Just like an infection, I began when I heard Bad Apple, then didn't care about it for years, and then a friend made me play a whole load of touhou songs in osu!
After that it kinda got my attention and I completed EoSD in Lunatic but didn't find it worth to do so in the other games.

When: Like 8 years ago.

How: A friend of mine shared this vid. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji88FmxemAs )to me asking me to find the game for him. So I googled "Hard shoot them up games" and I found a vid of Touhou 11.
Then I downloaded itm and played it and shared it to that friend but he didn't like.

The History Channel had a multiplayer game based on their show "Shootout" about 12-13 years ago. I met a neo nazi on their servers the night it went live. Anyway this guy had all these sprays of (what I would later learn to be) Reimu in Third Reich outfits, reading Mein Kampf to schoolkids, killing Soviets etc . I dl'd the games via proxy/ftp from his server and started playing (I already had most of the locale settings from my other gook games already)

tl;dr from a neo nazi on the history channel multiplayer shootout nascar fan irc channel.

I got into Touhou April of last year. A friend of mine has long been into it and I decided to finally bite the bullet. Played everything, read ALMOST everything (all the manga except SSiB at least), loved it. It turned out much better than I'd been thinking. I was apprehensive since I suck at STGs and thought Touhou was all yuri and basically a bunch of fan stuff had muddled my impressions.

I think it was around 2009. I was really into overly difficult games like IWTBTG, Contra, and perhaps most pertinently: Ikaruga. A friend of mine told me there was a game that was like Ikaruga but with even more bullets, and it also had cute waifus and awesome music. Started with the PC-98 games and played through the whole series-- honestly I wasn't really hooked until EoSD. Been a fan ever since, and it's always been a niche thing me and that friend can bond over.

I've probably been "aware" of Touho since 10 years ago when I first started browsing 4chan (first contact was probably on /a/ and random hentai doujins).

However, it wasn't until November last year that I started plowing through the games and all the official print works. I'm currently somewhere around ULiL. Started coming to /jp/ around February this year.

It's not about how long you've known about Touhou.

It's about what you've done in that time frame.

Some people who have know about Touhou for a year know more and/or have done more than some people who've known about it for 10+ years.

Instead of discussing how LONG, we should be discussing how WIDE.

Wrapped up high school. Moved out for uni.
Got about a year in. Went for another year abroad. Ran out of money, moved back in with parents, finished my BA.
Moved out again for Master's. Finished Master's.
Got a job. Got really sick of the job. Went NEET.
Still NEET four months later, but things are looking up. Time will show.

In the course of the above, wrote several novels' worth of shitty 2hu fiction, all the while neglecting the dream of publishing a real novel.
Helped translate/proof some (non-H) doujins.
Got a few good people into the series.
Went and picked up a few non-/jp/-related hobbies to fill the nihilistic void.

Started out as a Reimufag. Transitioned to being infatuated with Renko. Then to loving Mokou. Then to adoring MONONOBE NO FUTO. Thought preference had stabilised. Suddenly became an obnoxious Sekimaniac about a year back for no good rhyme or reason.
That said, Reimu's always been #1 in my sorters all those years. Others fluctuated, but stayed nearby the top. I briefly bought into the CP meme, but this has since passed.

Ate cheese pizza tonight.

My non-hu fiction is fairly normal, actually, if by normalcy we assume the exclusion of girls and frills. The issue is that my original fiction doesn't keep me motivated. 'Hu fiction, for some reason, does. I've come, over the years, to delusionally hold this reason to be shared love.

"Selfish" is the first word I'd use to describe myself normally (OK, maybe after "prone to rambling"), but I'm an entertainer at core. I write to please. And the plain, dry, abrasive matter of the fact is, my 'hu fiction has brought more entertainment and more pleasure to more people than anything original of mine ever has.

I don't know about you, but I have days where I get a feeling of clarity and mild depression. The kind where you almost feel like you're watching what you're doing from a third person perspective and you don't approve of it. I think about how dumb this is and how I ought to be doing something else. It's on those days that it's most important to persevere. I know even then in the back of my mind that these days pass and I'll be thankful I toughed it out. It was a tough lesson, but I eventually learned (intuitively, not just as a warning given by others) that discipline is needed when motivation fails. I don't believe there's ever been a person who accomplished anything of note that didn't have days like this. They all had the discipline keep at it.

Writing is one of the very few extroverted aspects of my particular blend of traits, so "discipline" doesn't work when there is no one to show the effects of my work to. "Why should I wear my keyboard down on this, when I can write a Sekistory (snnnrrk) and make a lot of people happier, faster?" That's more or less how it goes. More more than less, actually, now I've put it into words. Ironic how that works.

