When I'm learning a kanji, all I need is the kunyomi, onyumi and the general english meaning right? I just need to memorize it and see it being used in an actual conversation to see what context it's used in

I wouldn't advise studying readings in isolation, since you'll pick them up naturally from exposure, and a lot of kanji are hard to assign an English meaning to (or have multiple/imprecise meanings). Just learn common words that use the kanji.

There are two approaches to learning kanji

Learn through vocabulary compounds by reading

Study in isolation with a mnemonic system (Remembering the Kanji, Kanji Learner's Course)

A mnemonic course will make the kanji really stick in your head and help prevent you from mixing up similar characters in the future. If you want to write, it's also very helpful. If you are taking this approach, the best way to do it is Heisig's divide and conquer---do mnemonics for the 常用漢字 and then move on with your life. Basically only focus on beating those 2000 characters into your brain, and then when you are done you don't have to worry about it anymore and can move on with your studies and learning vocab. I'm doing that with KLC right now, just focusing on the mnemonics and writing and ignoring the vocabulary component. I'm doing 50-100 characters a day now and will hopefully be done within a month. I've found already that having a clear picture of the kanji in my brain, as well as it's component particles, massively improves my retention and ability to learn new words quickly.

Learning readings, however, is something you should only do through vocabulary. Memorizing the on and kun yomi readings is a waste of energy as you will naturally acquire them as you read and develop your knowledge.

There's more you didn't mention, which is what I did, and would advise people against in light of my experience doing it.

I took the KKLC book, ignored the mnemonics (because the ones in the book are just shit and I didn't like the idea of having stupid stories associated with all the kanji in any case), and just focused on the meanings given for each kanji. I went through the 'course' at a pace of 20 characters a day (which, in retrospect, I think was too fast), making flashcards in Anki for them. For new characters, I simply wrote them out once while taking note of their meaning, then made a flashcard for them and reviewed them an hour later in Anki (along with the other kanji reviews scheduled for that day). When reviewing the kanji in Anki, my goal was to simply write out the character once when prompted by the keyword. It took me just under 4 months to finish.

I came to two unfortunate realisations a month or two later though.

1). Using English keywords/meanings for the kanji is a horrible idea. There are literally hundreds of kanji which mean virtually (or exactly) the same thing in English as at least one other kanji, which means you start mixing them all up. I've seen even people who used mnemonics complaining about this problem. Some examples:
塀、屏、柵、垣 - all "fence"
尋 and 伺 are both "inquire", while 糾 is "inquire into"
捕 and 捉 are both "catch", while 握 and 掴 mean "grasp" and 奪 means "seize"
索 means "search", while 探 means "probe, look for", 捜 means "look for", 査 means "look into", 覧 means "look over" and 視 means "look at"

This is just the tip of the iceberg. It's a fucking nightmare.

2). If you don't learn actual words the characters are used to write, they just start to drop like flies out of your long term (~2+ month) memory. Some time after finishing the deck, my retention, all of a sudden, started to plummet, and it was my supposedly mature cards which were the cause. I went from 95-98% retention every day very quickly down to ~85%, then ~75% and then ~65%. That was overall retention though; my mature retention went all the way down to 50%. What I noticed though was that the problem wasn't so bad for kanji where I knew words written with them, but for kanji which I didn't it started getting really bad.

After that experience, I dropped the deck because it just seemed hopeless to continue it.

I think that, if you're going to do rote, you've got to do it like a native. That is, when a native learns kanji, they are simply learning to write words which they already know. So instead of learning 水 as "water", for instance, you should instead first learn the word "みず" and then go from there and learn that 水 is how you write "みず".

Natives of Japan (and China, where many more characters are in common use) don't use mnemonics, so it must be possible to learn kanji (hanzi) without them, but the way I went about it was clearly deeply flawed.

I finished KKLC, so 2299 kanji (one of the "kanji" taught in KKLC is not a kanji). I think there were 3 kanji in KKLC which were taught as their traditional variants for some bizarre reason, so I learned the modern jouyou forms of those two, and then I learned 2 extra kanji (I was really hesitant about adding extra kanji to the deck before I felt like I'd "mastered" the current ones). I am using Firefox ESR 52 and will be using it for a long time. I'm sure some others are doing the same. The 2 newer versions don't work on 52, but the old one does. Is it possible to change the compatibility so that Firefox will actually let people download it?

Luckily I had a backup from several months ago, so I could copy the old XPI file, but others probably aren't so lucky.

Mnemonics. If I additionally know at least one reading (usually when I know a word that has it), I go with "Easy".

Watch out, those traditional ones are certified as "normal form" by the Ministry of Education (with the simplified form allowed as a variant). There were two of them (or maybe three? I know there was 呑 instead 吞, the first one is a hyougai), one of them is 塡 (simplified variant form 填 - not jouyou) and I can't remember the second one. I mined both traditional forms and simplified forms. When I add a new kanji - I usually add variants as well. Also, the ones with borders in the "Probably Chinese" section are the CJK Compatibility Ideographs - the grid addon hides them by default. They usually vary by one or two strokes.

I'm not really concerned with filling in lists, so much. My goal right now is just learning whatever happens to show up in my reading. If I fill out the jouyou or jinmeiyou lists in doing so, that would be nice, but I'm not deliberately aiming for it or anything.

