The links all over the internet are almost all just the PS3 version.
Also, any hybrid version featuring the voice acting of the PS3 version with the original graphics? That would be even better.

Depend on your interpretation of Umineko. A perfectly valid interpretation is that some guys decided to write novels, and they projected themselves into those books, and Bernkastel is a cat. Not a talking cat, just a simple, perfectly normal black cat the authors wanted to throw in the story.

Perfectly valid explanation. Power level of Bernkastel: a cat.

Another valid explanation is that Bernkastel represents a concept, more appropriately the concept of miracle, and can manipulate it freely. This is closely tied to the best youkai/gods of Gensokyo. Bernkastel would be roughly equal to a very good youkai/Yukari in power. From a mid-fantasy perspective, Bernkastel is the second most powerful character in Umineko and roughly equal to Yukari.

Universe would be more accurate, though I think it's more along the lines of each book containing a complete "story" rather than an actual physical realm. Think of it like each book representing a different anime or manga series, each with their own setting.

The protagonists of some of these stories even serve as Featherine's honor guard, taking the form of giant cats as a sign of respect.

Edit anon here again. In the last thread I mentioned that I was going to be scanning some seacats doujinshi I recently bought. Well, the 3 I initially showed have now been scanned, so next up is cleaning. In the meantime, a few more doujinshi just came in the mail today, So I'll probably get to work scanning them as well sometime in the near future.

This might sound weird but does anyone know what episode it is where Beatrice gets flustered during a debate with Battler and makes a weird "watatota" noise? It's during a part where Ronove is arguing for her I think.

I've been looking for it and I can't remember if it's Episode 3 and she's acting weird because Battler's angry over the EvaBeatrice thing or it's Episode 4 and she's acting weird because she thought Battler was depressed after Ep3.

It's obvious that Featherine is an actual witch that exists above the real world fragments and can manipulate them to some extent. She literally wrote herself into reality as the mysterious and never-aging Hachijo Ikuko, complete with a rich family and all.

She also exists above the Umineko/Higurashi meta, which explains why she can rewrite the meta plot in EP8 and why she can use the red in the real world.

She also likes to turn her favorite "main characters" into cat familiars. All that bullshit about Ikuko being the true form of Featherine and Bern being a fictional character based on Ikuko's cat and the Higurashi character... It's all a load of crap and doesn't make any sense. It's obvious that Bern is an actual meta creature that was turned into Featherine's cat miko after Higurashi. She isn't based on a fucking writer's cat or anything like that.

But it's obvious that he doesn't mind milking the shit out of Higurashi. Probably because the general public already sees it as some edgy story about killer lolis. It's too late to save Higurashi's reputation, so he may as well milk it dry and make some money.

I don't get why so many people think EP8 is very weak and shallow.

It's not the best episode, but I love how it expands the lore. Featherine, the city of books, the kakeraverse... And the way it mixes the fantasy narrative with the real world reveal of Eva's diary.

I agree that some of the fight scenes are just an excuse to showcase everyone's abilities and give them a last moment to shine. But outside the generic goat battles, every fight has a purpose and means something. Especially the fact that Featherine can modify reality to kill Lambda. It's not a meaningless scene, it shows that the entire meta plot is just one of Featherine's stories. And it's not the only scene that hints at it.

I also find it funny how some people assume that the red truth CAN contradict itself or lie just because they didn't understand something. Some examples are the apparently contradicting reds at the end of EP6 and the scene where Ikuko uses the red to convince everyone that Eva's diary is the real deal. These red statements don't contradict anything, but people miss the point and assume that you can lie in red if you believe it very strongly or some shit like that. Or that Ikuko's red statement is meant only for the readers and doesn't hint at anything else.

Higurashi is depressing when you think about it. The real villain gets away with it every time, Takano always dies except in the final world where she is treated as a criminal and all of Rika's friends meet terrible fates in every failed world.

It's only a happy ending for Rika, since she gets to live in a world where her friends are safe. But all their parallel world versions are genuinely fucked and can't be saved from the tragedy. Some of the shit they have to go through is nighmarish to say the least.

I guess Bernkastel's appearance in Umineko is proof that Rika managed to live as a normal person without worrying about all the shit that happened in other worlds. But even if she thinks of them as "dreams" that are not real from her perspective, deep down she knows that they were real. It's depressing as hell.

