What is the classification of the concept of Umineko's meta-battles/logic-fights? I've been scouring tvtropes in order to find examples of other works that have used this kind of narrative device but I haven't been able to find anything.
Surely Umineko didn't invent meta storytelling/conflicts/fights?

Anyway, I've read a shitload of detective novels and I've come across other genres that use meta, but they never seem to combine in the way they do in Umineko.
There's plenty armchair detective novels where the detective discusses the case with his fellows in a sort of meta way. But I've never seen anything like logic battles, even without the overly shounen anime style. It seems unique to Umineko.

Well that's also been said before, but I'm still hooting (hahaha) for a snowy setting. Mountain lodge or village in a snowstorm, unexplained footprints in the snow, owls hooting in the night, something like Stupefaction playing as you peer out of the window and through the heavy snow you could see a figure roaming through the extreme weather conditions. That's just atmosphere though.

Storywise I'd want paranoia. Characters are mostly strangers, not family like in Umineko. Less alien parasites and witches, more grounded, isolated paranoia between a large cast of characters who are there for different reasons. Deaths, disappearances and suspense. Slowly revealing the reason why the cast are all there.

Oh no, you misunderstand. Nothing cheesy like a revenge story spanning years and years. And nothing like U.N. Owen inviting supposedly random people to his mansion in the middle of nowhere. I just like the idea of a fresh approach to WTC, where nobody really knows each other, so there's no established links between the various characters and they have to get to know each other from the start. I was thinking more like

I'd like to read something like that. My favourite arc in Higurashi was Onikakushi, and it was mostly because of all the paranoia. Being against everyone is always scary, and if you add that little touch "I don't know what the fuck is going on", it's perfect.

Even through I watched the anime, that scene in the game where Keiichi's father told him that Rena came to visit, and he figured out that she was just outside of his room, possibly listening to everything, the way it was said was bone-chilling.

If you didn't see it, my main point wasn't about years-spanning revenge, I just want a cast of unrelated people with no real connection or motives. And the deaths only start afterwards, so you need to piece together the evidence presented, and not rely on past encounters etc.

Paranoia is where WTC thrives, I feel. Higurashi nailed it. Umineko had its moments but the meta-fights, cool as they were, took away from the original suspense and paranoia of being stuck on an island with a possible 19th person hiding somewhere.
That's why I'd like to see more paranoia-focused stuff in WTC5, which I think could benefit from a cast that has no ties or affiliations to one another.

Might work if they have no relations to each others. I did like Dangan Ronpa for that reason, people had very few connections with each others, and despite them trying to trust each others, paranoia was still a thing.

Umineko did a great job at presenting the characters, and the fact that they were family changed things a bit. Felt more heartbreaking to think they could be behind the killing. The whole meta plot was completely retarded and ruined the tension, though.
And yes, Higurashi nailed it. The anime heavily supported the "it's magical" side, but the original novel did a fine job of trying to present it as logical, even when really weird stuff happened. Like Rena just standing in the rain, the whispers, the sudden eyes changing, and the fact that the girls knew things. It was really good.
That's a bit funny, I really hoped for something magical the entire time, but when I got the explanation, I was disappointed. Building a mystery is always nice, but sometimes the answer isn't as good as you hoped.

My mystery senses are tingling now, I've been dreaming up a snow-set mystery for a while now but I've kept it quiet. I might work it out a bit more and post it soonish. Snow footprints are a staple of the genre. I did one, fuck, must be a year ago now, with Battler dying in the middle of a snow field, with only his footprints leading up to his body. People came up with some amazing theories. It's more than the isolated island theme, it's about creating a scenario where a murder has happened, yet the culprit "couldn't possibly" have gotten away without leaving footprints, and that fascinates me.

All this snowy mountain lodge, owl stuff reminds me of Rim of the Pit which is a fantastic novel with more or less the same setting, but with a really disappointing solution, for the footprints in general. The other mysteries in the novel are great, but the footprints part made me roll my eyes, because it's literally the first thing you think of.