Though like I say, I'm still unsure about what approach to take from here. I know for a fact that mnemonics will be a complete waste of time for several hundred kanji which I solidly know without issue or only ever had problems with because of mixing them up with other kanji with similar/the same English keywords when reviewing them in Anki. It also feels weird after learning so many characters through rote to all of a sudden start using mnemonics for the others. It's going to create this weird split in my knowledge between rote-learned kanji and mnemonic-learned kanji.

I think from here on out I'm going to try the native approach and just learn kanji for words I know. Learn a word - learn to write it. Like that. I think. I'm also thinking of adding in readings as I learn them, but maybe I'll have a separate deck for that. I dunno.


Oh, another problem I forgot to mention before is the order in which kanji are taught in these mnemonic systems. That fucked me up big time. Teaching a bunch of kanji in a row which are all written with, for example, the 貝 radical on the right just led to them all blending together in my memory, and I was still mixing them up even a month after first learning them.

Regarding mnemonics: if I see a conflicting one I usually look up words containing them and look at the differences in usage. There usually are some and I try to separate them as much as I can, sometimes even using actual words they're in as mnemonics.

I had a similar plan: I wanted to create a deck with words, using every kanji I have in my primary deck for every reading I know of (for example, こ is not usually listed as a reading for 木, but it is used in e.g. 木匠). This way I could learn the readings without associating sounds with kanji, but instead with meanings - which was the way I've been learning everything else.

I'm also trying to get as many kanji as I can, because I actually like them. The way they are constructed, the way they change in variant forms, the way they are used in edgy LNs/VNs instead of regular ones and so on. That's why I keep a separate deck for them. I'm still waiting for the Unicode Consortium to add missing kokuji into the set. After that I'll probably compile Anki myself, as there is a problem with 4-byte UCS on the default Windows build (Python supporting 2-byte ones by default) and I can't get higher Unicode planes to appear properly on the grid. And they are stupidly shifted to the left when rendered on the card, because Anki thinks it's actually two characters instead of one. You can't have 'em all, I guess.

Steve Kaufmann says he learned 4000 hanzi in 8 months, well enough to take a written exam to test his knowledge of them, long before RTK was ever a thing.

The way software torrents often work is that Chinks crack the software, then Russians package it into a torrent.

obviously i don't think 254 means is a lot or means anything, but in any other language the numbers are the first, easiest words that you remember after the first day or two, not ones you have trouble with after weeks every time you encounter them

I don't know enough words to read and no reading = the only practice outside of anki is seeing kanji sometimes flash on screen during anime = no memory reinforcement = failure of the same word every few days

in anime with numbers you usually see them as "700円" or so so it's not like that helps anyway

That's a completely made up bullshit number. The average native reader in English, where there are a lot of unnecessary word divisions, reads at around 200 words per minute. This isn't "hurr 50 percentile" average, it's the normal 2/3rds of people.

Looking up grammar is hard but if you've internalized Tae Kim you should be able to read if you can deal with not understanding everything. Mostly you just want to power through it and read as much as possible, don't sweat it if you can't parse every sentence perfectly.

Yes. ば is used for general truths (there's a lot to say about how to define "general truth", but just take it however it feels right), and you can't make conditional statements about general truths in the past unless it's about something counterfactual (the general truth that X happened in the past) or habitual (the general truth that X used to happen habitually).

The "review forgotten cards" option in custom study is fine. Don't use "review ahead" or force reviews with the "by card state or tag" option unless you're actually cramming for an upcoming test.
Doing so will increase retention in the short term, without doing anything for long term retention, while expending a lot of time.

If you want more help for new cards, you can increase the steps for new cards and lapses in the deck options.
Still, your memory is probably a lot better than you expect, just give it a chance. Failing cards with Anki is normal, the algorithm is designed to minimize the amount of reviews necessary to still remember most of the material when it's due.

Start by rewatching shows with simpler settings/stories that you've already seen. If there's any romance, SoL, haremshit, whatever that doesn't have a complicated plot or complicated dialogue, just rewatch that.

If you can find reliable Japanese subs (like ones on the BD or the ones from Kitsunekko that are the official broadcast closed captioning rather than the chinese fansubs), watch some shows with those to help ease you into it.

Expose yourself to as much listening practice as you can, even if it's something you don't understand very much of. Those little commentary radio show / interview things anime sometimes have? Lets plays (実況プレイ) on youtube/nico? Random shit you find on the internet? Listen to those in the background while doing stuff and try to piece together as much of it as you can. If you usually have some sort of video/audio when going to sleep, make it something that's in Japanese.

Over time while doing those things, try to slowly introduce subless shows you haven't seen, and assuming you still use subs for your seasonal anime, try to ease into it by doing more of your shows each season without subs. Try as many of your shows as you can without subs before calling it quits, because some shows are surprisingly easy for their setting and some are surprisingly hard for their setting. If you continue watching any shows with subs, if the subs don't seem shitty, then still try your best to understand the lines (understanding the Japanese in the lines itself, only using the subs to fill in vocab gaps or help with possible hearing issues making out the sounds).

If you're reading a VN and you're feeling a bit lazy, try to *just* listen to the voice line instead of trying to keep up with the voice as you read. Sometimes it might just click for you.

Most Japanese manga & e-book websites require an app to access your digital library.

I can do LNs via amazon and kindle, but manga looks bad on there so I buy it physically.

For the physical store I use honto.jp, and they often have free digital manga volumes. They don't have a reader for linux though, only for windows ios and android.
Lately they also sometimes have an in-browser reader instead of an application. I hope this trend continues.