Also, in the only world where her friends are sinless and her parents are alive, Rika is forced to kill her mother and ruin her dad's life so she can return to the world she desires. In the end, Rika learned her lesson and stopped thinking of parallel worlds as being real, but Hanyu is kind of an asshole. She ruined a perfectly fine world in the process.

pointless observation. I noticed they changed the translation for a small but notable part at the end of Meakashi in the Steam release. In the old MG version, when Mion is on the ladder and Shion has her stungun pointed at her head, she calls Shion "onee-chan", which is the only scene in the entire VN that the phrase is used. In the Steam release, she just calls her "sis".
Kind of disappointing. Besides losing out on a small amount of plot info, it made one of the most depressing scenes in the series even sadder.

As for the quality of Umineko? It's out of this world. The setting is amazing, the writing is great, the plot draws you in and doesn't let you go. The characters are maybe what makes Umineko really stand out. Outside of some minor characters, most characters are very well-developed and their interactions are superb. It's a (murder) mystery fan's wet dream, but even if you're not into detectives etc you're still going to have a great time. I'm honestly jealous of you because I'd give anything to experience the Umineko VN for the first time again.

That said, Umineko is full of cringy dialogue, particularly during logic battles but I personally loved that. As for the general prose in Umineko, I thought it could tend to be a bit long-winding at times, but it's not terrible or anything.

Personally I think it would've cheapened the story if not done right. It didn't need sex scenes. I think the scene in EP1 with Eva and Hideyoshi in their room was a great way to go about it. It's heavily implied they were going to have sex, but it wasn't necessary to actually write a scene about it.

I'm biased because I watched the Higurashi anime when it came out and I had no idea what a VN even was back then. But it definitely got me interested and eventually I found out about Umineko and read that and then after that I read Higurashi. Obviously the anime can't compare with the VN. But I'm not disappointed at the fact that I saw the anime before I read the VN.
However, like I said in that post, I do advise newcomers to read the VN if they want to get into Higurashi. Then watch the anime. You can't expect an anime to adaptate a VN perfectly, but Higurashi was a pretty good watch. The Umineko anime wasn't.

The real problem is that it completely changes the mood and tone of the story, turning it into an edgy gorefest with crazy killer lolis and evil laughs. It's enjoyable as fuck, but not worth ruining your first experience with the story.

Arcs 7 and 8 were more faithful to the VN, but they still dropped the ball in some parts. The character of Frederica Bernkastel was completely ignored until the very last scene, and even that appearance was confusing. Don't even get me started on how they handled Matsuribayashi. The later parts are a clusterfuck and you never know what the hell is going on with all these characters running around unless you know the plot beforehand.

Other great characters like Ooishi and Irie had their backstories removed. Hell, basically all the main characters' backstories and motivations were dumbed down, especially Shion and the twin switch. All the answers to the mystery were poorly explained and a lot of people finished the anime thinking it was some crazy mindfuck.

The anime has a great OST and it's one of the first animes I genuinely loved. It's very nostalgic. But I DO regret watching it first. And the image most people have of Higurashi has nothing to do with what the VN is really like. It pains me to see something I love so much being misrepresented as an edgy mindfuck. To this day, people keep recommending the anime to others and it's sad that they will never know how touching the story really is and how good the mystery element is. The way it tricks the reader all the way through is nothing short of genius.

I wish the anime was a 100% awful piece of crap so people would actually read the VN. Most people just watch it, think it's ok and never look back. It overshadows and spoils a fantastic VN, one of the most engaging stories I've ever read.

Higurashi was unintentionally hilarious in both versions thanks to the "inside Oishi's car" background. There is this scene in one of the early episodes where Oishi's sprite appears inside the car while he is talking about something, making him look like a midget inside a gigantic car.

So a while a go I asked you guys about a friend "figuring out" the truth behind the murders after being a quarter through Ep. 3, and how realistic it was to do that without wiki reading.

Now, said friend has just perfectly "solved" half of Beatrice's backstory, specifically Kuwadorian Beatrice being her mum, Kinzo being her incest dad and grandad. Pretty much the only thing they didn't mention was everything to do with Natsuhi and the cliff etc. Friend is only on Ep. 3, and has only just read the flashback where Rosa meets KuwaBeato and she dies etc.

The kicker for me, is that they called Kuwadorian Beatrice, Chick Beato, which 'coincidentally' is an entirely separate character in Ep. 6, and to add to that, they instantly tried justifying that name like they knew the messed up.

His works always have some kind of pedo character, but it's always just a part of the character's personality. A harmless quirk. He could easily use it for drama or treat it as something bad, but he never does.