In my case it was more (maybe less?) complicated. My dad had pressured me into continuing my studies, going so far as offering to pay a part of my rent if I wanted to move out. After getting my Master's, I found out he'd been recipient of suspiciously generous tax exemptions/returns as long as I'd stayed registered as a full-time student.

Now that I think about it, all those IOSYS flash videos on /f/ were probably more influential than /a/. Like for most underage b&s, it was all /b/ and /f/ in the beginning.

Also, my closest friend which I've always spent tons of time with goes through periods where he listens to everything there is in a certain genre or category of music. Occasionally would see Reimu and comment on how cute the girl looked. 2013, Osu. Played a shitload of IOSYS and Halozy, and to this day they're still 2 of my favorites, despite basic. I don't play the games as much as I should but I enjoy them a lot, despite only being able to play normal, and rarely making to the end anyway.

I'm just obsessed over Touhou music circles nowadays, an unhealthy amount of yuri doujin and Touhou cutesy stuff. I enjoy reading about their backstories.

you mean "the internet used to be for upper-middle-class people, but the barrier of entry went down and now all the poor people are using it and they have their fucking poor person problems"?

Keeping in mind that poor is synonymous with black in America and muslim in Europe, of course.

Can't say for sure, but my guess is that the easier it became for people to upload stuff to the Internet, the more comfortable people got with posting drama, politics, and neurotypical pop culture.

One thing is when the internet was smaller it seemed much much bigger. low speed, wacky search engines (that would all return vastly different sometimes useless results for any given search) and community density made online communities seem like bunkers in a huge massive world. The sea change started with the rise of user friendly IM services..msn..icq..yahoo etc and things like myspace.

It's not as much poverty that is the problem, as is the know-how which used to serve as said barrier of entry. It used to be the Internet was something of an exclusive medium - not because of hardware pricing (computers with Ethernet functionality have not been a rarity since the 90s), as the skills required to connect to, and operate, the pre-search-engine-era web.

Contrast that to these days, when not only has physical set-up been simplified by way of the 801.1 wireless standard and spread of compatible hardware (which is indubitably easier to connect to), but search engines and aggregators have made it a breeze for even an unskilled, uninitiated Internet newbie to move about pretty much unhindered. They won't be looking up Todd's posts from Usenet days, or skimming the surface of the Dark Web and calling themselves l33t h4x0rz, but what entry-level browsing is allowed by Google and social media isn't going to stump your average normalfag anymore.

And yes, 4chan is entry-level in terms of access and operation as well.

I have a friend who's a die-hard fan of fighting games and he ordered IaMP back in 2005 along with a copy of Melty blood react. It was fun for about a month but after that, I stopped giving a shit until spring 2006 when I heard about the official games and that there were translations available for them. I didn't have much experience with danmaku games other than Ikaruga and Dodonpachi on consoles back then, needless to say that Touhou refueled my interest in the genre.

I've known about Touhou since the mid to late 2000s, admittedly through the EoSD extra everyone was raving about. It never really got to me until it was about SA, I think, where the Okuu boss fight and theme impressed me. But the real reason was something silly. I've read this H-doujin about Akyuu and found it to be really sad but interesting and want to find out more about the lore and the rest was just me finding out the countless tidbits about the story, characters and the limitless fanworks.

It started with a friend talking up Umineko and then going off topic by sharing this:

So it had to be around 2010. From there I was jumping around Youtube until I figured out it was a game and then I jumped right in. Now Touhou is present in every facet of my life in one way or another.

>>17429038 here. I've never heard that question before and that's interesting.
Touhou history:
I've 1cc'd 2 to 12 at least once on Lunatic and 1cc'd 1 to 15 at least once on Normal and 1cc'd all the Extras.
I've never attempted LNMNB or scoring.
It took me about 2 months to get my first 1cc Normal after I began playing my first official Touhou game: EoSD.
It took me a year to get my first 1cc Lunatic and it was on PCB. EoSD was too hard for me back then.
PCB is my favorite game of the franchise due to it's comfiness level and the nostalgia. I usually revisit it when I'm feeling nostalgic or drunk (usually both).

Personal life:
Had a shit job.
Got wrongfully fired for triggering an obese cunt with a masturbation joke.
NEET for about 3 months.
Got paid to back to school.
Worked as a data compiling assistant for 6 months while studying.
Finished school after 1 year and a half and got a trade and 2 specializations.
Worked in my trade sector for 9 years.
Had 2 girlfriends during that timeline.
>Present day
Lost my job because no more work in the job sector.
Going back to school in 2 weeks.

Anxiety is kind of setting in pretty hard. I haven't felt like this in a while.

This trend has been established since the mid sixties. Marshall McLuhan pointed out that technological changes to media do more to alter society than the content transmitted or created by those media.

