I want to start listening to more jap music, as of now, all I know are animoo OP and ED songs and bands.

Bands/artists I know I enjoy include:
Orange Range
UVERworld
Flow
T.M. Revolution
Tommy Heavenly6
Nakagawa Shouko
Whoever does the fucking OP for Kannagi and the OP and ED of Toradora.

You get the idea. I'm really not just some shounenfag (as I'm sure it appears), we're talking about music here, not animoo. But what other J-Rock/J-Pop do you guys think I'll like?

Most good Jpop doesn't exist in the form of bands that write their own material, but (possibly) famous singer+studio musicians performing somebody else's work.

Anyhoo, I get all my Jpop by listening to Internet radio stations, waiting until I hear something I like, and then downloading the appropriate album/OST/whatever.

uhhh guren lagan OP was pretty standard jpop by Shokotan.
Soul Eater op (op1, at least, I don't know what they are now) is more of a pop rock.

I'd say check out pop standards like YUI, yuki, ayaka, and anime/seiyuu artists like Minori Chihara, Nana Mizuki, anything from I'VE (kotoko, mell, kawada mami)

For rock I'd look for stuff by afromania, GO!GO!7188, janne de arc, abdingon boy's school

I'm also obliged to mention JAM Project, Shimotsuki Haruka, santara, and Sound Horizon.

Not because they're similar to anything you like, but just because they're awesome.

This.

It's the only j-music I've heard so far that I considered good enough to download besides the soundtrack of the .hack anime, and the lyrics for that are in english so it's kind of half&half.
Though I will admit that I haven't watched as much animu as some of you chums, but I've seen enough to know that anime music is usually mid tier at best.

But you're not looking for anime music so this is all besides the point.
Avoid the j-pop.
At least some of it anyway.

This reminds me of my ipod dilemma.

I work in a warehouse overnight, and we have a radio that's powerful enough to play the contents of anyone's mp3 player for our workers. Anyone can generally hook theirs up whenever they want. Our numbers are small enough that we can maintain a loose rotation.

Unfortunately, my playlist has stuff on it from anime and videogames. They're not in the majority, but it's enough that, if I ever intend to hook it up to the radio, I have to sort them out of the playlist or move the files back to my hard drive before work.

As a result, I've gotten a lot more used to pop culture and a lot more squeamish about my private hobbies. As the days go by, it gets harder to indulge, even when there's noone around to judge me.

I'm at the point where I'm sitting on a cultural fence and I don't know which way to lean.

It's like everyday of my life. Back when I was in 7th grade the only TV that wasn't facing a window was in my brother's room so I would sneak in when he was asleep to watch Trigun. I got paranoid after doing that and when I finally did get my own TV I had it facing a corner in my room and I would only watch anime with my door locked.

One day I had forgotten I had a mirror behind me for whatever reason and I had left my door unlocked. My brother came in and saw my watching Inuyasha; he asked why I was watching that, I made up some horrible excuse and told him to get out. From that day onward I wouldn't watch anime when people were home. I'm still the same way all these years later. I don't watch anime unless I'm home alone. A side effect of this is that I center my life around anime. Whenever I'm home alone, I do NOTHING but watch anime because I never know when I'll get another opportunity to. I may want to play the vidya, study for class, or finish up some work but if no one else is around I just can't bring myself to do it.

It's just the sensible thing to do. When you leave 4chan and go out into society it's a completely different world.

What do you think a bunch of guys in a warehouse want to listen to? Yoko Kanno, or Collective Soul? This Illusion, or Everlong?

Part of growing up is knowing what you have to omit about yourself to fit in to a given social network. That, and of course accepting that sometimes you just have to put some value in fitting in.

It's generally not a good idea to try to inject your interests into your peers. There are better battles to be fought, and this one will lead you to ostracization.

Notice I did not quote the guy in the werehouse. That's another thing entirely-- of course he shouldn't play weeaboo music there, besides the fact that he'd risk getting laughed at it's not a style that most people listen to, he'd probably get a similar response if he put on an Italian opera or something.

I'm talking about people who are afraid to watch in their own home. For gods sake, are your parents going to beat you if they find out you watch anime or something? If you can't trust the people close to you to accept, or at least not care, about your interests, then you need to find new people to get close to.

Generally, otaku aren't in financial control of their residence. If the property owner tells you to keep the noise down, family or not, you keep the noise down.

Being entertained by yourself is simple, but with a normalfag in the room, the air grows heavy with shame, as you're waiting for the inevitable questions such as "why are you watching cartoons of little girls in skirts" and "when are you ever going to get laid" to be launched.

Even if they never come audibly, you know what they're thinking, and there's no explanation for it. They're right to pressure you with these kinds of questions.

Details of the content aside, it is escapism.

There's nothing wrong with anime anymore than any other form of entertainment.

There's also no reason you should assume people will see it that way, nor should you try to make them see it that way.

A fact of life is that people will discriminate against you for whatever reason, whether it be the color of your skin or your hobbies. Society will only be on your side for one of those. Don't waste energy thinking how it "should be". Make up hobbies and live your life hiding your real ones. You'll get plenty of fulfilling social interaction over the internet.
