You need to verify your account first, it'll cost some money. 2D version is pretty much dead though, no people playing, and getting custom clients to run is a pain in the ass, too. Playing with a default one isn't really an option in this case.
They've been trying to move away from it as far as they can, and at some point they will shut it down altogether, leaving you with soulless 3D. Which is sad, really, but even this new version is starting to grow on me. It will never replace the glorious 2D though, may it rest in peace.

To get to the /jp/ village, you can use the vortex at (-26, 70) which sends you north (not sure about destination coordinates). It'll still take quite a while to travel from there, but it's a lot easier than manually traveling that way.

Looking at the chat log, post-vortex travel time is about an hour. I met up with two people from /jp/; were were traveling towards each other, and after going through the vortex it took 30 minutes before we reached each other.