I dunno, I'm mostly interested in information play. Stuff like Tanako's death in Higurashi, for example. When you're given informations that you suppose is correct, or when the survivors are divided between two groups and find informations that reveal things to you, the player, but you know that they have to survive and meet to figure the thing out. Fucking with the player and the characters, to make it short. Probably extremely difficult.

Another thing that the anime butchered. In the game, they often mention how impossible Takano's death is, while in the anime, they just accept it. That got me coming up with a wrong theory, that there was a doppelganger.

To continue, while playing with informations and hints are fun, there's always the risk of the player figuring out things way too quickly and becoming annoyed with the characters.
I remember being annoyed by both Battler from Umineko and Naegi from Danganronpa when they failed to understand basic stuff. Same with the Ace Attorney games, sometimes you figure out stuff that's pretty simple, but the game's design forces you to get the answer wrong or to find a roundabound way to explain it.

That reminds me of Zack from Satsuriku no tenshi. I'm been quite obsessed about him lately. It's from a RPG horror game, I like it alot. Battler decided that he wanted to show Maria a magic trick, so he had everything prepared before coming to the island. While the older females are generally accepted to be well-endowed in all works, younger looking characters like Maria, Dlanor, Erika, Bern, and Lambda have all been portrayed with varying figures by different artists, since the original work didn't make their proportions explicitly clear.

Episode 8's manga made Erika and Bernkastel appear significantly curvier than they did in any of the other ones, with the possible exception Erika's wedding appearance in Episode 6's manga. On the other hand, Lambda was given a slightly smaller chest than before, while Maria and Dlanor remained presumably flat since they are usually depicted as such.

You mean in the different mangas? Not at all, I enjoyed all of them being Soichirou, Aki Taka and Suzuki Jirou my favorites ones. Personally, the only time I feel the manga may have taken the fanservice a bit too far was with the cover illustration for the first volume of Episode 8 (the one with Ange’s upskirt). It wasn't the first time Ange’s rear was unnecessarily focused on, with prior Episodes frequently sneaking in a bunch of low-angle shots of her from behind, but it was never done to such an extent nor was it ever so blatant. Plus it’s one thing to do something like that in the manga itself, but going so far as to put it on the front cover of the first volume is way more questionable. Now the first impression readers are going to get isn’t going to be “Oh boy, it’s time to start the final Episode” but instead “Why isn't Ange wearing any underwear”.

I admire Ryukishi's work on Umineko and how he incorporated stands of philosophy and metaphysics into a deconstuction of the mystery genre while including shounen battle themes. It's really unique in how it's both a really smart piece of post-postmodernism, yet is accessible to the general audience who like to see characters fight using magical/fantastical abilities.

I've scoured the world for any kind of literature like it, but never found anything. Umineko deserves a lot more praise and recognition that it gets.

In all honesty, I never intended to pretend to be more intellectual or whatever it is you're implying.

Just expressing my thoughts on how I find Umineko is a real, unique work that grabs inspiration from the genre itself, as well as philosophy and metaphysical questions. Something very rarely found in your average VN, anime, manga, LN or whatever.

I have no idea why I've sparked this antagonism from you. You can either agree, or far more interestingly, disagree and come up with with own views and opinions. Instead you're playing some kind of pretentious character which you seem to think is what I'm doing.

Obviously it's not perfect, as I've stated before. I just like what Ryukishi did with Umineko, which other works haven't done as of yet. It was original, and a great blend of genres and ideas.

Looking back at the anime OP, there's actually a lot of focus on Shannon. Breaking the mirrror with tears in her eyes, her date with George and stuff. Going by the direction of the anime it doesn't look like Ryu-chan gave them any information about the culprit so it seems to be a coincidence, but she's really the character with the most screen time of anyone in the OP
