Yukari could do her job just as easily if not even easier but Reimu exists to make the humans happy. Her role is less peacekeeper and more human representative against the youkai threat (whom she is still on good terms with) so that the humans don't think they are completely controlled by youkai and instead have Reimu to fight against them. Honestly, they don't have a bad deal. They're mortal and aren't born powerful, but they're assured complete safety from youkai by Reimu and from nature itself by the youkai. They're legitimately safer in the human village than a human in our real world. This entire deal is explained in FS. Humans and youkai live in a symbiotic relationship, and if one of the symbiotes goes away, the other one does as well. Reimu's job is to make sure that neither side fails. If a human changes their role in a way that would cause other humans to change their roles as well, Reimu exterminates them. If a youkai ignores the rules regarding the human village or disobeys spell card rule, Reimu exterminates them. It goes both ways.

There's a fundamental flaw in all these arguments about Gensokyo natives: they assume that the natives have some problem with the arrangement. They don't. They're perfectly fine with it. Though they fear youkai, they also party with them and go where they're not supposed to often. They're adventurous. They're peaceful. They're countryfolk who know about advanced technology but don't want or need it. They do not care, and they don't want things to change. When there was a small group clamoring about youkai oppression, everyone else thought those people were being stupid. There's an article on that specific case in, I believe, BAiJR.

So, what does Reimu do for the humans in Gensokyo? She maintains what they consider "normal". Yuuka might also be a dimension hopper, if PC-98 is still somewhat canon, so there's plenty we don't know about her. That said, my personal theory based off that same game (PoFV) is that Yuuka is actually a transcended fairy. Shiki Eiki warns Cirno in her route that if she continues to grow too powerful, she will eventually become a youkai and thus mortal. In Yuuka's route, we learn that she's mortal but she's lived too long. Her power is also extremely fairy-like, as fairies can cause flowers to bloom. If she used to be a fairy like Cirno, obsessed with power, it makes a lot of sense to me that she'd eventually become a youkai and lose her immortality. She's also just as whimsical and prone to "teasing"/"pranks" as a fairy. Okina also talks about how when she saw Cirno in stage 6 she thought she was witnessing the start of a new era with this stupidly overpowered fairy. If Yuuka's really fucking old, maybe another era had started with her.

We've gotten a pretty extensive look at Gensokyo in the side works, with Akyuu touring the place, and I think it'd be odd for her to neglect mentioning a portal to the netherworld behind the shrine and a lake of blood. Even an empty spot for a lake would be something everyone could see, like a crater, but there's none. There's just misty lake.

And frankly I always find it fucking bizarre that some fans cling to "WELL MAYBE IT'S THERE" when ZUN himself tried to wipe the slate clean, tries not to bring up PC-98, only said "if it doesn't contradict I guess it's canon" after actual years of pestering, and doesn't sell the games even though it would be a simple matter to do so. For me, I think she can make somebody as powerful as she wants, but I don't know if she can do it to herself. Still, being a sage probably implies that she is at least as strong as Kasen who is an oni or even as strong as Yukari. Also, she seems to be the closest thing Gensokyo has to a "traditional" god in a sense that she is plenty of things according to her backstory. You can say she's the most godlike-god in a similar way Yukari is the most Youkai-like-youkai. But do note that this is my opinion and ZUN will probably take it all down anyway with a magazine article or a manga chapter.

Okina is a really weak design on her own. ZUN would have pushed her either way, like he did with Yukari. And then he'd have introduced the top tier design that is Yukari in a later game, making her instantly popular. The Maribel theory would also be much more impactful.

He isn't suppose to be worshipped generally, he is the temple guard so he doesn't get his own temple. That's what makes him a "hidden" god. There are some other deities that are also suppose to be him, and they are worshipped, but Matarajin just isn't worshipped himself.

Interestingly there WAS a Matarajin Temple once. Apparently they became obsessed with life and death, and tried to study the cycle. But at some point it turned into a rather strange sect that had people started ritually FUCKING the head priestess, right in the middle of the temple.

At some point the entire sect was classified as Buddhist Heresy and shut down. The scriptures they used were confiscated and burnt, and the entire sect later officially got banned.

It is also a plotpoint that the sub weapon by default is designed for EX. If you tried to play EX with standard season sub weapons it would have been impossible other than Spring. (Spring and/or Reimu has seeker shots that can fire backwards)

Normally what happens is that your choice of weapon can make your EX run harder. But in this case everyone get a good custom sub weapon that shoots backwards.

Reimu still likely get an advantage though, as her normal shot isn't wasted because it can help kill enemies coming from below.
