8, /jp/. There are eight Wanko To Asobou threads on /jp/ right now. You know what we don't have? A Getting Drunk Off Our Asses thread. So let's have one.

ITT: Japanese drinks.

>> No.1652378

I like my whiskey like I like my women, aged 12 years.

Ahem...you guys go ahead, i'll help out.

This was funny 4 years ago. Not so much anymore.

>> No.1652400

I've never really been impressed with any Japanese liquor I've tried. It seems the Europeans beat them in quality and Americans beat them in trashy fun.

>> No.1652439

I don't see how anyone can stand the taste of whiskey...or most liquor/alcohol for that matter.

>> No.1652454

The best of Japanese alcohol is their whiskey, and even that isn't really that impressive. Depending on what you are are looking for the best stuff either comes from Europe or USA

>> No.1652460

I like unfiltered sake.

Shame it's expensive to buy anything that's good.

>> No.1652468

I'm not sure what to drink tonight. Was thinking of just going for some Jim Beam on the rocks, but I might do a rum and coke (or just rum)... Not in the mood for vodka, and I'm out of Glenlivet. Bourbon it is. Thanks for helping me make up my mind, OP.

>> No.1652469

>>1652439
Any time i've had whiskey i've had to put some water in it, which is actually pretty common apparently.

>> No.1652485

The only Japanese drink i like is Sapporo, though i haven't tried any of their whiskeys but I've already grown attached to Chivas Regal so i really don't have much of a desire to try them...

>> No.1652479

>>1652469
it opens it up. you can also use a special shaped glass to improve the taste as well.

How does it (Sapporo) taste?

>> No.1652493

>>1652468
Not a Jameson man?

Also, Glenlivet. I envy you for being able to afford it. Shame you're out.

I think I'm going to see what's left in my cabinet.

>> No.1652496

>>1652479
I've heard you're only supposed to add a tiny bit though. I think I end up adding too much just so I can actually drink it.

Also Cutty Sark.

>> No.1652498

>>1652493
Jameson is better stuff anyways.

>> No.1652500

Gekkeikan plum sake. Cheap and reasonably delicious. Regular sake is good, too, but I like sweet things and plum sake is the last Japaniizu sake I've had. (Though, paradoxically, I'm more a beer man than anything. Tonight I'm finishing off my Leffe because I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped.)

>> No.1652511

>Cutty Sark

Stop posting on 4chan, dad.

>> No.1652519

I like Glenlivet and Jameson. I find Jameson to be smoother overall, as smooth as whiskey can be, but Glenlivet has its finer points, too.

Although, I just drink it on the rocks, so I probably have no taste buds left, anyway.

>Gekkeikan plum sake

How sweet is it? I really enjoy sweet things, so I'm considering giving this a try...

Jameson and Bushmill put out the best of the irish whiskeys. scotches are all purely up to taste.

>> No.1652546

Sometimes I feel like Glenlivet, sometimes I feel like Jameson.

If you don't drink something different once in a while, you can't appreciate your favorite.

Too bad I'm too fucking poor to drink Scotch whiskey anytime I want to.

>> No.1652547

>>1652460
I really like unfiltered too.

When it comes to beer, I drink both Kirn, Sapporo and Asahi. Can't taste a big difference between the three, except for with Asahi black... damn that one had a strong taste. Took a while to finish it.

>> No.1652559

>>1652491
Pretty good, its got a nice light flavor ( not too bitter, no real aftertaste). A couple more experienced beer drinkers i know have said its pretty bland however.

>> No.1652568

>>1652547
>I really like unfiltered too.

High-fucking-five bro.

I can't drink Japanese beers, though. All beer of that type tastes like pisswater.

I drink Belgian or German beers.

>> No.1652575

>>1652526
It's delicious, but not overpoweringly sweet, like ... well, most sweet drinks.

Not quite as sweet as a good riesling, say.

>> No.1652630

As for Jameson, I prefer just my Glenlivet. If I'm going with anything less than Glenlivet, it's gonna just be a cheap, smooth bourbon, so Jim Beam does the trick. Never was much for the Irish whiskeys. Kentucky whiskey or Scotch whiskey, that's my thing. Too bad I don't have any vermouth or I'd toss together a Manhattan. Oh well, I usually like my Manhattans more like a double shot than a "true" Manhattan anyway.

>> No.1652637

>>1652630
It's all a matter of taste. I'm just happy to know that people can appreciate a fine whiskey.

>> No.1652646

But Cutty Sark is good, hm?

>> No.1652651

Haven't tried it so I won't comment. My impression as a waiter is that it's not very popular and rather on the cheap side.

>> No.1652658

>>1652651
You might be right. I've no taste for hard liquor like that and the only whiskey I had before was more common things (J. Walker, etc) but a friend and I bought a bottle of Cutty Sark after noting that it was mentioned by name in like 6 novels we read. I thought it was okay, but it might be shit.

What about 'Famous Grouse?'

That would be a No. That shit is poison.
Bourbon or nothing.

>> No.1652672

Hmm, if I like but am not amazed by a regular whisky brand, should I try the 'premium' brand from that distillery, or something else altogether? Like Jhonnie Walker Black, Gentleman Jack's, etc...

>> No.1652678

>>1652658
If you want the waiter's opinion on whiskeys, the most popular ones are Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and Maker's Mark. Jack takes some getting used to, even for people that like whiskey normally. Scotches vary widely. You'll get orders for just about anything - J&B, Johnnie Walker, Chivas, Glenlivet, Dewar's, etc etc etc.

If you really want to experiment, what I'd recommend is going to bevmo.com and looking through their stock. They have critic ratings and descriptions of everything they sell. Find Cutty Sark, look at what flavors it has, identify what you like about it, and find something else that offers similar traits. You may well find a whiskey that's not "popular" but if you love it, then all the more power to you.

As for your comment about splashing water in whiskey - much more common with scotches. In fact, the "proper" way to drink a scotch is in a larger glass, like a snifter, and warmed. This enhances all the flavors, but it brings out the kick that people hate in hard liquor too. So, what you do is splash just a little water in it - literally just an on-off of the tap for a single shot - and that mellows the bite, while keeping all the flavor. Whiskeys most people will drink neat or on the rocks (depending on if they like it chilled or not), but rarely with a splash of water.

>>1652672
Generally speaking, if the "plain" version didn't do it for you, aging it won't help. The exception to this is if you liked the flavor, but it wasn't smooth enough, as aging reduces the bite. Best bet is just to find another whiskey with a different palate.