Over the past decade the web has been shifting in two major directions in terms of user functionality:
1. Ease of use --- we've gone from a web where minor coding skills were required to produce readable content to where the only mental labour required is installing an app, signing up for an account and then thinking a thought. Many people don't even really do that last step and just rip off other people. Even during the livejournal days integrating graphics into a text post was cumbersome and video hosting was a pain in the ass. Beyond attracting a more dedicated and educated audience, forcing users to perform that extra work creates time for people to think over what they wrote. Whenever I wrote a post, I almost always added some nuance while fiddling with the BBcode or finding a picture to hotlink to.
2. Incentive of feedback --- This change is a lot more subtle, but larger web audiences mean that it's a lot easier for anyone to make a post that is seen by a large audience. This is made potent by content integration, both within and across platforms. Your Google account is connected to your Facebook account which is then connected to your Twitter, Instagram, etc. This all makes finding the content you want easy, and makes saving and sharing easy as well. Meanwhile we also get instant response metrics in the form of likes, reblogs, retweets, and so on. Even 4chan has an indirect like function in the form of (You)s and links to replies built in to a post. All of these responses give us little shots of dopamine, wants us craving more (You)s. Remember when the site administration tried to remove (You) from replies? The site threw a conniption fit and they put it back.

All of this combined allows even the most normal of neurotypicals to figure out what posts people want and then alter their future posts accordingly by finding such content without much effort. Usually by making more lewd posts or shitposts, since people are attracted to controversy or polarizing opinions or titties.

Is this all bad? No. The insular web communities of yore were also prone to constant drama and web 2.0 has cut down on that, mostly by just drowning out drama in a sea of content.

I don't think it really means much, since people who are dedicated still exist. As long as they are mindful of web 2.0 background static they can still have informative conversations.

Cont. Personally I think 4chan itself would benefit if it did the following three things:
1. Make (You)s and reply links opt in. We shouldn't let new users think these functions are normal. It encourages people to post for replies, not because they want to write good posts.
2. Add a preview function. People could write a post and then hit a Preview button that would make the post show up in the thread without actually being posted. This would help since it's a lot easier to catch errors or discrepancies as posts in the thread than as a block of text in the post field.
3. Remind people that sage exists through the header banners and educate them on its proper use (as a polite gesture when making simple or off-topic replies).

I cannot remember exactly how long ago was I first exposed, but a definite time I can remember is when the Eirin Medic TF2 skin was released, although I was exposed to 2hu a much longer time before that.
I had a disdain for all and any weeb crap until October 2010 when I started reading Jojo out of curiosity for oldschool 4chan. Then I wanted to read Rozen Maiden and somehow mixed between the two after watching this shit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLiyglcRcCA

Not long after that I had a nostalgia drive for SHMUPs (especially Strikers 1945 II) and stumbled upon this video, and again I mistaken Touhou "Project Shrine Maiden" for "Rozen Maiden".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg

The music, gameplay, and cast were so mesmerizing and cute that I just downloaded the games regardless of my error or previous hate for weeb stuff. Thus, I first started playing on January 2011, cleared EoSD no continues normal within 2 weeks.

Sadly to this day I haven't read or watched Rozen Maiden

This song. Followed by searching up the original song and clicking related videos until I fell in love with the music.

Then I downloaded the games and the rest is history.

2008-2009 which was like... 8-9 years ago. So many years has passed, and yet how little have I improved as a person.

Now I just wait, and hoping that 門門Hong門門 or !ZunBar return or Suigning, I don't know. I just want to go back.

Sometime around 2009-2010. I've watched the McRoll'd video years prior and realized the song came from a game series called Touhou Project, but being a dumbass kid who wasn't too resourceful, I never figured I could download all the games online for free and apply English patches to them without the FBI knocking down my door and giving me jail time for life. I started with EoSD because it was the first Windows game/it's where the McRoll'd song came from, but I'm pretty sure I was bouncing between TH6-8 and 10 during the first week I was playing the games

Fucking this. I'm kind of afraid seeing people gush about their lives. I like Touhou, but Jesus Christ, I don't think getting into it was a fucking life changing experience or anything

I've played all the Windows mainline games (excluding 9, fuck 9)
1CCs on Normal for 6-8, 10-11 (TH11 seriously took me 4 years of on and off play, fuck that shit), 12.8, and 15 Pointdevice
Working on a Hard 1CC in anything I've already 1CC'd on Normal, basically no progress on that front
Can get 63% through Extra stage on PCB
Have cosplayed Touhou at anime cons

When I discovered Touhou and other doujin shooters, I was playing other STGs since a decade ago. Then, I stumbled on danmaku titles, like DDP (pic).
