So I've been wondering lately. How do I actually go about learning more vulgar/raunchy vocabulary? They don't have Anki decks specifically for that right?

Sometimes I'm casually reading some エロゲ when all of a sudden I'm hit with some obscure string of lewd text/slang that I can't interpret. As I'm occupied, it's difficult to really stop and look the phrase up too you know.

I think this answers my question but I'll ask for clarity. I just started reading and I decided to start with manga so I'm looking up words as I go. Sometimes what I'm missing, however, is some hiragana bit. Either a compound particle or just some hiragana word. Should I be researching in these instances too or should I just read through this confusion until my comprehension goes up?

Hey DJT I need some advice, I'm short on free time and I don't want to waste my time on inefficient learning methods.
I hope you can help me answer these questions.

1.What's the best way to get sufficient kanji knowledge?

While grinding core in the past, I noticed that after seeing lots of vocab that uses a certain kanji, you kinda get a feel for that kanji.
When I saw a new word containing said kanji, I often knew what it meant and sometimes even knew which reading to use as well.
This made it hell a lot easier to pick up new vocabulary.

I tried doing isolated kanji studying via Kodanshas Kanji Learners Course, but considering the time spent, the result was rather underwhelming. (only did 1/4 of the book though)

Does reading and mining a lot of words help? Can I passively learn more kanji by encountering many words in the wild and is that a efficient way?
I mean it does sound efficient indeed since reading improves vocab, grammar and perhaps kanji knowledge all at once, but couldn't a solid foundation prior to consuming a lot help you even more?

KKLC didn't work for me, are there other methods or approaches to get a feel for kanji?

2.Reading

When reading via texthooker or furigana, I noticed that I often hover over words that I should've recognized or read the furigana before even trying to read a word by itself, I think I harm myself by reading like that since every word I pick up and keep in my memory while reading, is a word less I have to grind in anki.
I just feel like I don't learn enough while reading, I read a chapter that has a few new words in it and the day after it's gone.

Yeah I could mine all of them, but anki already cuts massively into my reading time as it is.

What do DJT?

>> No.17221258

>>17221249
>What's the best way to get sufficient kanji knowledge?
There's no such thing as sufficient kanji knowledge. Not even all the kanji knowledge in the world will let you read. You need to know words and grammar. Kanji is tangential to that.

>Does reading and mining a lot of words help? Can I passively learn more kanji by encountering many words in the wild and is that a efficient way?
This isn't just the easiest way to do it, it's also the safest, and it's what natives do too. They know words and assign kanji to them.

>I just feel like I don't learn enough while reading, I read a chapter that has a few new words in it and the day after it's gone.
You're learning even if you don't feel like you are. You're probably still rewiring your brain to understand Japanese grammar at a subconscious level, and relearning common words you memorized with weird definitions, and your brain is too busy doing that to remember more than a few new words. Basically until you're intermediate reading's just gonna feel like this.

The Reddit version of the guide. It's really good. Especially the paid version.

DJT emphasizes reading above all. Tae Kim is meant to get your feet wet and get you into reading as soon as possible.
Genki is a much more gentle, but time consuming entrance into Japanese. Its pretty common to see reddit users (at least posted in these threads) where they studied for years but still at a N3 or even N4 level.

I guess it really depends on how good you are with languages. If you are good, use Tae Kim and blast your way through to get to reading ASAP. If you aren't, going through Genki would be a lot less painful.

Then again it seems like Reddit's guide recommends Tae Kim before it mentions Genki.

I currently live in Japan, and although I studied Japanese for quite some time before coming, I've never gotten a clear understanding of what words to use when talking about MY husband. I know the words for husband, 主人, 旦那, etc. Originally, I was taught to use 主人 but when my coworkers refer to their spouses, I never hear this term. When people talk to me and refer to my husband, they say OPの旦那さん, which I understand. But because no one except myself would refer to my husband as "my husband" I am still not clear on what I should use when talking about him, and if I should use -さん at the end. Thanks!

Oh, and I should also say I was planning on reading Tae Kim after Genki anyway, to see a different take on things as apparently he teaches a more casual style than Genki.

I want to be able to write my name in Katakana, which has a long consonant sound at the end. I know of the dash in katakana but I wasn't sure if it was exclusive for vowels.
Can I just repeat the consonant?

So I've been doing a little of the polite speech, and I know that some words take 'o' to become polite, some 'go' and some use neither. What I would like to know is if there is a rule or pattern, or if there is some resource I can use to find out which is right. I tried Google but came away with not very much.