Irie's lolicon is used for comic relief most of the time. His platonic love for Satoko is one of the main reasons he is so determined to save her. And even though he has a pretty sad backstory, it has nothing to do with his pedoness. It's not the result of childhood trauma or any bullshit like that.

George seems to like grown girls more than lolis, but he still likes them. He never had the chance to mess around with lolis when he was a kid, because he was an antisocial nerd with no friends. Kanamori is an obvious psychopath that just happens to be a pedo. He doesn't give a shit about other people's feelings. You have probably met a lot of psychopaths like him. Most high school bullies are literally incapable of feeling bad for that socially awkward guy they are humiliating in front of everyone for a few laughs, even though they KNOW he will be traumatized for decades.

Anyway, Ryukishi is very likely to be a "lolicon". He also seems to know a lot about fetishes. Very few people would be able to come up with some of K1's mindblowing-tier speeches.

I know I should probably not complain so hard and even come to expect that things would be spoiled in a thread about these games, and I honestly do, so I haven't been perusing these threads quite so much since I started playing. It's just somewhat tempting since I'm actually playing it and it might be interesting or fun to be able to talk about it. Still, it'd probably be for the best if people just used the function properly as it should be.

Even if it's fairly early on, it's still spoilers that can to a degree ruin the fun of playing; just because it's not AERIS DIES LOL doesn't make it any less annoying. Also while I'm not entirely sure yet if it's true or not, while playing at some point, due to viewing that picture and to Battler's comment in my previous post I came to what seemed like a reasonable conclusion that those goat-men were actually the resurrections of the killed family members and servants. Of course, I'm not totally sure, and there's still quite a lot I obviously don't know as you might expect from being only in the first chapter. But even being able to guess a falsehood based on knowledge you shouldn't have can be kind of annoying.

My point being, that spoilers can sometimes beget more spoilers since being knowledgable tends to be a state that begets one more knowledge and understanding, resulting in more indirect spoilers.

Regardless, I'll probably take the advice and leave until I'm done.

I wish Umineko wasn't so needlessly long and that a bunch of the boring Ange shit got cut. So much of it felt really pointless yet I really love episode 7 and 8 but find it incredibly hard to actually recommend.

Yet I can recommend Higurashi because even if it has similar problems with padding, each individual episode is really good. Episode 4 of Umineko bored the hell out of me. There's also the whole cast getting better character development compared to Umineko's 9999999 side characters who don't have much reason to exist.

I really wish he had an editor.

Also, sometimes I feel like he's out of idea because Iwaihime feels like another rehash of Higurashi like that one awful anime was but it's apparently supposed to be pretty good?

Rose Gun Days didn't really interest me and I got bored of it after the first game. Some of the twists in it were mind blowingly stupid.

Higanbana was good but it felt like there's supposed to be more.

I disagree. Reread ep 4. When you first read it you're all ''why the fuck am I reading this, get back to the mysteries and shit'' but upon rereading, it's endlessly sad.
I think that people's short attention span is to blame. That it takes awhile for people to get to enjoy a character for us to actually care about who they are. And once you've finished Umineko and reread, the bullying scenes with Ange is among some of the best bullying in any medium. Getting Ange to confess that she's a worthless shit in front of the class is a masterclass.

The issue mostly with ep 4 is that the mystery is noneexistent.

I disagree. He's very diverse. Higurashi, Umineko, Higanbana, Rose Guns Days. They're all unique without obvious similarities. The only similarities I've noticed is maybe that Rena acts like Maria and that Tomitake is George.

Keep reading. RGD feels uninteresting until the first mini boss is defeated and the first real villain shows up. Season 3 of RGD is up there with Higurashi ep 6 and Umineko ep 5 in terms of greatness. That whole cultural keikaku warfare with the Soy Sauce was insane. I've never seen such a middle cultural middle finger in my life.

Umineko is a modern fantasy story, with literature being the setting for the fantasy. It might be your preference for medieval fantasy, but Ryukishi's work is still fantastical to a degree.

I've been thinking of ordering this for quite a while now, but I can't find an excuse to spend 200$ on what is basically a pretty box and artbook, I don't even own a PS3.
I always convince myself not to buy it because when I think about Umineko I never think of the art as the reason why I like it, I think of the characters and the story I'd say even the music is more important than the art (I know we're talking about PS3 art, I like it along with the original one). I like the box illustration a whole fucking lot though.
