Why indeed. She could be a main character without drowning out everyone else's presence, to the point where all of the mangas' plot is about Reimu, Marisa, the secondary main characters (Akyuu, Kosuzu and Mamizou in FS, Kasen and sometimes Sanae in WaHH), and maybe one other character if it's one of the better chapters. Even fucking Clownpiece had to settle under the Hakurei Shrine, because god forbid otherwise. Imagine how much more interesting would the mangas be if the viewpoint switched to an entirely different character for a chapter or two every so often.

It's even worse with the universal praise she gets, even from Kasen when Reimu isn't listening. No wonder she's a controversial character when the canon makes you sick of her.
Same thing with Marisa, to be honest. Although her presence is somewhat easier to swallow, with how positive of a person she is.

I think the reason its obnoxious is that in spite of Reimu's amount of screentime, we know less about her than we do the many of the secondary characters, so it feels like she's just stalling development. With Marisa you know how she became a magician, how she was raised, her motivations, as well as what her general perspective is like, but Reimu is a total blank.

Her greed, jerkassery and sloth make her divisive. Canon being all about her only makes it that much harder to remain neutral towards her and/or write her off as necessary evil if you can't stomach those traits. That, and the desire for ZUN to actually explore the characters he's been creating en masse in supplementary material.
