarte how much of a "bad ending" it is when its really just another conclution to ange's journey.

If I had to guess, Featherine came late into the series and doesn't leave as much of an impression as the other witches that stuck around longer. She's also not shown to be personally involved in the events of Beatrice's games against Battler compared to the other witches.
I like Virgilia, but I can see why she has lots of competition. The other witches are more witch-like, cackling and being cruel, with her most notable scenes only really being the magic battle against Beatrice and the ending of Episode 3. But I also wouldn't doubt the age thing being another factor.

r07 isn't like the autistic webcomic artists we have in the west. He understands that people are going to sexualize anything they find aesthetically appealing, and he himself plays around with fetish-bait in his writing a lot (particularly in higurashi). That's just the shadow side you need to accept if you want people to immerse themselves in your fiction (there's very few people who didn't have some of the weirdest fantasies about cartoon characters when they got into puberty).
I think it has a lot to do with the "let's share this fictional universe and create something even more beautiful together by expanding upon it" doujinshi-mentality vs our western "every man for himself, if you own the copyright you get to decide"-attitude.

The front says "Lies!!!" The back says I can't make out the kanji on the back, but the first part says something like "I know"

"嘘だッ!!!"
"it's a lie!!!"

back:
"してるよね、隠し事"
"you have something to hide"
(for context, it's the "yes, you are" in the picture, scene from onikakushi-hen in which keiichi asks rena about satoshi)

I thought that is what it said since the lines would be close together in the VN but I wanted to make sure.

So what exactly is Erika? We know in the real world she is not real and she is some corpse but what is she in the context of the meta-world? It is both implied that Erika is a separate entity to Bernkastel and that Erika is also Bernkastel. Which is the truth?

I recommend people to read Ep 8 manga directly after the VN. The VN feels incomplete and it feels like you haven't really finished Umineko if you stop after the VN,

Did Rika have to die to become Bernkastel?

Is it too hard to think for yourself?
When he see Bernkastel in ep 2, she wears a goat mask. Goats are people that are seeking the answer but are too dumb. In ep 8, we see a collection of them in the real world that also wear goat masks. Thus, Bernkastel is the manifestation of the people on the internet seeking to find the truth. You'll also notice that Bernkastel was the villain, as so is the reader in a way.
Ep 1-2 were written by Beatrice but ep 3-4 were released on the internet by Tohya. The mystery fans were displeased with how bad Battler was as a detective and asked to put their own. Erika is 'Bernkastel piece' but in a literal sense, she is the mary sue of the mystery fan. She is overly competent, loved by everyone initially and has a comprehensive understanding of mystery cliche. Something no detective story ever does is talk about detective cliche. Every detective simply does whatever they want oblivious to the tropes they exist in. But Erika is allowed to do so because she is born from people that are familiar with detective fiction.
Ep 5 is Tohya allowing the mystery fans to place their own detective in the story and Erika fails horribly. The mystery fans are insulted and humiliated, so when in ep 6 Tohya gives them a second chance, they fuck with him and create the logic error. Erika and Bernkastel no longer care about the mystery but only fucking with Battler who is the gamemaster (Tohya). By the end of ep 6, Battler and Beatrice say the red that even if Erika joins the island, the number will be the same. Meaning that any person +1 X that joins the island will be dead upon entry. You can only use the people on the island to solve the mystery.
In ep 8, Bernkastel creates her own gameboard, and what is curious is that the answer is the same as in tea party 7. Tohya comes back with his own fantasy gameboard but then the rest happens in real life.
In Tsubasa, Black Battler is introduced, perverted by the mystery fans. At one point, Black Battler breaks the rules and kills Ronove. He looks at the sky and screams 'you can stop this if you just tell the answer Tohya'. This is the mystery fans creating their own gameboard using Black Battler instead of Erika because she's already dead.

I hope that answered your question about who is Erika.

Also one final piece of information. In Truth Ending, Ange sees Erika. This is meant to show that Ange has become Erika, a pawn of the mystery fans on the internet seeking the truth.
